Application led July 27, 1923.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, Mmosnav STHP., a citizen of the Republic of Czechoslovakia, residing at Prague, Czechoslovakia. have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in Stoves, of which the following is a specification.
My invention `relates to a slow combustion stove in which the admission of the combustion air, the admission of additional air, as well as the escape of the smoke can be regulated by means of a single device so as to obtain the desired degree of heating. The invention also relates to a regulating device comprising a drum subdivided into three chambers and provided with slots and a spindle provided with dampers and passing through the centre 0f the said drum.
More particularly, the regulatingdevice is a slotted drum divided into three cylindrical chambers, a damper being provided in each chamber. The supply of air is controlled by the damper in the central chamber and the discharge of gases by the dampers in the side chambers. Both the last-mentioned dampers are set at the same angle relatively to the damper in the central chamber and all the dampers are carried on a common spindle rotatably journalled in the drum. A space at the back of a gasifying chamber disposed above the furnace and adjacent to the filling opening is likewise divided into three cham,- bers. The central one of these chambers is in direct communication with the furnace and connected to thel air supply through the central chamber of the said drum, while the side chambers of the drum which are closed directly to the furnace may be placed in communication either with the furnace or with the flues leading to the chimney through the regulating drum.
A construction of the sto-ve according to my invention is diagrammatically shown, by way of example, in the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. l is a vertical section of the stove through the central chamber of the regulating drum; Figs. 2 to 4e are fragmental similar sections with the regulating dampers in different positions; Fig. 5 is a horizontal section on line BWB in Fig. l; Fig. 6 is a horizontal section on line A-A in Fig. l; Fig. 7 is a vertical section on line CC of Fig. 6; Fig. 8 is a front elevation of the handle for operating the regulating dampers; Fig. 9 isa horizontal section on line D-D in Fig. 7 Fig. 10 is a plan of part STOVE.
serial No. 654,107.
of the stove; Fig. ll is a vertical section on line E-E in Fig. l2 which is a horizontal section on line F-F in ll; Figs. lf2 and lal to 4ta are vertical longitudinal sections of the stove through the side chambers of the regulating device; Figs. lll and l5 are views of the regulating device from two opposite sides; Figs. 16 and 1T show a perspective view of the regulating drum seen from two different sides; and Fig. 18 is a perspective View of the spindle with its dampers provided in the regulating drum.
The combustion chamber' and a gasifying chamber g both having perforated walls, are disposed above the grate R and are separated from each other by a narrow space S. ritrches le provided between the casing of the stove and the lower portion of the gasifying chamber g divide lthe air entering the gasifying chamber from the front.
The gasifying chamber g is in direct communication with the flue 30, the upper portion of the wall of which is perforated. Duets 26 are provided between the outer face of the said flue and the casing of the stove, the said ducts opening into the ante-chamber of the gasifying chamber g. The space between lthe back portion of the gasifying chamber g and the casing of the stove is divide-d into three chambers by angularI intermediate partitions 31 (Fig. 1l). The central chamber 4 is in direct communication with the Yfurnace f through a 'passage 3 (Figs. l and ll). The side chamber 7 arc closed against the furnace f by the said intermediate partitions at the level of the upper edge of the said furnace.
The casing of the stove is divided into chambers and is arranged as follows:
Lower conduits 6 are disposed symmetrically to the centre (Figs. 11 and l2) and are closed against the ash-pit 32 by partitio-ns 33'. Lateral vertical conduits 6b which extend partially over the front of the lcasing of the stove passing in front of the gasifying chamber g open into the said conduits 6"L into which likewise open conduits G provided on the back of the casing of the stove and leadingV to a horizontal cylindrical casing 34 in communication with an uptake 10 connected to the chimney. The furnace gases thus flow through the said conduits (i, 6a and 6b.
Rear ducts 2O and front ducts l5 are provided at the corners of the stove and are in communication with the surrounding air through apertures cut in the casingv of the stove and extending almost to the floor of the latter, so that the said surrounding air has access to the interior of the casing of the stove. rllhese ducts 2() and 15 open into a chamber 23 surrounding the gasedischarging ducts 26 of the lilling opening. rllhe 'top ol:I the chamber A3 is provided With tubes 2li establishing communication between the chamber 23 and a chamber 25 immediately above the latter. The chamber 25 is filled with Water and is either in direct communication With the surrounding air through openings in the casing or is provided with a discharge conduit 22.
Atmospheric air has also access to the above-mentioned ducts 29 through a chamber 18 provided on the rear and central lower portion of the casing of the stove (Fig. 1). This chamber 18 is in communication With atmospheric air through a conduit 1i' and has on both sides conduits 19 leading to the ducts 20. A. passage opens into the cover of the chamber 18 and also leads to a central slot in the cylindrical casing 34 which contains a drum fr (Figs. 16 and 17) closed at each end at 3G and having intermediate partitions 37 whereby the drum is divided into a central chamber 38 and tvvo side chambers 39 respectively. The drum r is axially traversed by a rotatably journalled spindle t() carrying a damper o in the chamber 38 and a damper 7e in each of the chambers 39, the dampers 7e being arranged to both form the same angle with the central damper o. The spindle 10 projects externally from the casing 34 and may be rotated by means of a handle l1 for the purpose of setting the dampers in various positions.
The division of the drum r into the chambers 38 and 39 corresponds to the arrangement of the chambers 4 and i' at the back of the gasifying chamber g. The Wall oi the drum r has suitable slots adapted to cooperate with apertures in the casing 34; in which the drum is mounted.
Referring to Fig. Ll, the portion of the Wall of the drum r facing the interior of the stove has a slot 2 ccupying the Width of the central chamber 38 of the drum r and lying below a horizontal plane passing through the axis of the drum, Each of the side chambers 39 of the drum has a similar slot 5. Further slots 8 are provided on the Wall of the chambers 39 above the said central plane and above the slots 5, so that free passage is afforded through the slots 5, the chambers 39 and the slots 8 when the dampers lc are in the correct position.
Referring to Figs. 15, 16 and 17. the rear Wall of the regulating drum 7^- has slots 1a, 1b, 1c 'occupying the Width of the central chamber 38 and lying below the above-mentioned central plane. Each of the chambers 39 has similar slots 9 and 11, the slots 11 extending somewhat above the said eentral plane. Finally, a further slot 1Q, orenpying the width oi" the chamber 38, is po itioned above the slots 1, 1b and l and ahnte the said central plane oii` the drum fr.
rilhe essential point is that the combustion air should pass directly only into the loner portion of the furnace chamber f, and the spreading of the air tfiiwards the upper para of the store gasii'ying chamber g be brouglu about by the draft of the chimney.
Accordingly each ot the chan'ihers nl the drum fr and all these chambers are simnlta neonsly regulated as regards their relation to the store chambers and ilues by means nl' the dampers o which can be rotated with the spindle lO in any direction.
The heating` and ventilation oi the room are regulated in the following manner:
lilith the regulation effected in accordance with F 1 and 1?. the incoming air passes through the slots 1nu and 1b into the central chamber 38 of the regulatng drum r below the damper e' whence the air passes onlyv through the slot Q owing to the position oi the damper o, and reaches the lower portion of the furnace chamber 7.
The air passes also through the passage I) into the chamber l in which it is heated and thence into the gasiitying chamber (f7 where it becomes mixed with the combustion gases and causes them to burn completely. The, chimney draft acts on the lfurnace and gasifying chamber of the stove through the uptake 10. the slots 9 in the chambers 39 ot the regulating drinn fr, the drinn itself and its slots 8. lhen necessaryn and aceoixliiuxto the position ot the dampers Z1. the air can also be caused to pass from the ante-chainber of the furnace chamber f. through the slots 5. 11. side chambers 39 ot the regulating drum r. the conduits C, the lower conduits GfL adjoining the latter. then through the lateral vertical conduits tl" into the anti chamber et the gasifying chaml'ier lo the gasifying chamber after being heated in the inner lines. Accordingly. the combustion air spreads over the `rhole upper part of the gasifying chambers The combustion gases Which rise in the iurnace chamber and in the gasitying chamber, in as far as theyT are not completely burnt by the supply of heated combustion air, collect with the smoke and other material in the side chambers 7 and pass through the slots 8, the regulating drum r and its slots 9. into the uptake 10. The gases generated in the {illing chamber above the gasiiying chamber. pass through the openings of the filling duct into the conduits 26 arranged round the .filling` duct and opening into the anteclia1nber of the gasifying chamber' o (Figs. 1 and 1"l It after this setting of elements which is done to start or light the stove. the fire is to burn constantly at a high rate, the regulating Laisser dampers 7c, o are turned into the position shown in Figs. 2, 2 and i5. rThe path 'for the admission oi air and the action or' the said air remains the saine. @n the contrary, the furnace chamber is connected directly through the slots 5 anc 8 ot' the regulating drum with the chambers 7 in which gases collected in the previous position ot the said drum, so that the heated cornbustion air escaping troni the chamber i", together with the air also heated which escapes in the same direction from the chamber d, cause a complete combustion oit the combustion gases in the whole or the gasi'tying chamber y. The discharge ot the combustion into the chin'iney takes place however exclusively through the ilues 6b, G, 6 (Fig. lf3) as well as through the side chambers 239 oi' the drum r, provided with the slots ll and 9, whereby a considerable heating of the door is produced.
The action or the ifurnace, with the dan'ipers 7c, c in the position shown in l and 3", is reduced while the quantity of the air supplied is halved. The excess oit air passes directly into the chimney through the slot l", the regulating drum r and slot l2 so that the whole room is ventilated. rlfhe discharge 'or the combustion gases remains the same.
lWith the damper-s 7c, 'u in the position shown in lFigs. 4 and 4L, the admission of air is completely shut ori. The ventilation of the room is considerably increased by the air current through the slots l", l, 12. rEhe discharge oit the combustion gases from the stove, reduced to a minimum by the ventilating current ot air, as well as the discharge o't the secondary air from the ante-chamber of the furnace f and chamber 4i, into the uptalre 10 which is throttled takes place through the fines 6b, 6, G and slots 11 and 9.
.ln that way, by turning the spindle i0 carrying the dainpers 7c, c in one or the other direction, it is always possible to ensure the desired degree of heating.
ln order to bring about circulation, puriiication and moistening ot the air of the room, the air admitted passes through the conduits lC and 17, chamber i8, and ducts i ,i the room or may be conveyed elsewhere.
l claim as my invention:
l. :in a slow combustion stove, the combination with the turnaceand gasifying chamber and a casing enclosing the same, et a regulating drum having slotted walls and being divided into three chambers, the space between the said gasifying chamber and the rear oit the said casing being likewise divided into three chambers, corresponding to the chambers in the said regulating drum, and means in the said. regulating drum for connecting the central chamber of lthe said space directly to the said furnace chamber, and the other chambers in the said space either directly or indirectly to the said gasifying chamber tor supplying air to the said chambers.
2. rlhe combination as specilied in claim 1, in which the said regulating drum coinprises a cylindrical casing provided with slots, arotatable spindle passing through the center ot the said casing and being journalled therein, and dampers carried by the said spindle, one damper in each chamber, the dampers in the two outer chambers of the said casing being offset at the saine angle rela-tive to the damper in the central chamber of the said casing.
ln testimony whereof I have signed my naine to this specication 1n the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
