Description

Patented Dec. 9, 1924.,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GUSTAVE O. CARLSON, OF WETHERSFIELD, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR T MAYHEW STEEL PRODUCTS, INC., OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A COREORATION OF DELAWARE.
HAND TOOL.
Application filed January 14, 1921.
To all fio/mm 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, G'UsTAvn O. CAnLsoN, a citizen of the United Statics, and a resident ot lVetherslield, in the county oi" Hartford, State ot Connecticut, have invented certain new and uset'ul Improvements in a Hand .lool, of which the following is a specil'ication.
This invention relates particularly to hand-tools of the type comprising a pair of pivotally connected members each with a handle at one end and an active or 'fabricating portion at the other end. The invention is here illustrated as embodied in pliers, but it is to be understood that the present eisclosure is illustrative only and is not to be taken as restrictive of my invention.
The object of the present invention is to provide a hand-tool of this sort having features of novelty and advantage and which is characterized particularly by its simplicity of construction, economy in manufacture, and its great strength and durability.
In the accompanying drawing Fig. 1 is an elevational view ot my improved pliers.
F ig. 2 is an edge view, vith a portion broken away, of that member having the integral pivot stud, and
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on .line of Fig. 1.
A pair ci pliers constructed in accordance with the present invention consists olf two members A, li. each [Vneiterably 'lornied in one piece by forging. Each part has a. handle portieri and an active or jaw portion 11 at its opposite ends. One ot the members, in the present instance part A, has between its jaw and handle portions an in` tegral stud 13 which is received by a similarly positioned bearing in the other member P), this bearing in the present instance being in the ilform of an aperture .14. This aperture 14 is preferably countersnnk as at Serial N'o. 437,217.
15 and the outer end of the stud .l-3 is bent or headed over into the countersink.
Preferably the stud. 13 is recessed :it its end so that during the heading or riveting operating expansion of the body portion of the stud into binding engagement with the wall of the aperture 14 is eliminated. rIhe annular lip 16, provided by recessing the stud, is of some thickness, as shown in Fig. 3, so that after this lip is headed over, it is of sntlicient strength to securely hold the parts together against the relatively great strains to which tools ot this sort arc-subjected.
It will be seen that a tool constructed in accordance with the present invention consists of two parts each of which is of very simple construction. This makes it possible to forge each of these parts and connect them together Without resorting to machining operatings Which materially increase the cost of tools of this sort. Thus is provided a tool which is very strong, durable and of pleasing appearance and which i'nay be manufactured and placed on the market at a very reasonable price.
I claim as my invention A pair of pliers comprising two forged members each having a handle portion and a jaw portion, one ot said members having a cylindrical aperture between its handle and jaw portions, said aperture being bevelled or counterbored at one end to provide a recess ol substantial area and the other o'l said members having between its handle and jaw portions an integral stud of greater height than the length of the aperture in said other member, said stud having a recess in its outer end to provide an annular lip, said lip being bent over into the countersink of said aperture and being of substantial thickness, whereby it has sutlicicnt strength to withstand strains.
