To all whom t may concern. Be it known that I, AITHUR BEAUcHn- MIN, a citizen of the United States, and
resident of Burlington, county of Chitten den, and State of Vermont, have invented an Improvement in Picker-Stick Checks, of which the following description, connecrtion with the accompanying drawing, is a specification, likecliaracters on the draw- 10 ing representing like parts.
This invention relates to a picker stick check or. mechanism forcheclng or retarding the picker stick by means of which the shuttle is picked back and forth across the lay inl a loom. f
The invention has forits object to p rovide a mechanism of this-'ty e comprisinv an endless elongated flat sti resilient and preferably metal loop. l
The invention has for its further object to provide such a loop to ether with means for producing suicient' friction on the sides of the loop to ive the requisite retardation to the loop yw en struck by the picker stick.
The invention has lfor its further object to provide a picker i check mechanism 1n which the requisite retarding friction is secured by means acting to press in opposite directions against'the opposite sidesof an endless elongated flat vstiff resilient and preferably metal loop having a longitudinal sliding movement when struck by the picker stick.
The object of the invention hasfur'therto provide a simple and ecient picker stick check mechanism'readily adjustable to effeet the requisite retardation of the picker stick.
These and other objects and features of the invention will appear more fully fr om the accompanying description and drawing and will be particularly pointed out in the claims.
As the invention relates solely to the mechanism for checking the movement of the picker stick and as the general construction and operation of a loom including the picking mechanism is well known and familiar to those skilled in the -art it is only necessary' here to illustrate and describe that' portion of the loom directly concerned with the resent invention. propelling the shuttle from the box and picking it across the lay. The movement of the picker stick toward the center of the lay must be retarded or, checked after it has propelled the shuttleout of the box. When the shuttle returns the picker stick is swung back and, as the shuttle yenters the box, the movement of tlie shuttle is retarded or checked by the binder 4 and alsoby the tip of the shuttle striking the picker stick, or preferably a buffer 7 secured to the picker stick. Thus the picker stick is returned with great force to the position shown in the loom and to the picker stick by the Aincomin shuttle is very great and very sudden an is constantly occurring during the operation of the loom often several times a second.

'The side of the loop opposite the side 8 is frmed by the overlapping ends 11 and 12 of the metal strip which are permanently secured together in any lsuitable manner as for examp e by the rivets 13. This loop is supported and guided at its opposite sides and the requisite retardation of the longitudinal movement of the loop is secured by pressing` in opposite directions against the two longitudinal sides to give the requisite friction. p
ln the construction illustrated the sup porting and guiding means comprise two brackets secured to and depending from the lay. The rear bracket 15 is preferably of angular shape iitting against the back and bottom of the lay and is secured thereto by a bolt 16. This bracket terminates at vits lower end in a depending flat arm 17. @ne side, as 8, of the loop is mounted in aflongitudinal recess in a long flat metal plate 18. A. plate 19 of suitable friction material such as leather is placed at the rear/of the plate 18 and over this a second metal plate 20. The three plates 18, 19 and 2O are secured together as by the screws 21. The three plates with the interposed loop are adjustably andrigidly mounted on the depending arm 17 of the rear bracket as by means' of a bolt 22 passed through a longitudinal slot 23 in the plates and a hole in the arm 17. This bolt is provided with suitable washers 24 and. is locked in place by a nut 25.
The front bracket 26 1s preferably oi angular shape tting against the front and bottom of the lay and is secured thereto by a bolt 27. ln order to secure the requisite opposing transverse pressure of the loop means are provided for adjusting a portion of one of the brackets toward and from the other and for that purpose the front bracket is made in two parts adjustable transversely of the lay. In a loom-having a lay, a plcker stick check comprising a pair of oppositely disposed brackets secured to and de ndn 1 from the lay, an endless elongated at sti resilient loop supported at its sides in saidl bracket and mounted to slide longitudinally 20 therebetween, and means for ad]usting one of said brackets toward and from the other p d thereby to produce suiicient friction on the sides of the lloop tardation to the picker stick.
