Be it known that I, HERMAN voN Briann- FELD, a citizen of the United States, residing at lVoodhaven, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Match Safes, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to smokers stands and its object is to provide a combination match delivery and igniting mechanism.

Another object of the invention is to provide a cigar clipper actuated by the match delivering and igniting apparatus when set in motion.

Still another object of the invention is to provide a device having a friction surface against which the heads of the matches are struck this surface being adjustable to engage the heads of matches o-f varying lengths.

These and other analogous objects are attained by the novel design, construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and sho-wn in the accompanying drawings, forming part of this disclosure, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the comb-ination smokers stand and match delivering apparatus,

Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view through the device illustrating in detail the match delivering apparatus.

Figure 3 is an enlarged sectional view 25 through a portion of the device taken at a right angle to Figure 2.

Figure 4 is a fragmentary detail plan view of the match holding device.

Figure 5 is a perspective view of the lower end of the delivery hopper.

Figure 6 is a perspective view of the match straightening element.

Figure 7 is a vertical sectional view taken substantially on line 7 7 of Figure 3.

In the drawings, the numeral 10 designates the base of this improved smokers stand, provided with a casing 11 which encloses the match reservoir and the delivery apparatus. Removably attachedl to the base, near the front wall of the casing, is a cigarette humidor 12 and an ash receiver 13. A clip 14 extends upwardly from the cover 15 of the humidor 12 and may be used to hold cigars or cigarettes when they are not in use.

the cover of the casing, near' one side edge, and a match reservoir 17 is inserted through the top of the casing 11, near the opposite side edge. As shown in Figure 1, the reservoir 17 is provided with a hinged cover 18 held in closed position by means of a turn button 19. The side walls of the reservoir 17 are provided with outwardly extending flanges 20, which serve to limit the downward movement of the reservoir through the top wall of the casing.

As shown in Figure 3, the bottom wall 21 of the match reservoir isinclined to .form a hopper and a spring pressed follower 22 is arranged within the reservoir to force the matches conta-ined therein downward and against the wall 21. Hingedly connected as at 23, to brackets 24 on the underside of the wall 21, is a-plate 25, its forward end carrying an upwardly extending match straightening tongue 26, to which are secured resilient guide fingers 27, serving to force an individual match into the delivering apparatus as will be more fully hereinafter described. y

Extending beyond one end of the free edge of the plate 25 is an actuating arm 28, provided with parallel fingers 29, between which is disposed an actuating pin 30, carried by a lever 31, pivoted at 31 to the inner side of the wall 32 of the casing 11 (see Figure7 Pivo-tally mounted at the mouth of the hopper, is a discharge and cut-off plate 33, the inner edge 34 of which is upturned so that when the plate is in elevated position1 as shown in Figure 3, ya trough will be formed for the reception of a single match, and when the plate is lowered, the match will be discharged and the upturned edge 34: will act to close the mouth of the hopper, thus preventing more than a. single mat-ch being discharged into the delivery mechanism. The movement of the plate 33 is contro-lled by means of a pin 35 engaged by the upper edge of a cam 36 carried by the lever 31.

Secured to the inner face of the wall 32 is a stop 37, adapted to limit the downward movement of the plate 33 so that the match carried by said plate will be discharged into the slot 33 in the wall 32, and will fall into the grooved upper edge of the delivery arm 39 of the delivery mechanism.

rllhis delivery arm 39 is best illustrated in Figure 2, and as shown, is pivotally mounted at 40 between the walls 32 and 42 of the casing ll., which are spaced at a distance approximately the thickness ot a match, so that as the match is delivered through the slot 3S, it will fall directly into the groove in the arm cushion elements 4l are secured in the casing to engage the front and bottom edges ot the arm 39, as best seen in Figure 2. Fivotally connected as at 43, is a` plunger 44, which projects upwardly through the top wall ot the casing l1, and is provided with a knob or handle 45, by means ot which the same is actuated. A retractile coil spring 46 is attached to the delivery arm 39, and to the wall 32, acting to return the delivery arm to its lowermost position.

Pi'vctally mount-ed as at 47, between the walls 32 and 42, is an arcuate, abrasive member 48, designed to engage the head of a match during its upward movement, when in the delivery arm, to cause the match to ignite. As shown in Figure 2, this member 4S is yieldably held in the path ot the head ot the match by means of a spring 49, and is adjusted by the screws 50, so that the abrasive member may be made to engage the heads of matches ot varying lengths.

ln order that the` match upon ignition may be held in position for removal after the. delivery arm has returned to lowered position, the top plate 5l has a slot 52, and is provided with an otlset notch 53 into which the match is forced by means ot a .spring 54 mounted between the walls 82 and 42, as illustrated in the drawings, the same extending through a sh t 55 in the plate 32.

A curved slot 56 is formed through the plate 32 through which extends a pin 57 rigidly carried at the lower end of the plunger bar 44, this pin operating in a recess 58 formed in the lever 3l so as to rotate the same upon depression ot the knob 45, the lever turning on the pivot 3l to make contact with the pi'n 35, this arrangement being shown in Figure 7.

ln operation, the matches are placed in the reservoir 1.7, beneath the follower 22, and consequently will tall to the bottom 21 of the hopper. Upon pressing downwardly upon the knob 45, the delivery arm 39 will swing on its pivot 40 and simultaneously the lever 3l will bey swung` on its pivot, so that the pi'n 30 will engage the uppermost linger 29, causing the plate 25 to move upwardly, and the tongue 26 to likewise move upwardly through the slot 55 formed near the discharge opening of the hopper, thereby straightening the matches in immediate contact with the. tongue and at the same time causing the lowermost match to` move outwardly through the mouth ot the hopper and into the trough formed at the upturned edge of the plate 33.

lhis plate, by reason of contact of the pin 35 with the upper edge 36 of the cam lever 3l, has been swung into the position shown in Figure 3, so as to prevent further outward movement ot the match, and when the delivery arm again returns to its lowermost position, it will be seen that the tree edge ot the plate 33 falls downwardly and onto the stop 87, so that the match will be delivered trom the plate and through the slot 38 into the trough in the upper edge ot the delivery arm.

`Obviously when in this position and when vthe delivery arm is again moved by means of the plunger 44, the head of the match will be straight across the abrasive member 48, and thus become ignited so that when the limited travel is reached the match will be in tull flame and may be withdrawn trom its position between the spring 54 and the wall of the notch 53.

While certain preferred embodiments ot this device have been shown and described, it will be understood that changes in the form, arrangements, proportions, sizes and details thereof, may be made without de par ing troni the scope ot the invention as defined in the appended claims'.

Having thus described my invention, what l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

ln a device ot the class described, a delivery hopper, a delivery arm associated therewith, a match straightening and positi'oning means associated with the hopper to properly position the match for the reception of the delivery arm, means associated with the arm and hopper tor trictionally engaging the head of the match during its delivery movement to cause the same to ignite upon delivery and means Yfor holdino` the match in vertical position, said means preventing the recedence ot the match.
