To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LABRON 13. Ross, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Methods and Apparatus for Forming Paper Articles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a device intended for creasing blanks, such as are used for umbrellas, as disclosed in the patent to Berman, No. 1,325,072. My invention is concerned with providing means for creasing such blanks, although various forms may be given to such blanks.
An object of my invention is to provide a device which will mechanically crease blanks for the purpose stated.
Another object is to provide a device for the purpose stated that is simple in construction and efficient in operation.
These and other objects are attained by the means described herein and disclosed in the accompanying drawings, in which- Fig. l is a plan View showing diagrammatically a device embodying my invention, parts being broken away.

My invention comprises a suitable table or bench upon which is mounted a fixed die upon which a blank may be deposited, and means to mould the blank, such as a sheet of heavy paper, over the fixed die so as to crease the blank in such a way tnat it may be folded in the desired manner and shape.

A reciprocating stem 04 is pivotally mounted upon the lever a and carries at its free end a roller (0 which ongages a cam M. The stem (0 extends reciprocally through a suitable frame or bracket a mounted upon the table a. From the foregoing it is readily apparent that as the shafts a and a are revolved, the engagement of the rollers a upon the cams causes the arm a to be moved toward or away from the fixed die a At the upper end of each of the arms a is mounted a movable die a, the lower fa es a and a of which are complementary to portions of the fixed die. These movable dies are sus pended from the arms in the following manner.
A block a is pivotally mounted upon the upper end of the arm a by means of the lugs a one each of which lie on opposite sides of an arm a- The blocks have pivotally mounted upon them at their opposite ends the links a, and a, which also pivotally support the movable dies a. The block carries a bracket a through which an adjustment screw a extends and which may be brought into engagement with the links a and a, and springs a which yieldingly retains the links in engagement upon the adjustment screws. The arm a carries a bracket a, between which and the movable die, extends a spring a which tends normally to retain the movable die in the position shown in Fig. 4-. The springs a are mounted upon the block on the side opposite to the brackets 04 and engage the links on the sides opposite to those which the screw (4. The springs cooperate with the aforementioned elements in retaining the parts in the relation stated.
The movable dies comprise a body (L68 having a back a on which are mounted the lugs a which lugs are pivotally connected with the links a and a, and sides a and a which sides are complementary to the adjacent sides of adjacent ridges formed in the cone or fixed die. The movable dies are so mounted that, as the arm moves tl e movable die toward the fixed die, the side a is first brought into engagement with the face a of ridge a and then the side a of the movable die is brought into engagement with the face a of the ridge (1. The face a of the movable die is slightly narrower than the faceof the ridge which it engages. The space between the end of the side a of the movable die and the top of the ridge engaged thereby, is engaged by a lug a formed on the side a of the next adj acent movable die. The lug a has a face a extending from the side a at the angle as that of the apex of the several ridges in the cones and therefore, a lug a", together with a side a of any movable die will ex tend completely over a side a" of any one ridge. From the end of the side (Z58 of each movable die, the face of the body of the die extends towards the links on such a curve that the curved nose a" formed on the lug a of the next adjacent movable die, can be brought into engagement with the face (r of a ridge before any other part of such next adjacent movable die engages said ridge. From this it is apparent that the moving dies are given a rocking or rolling motion in order to seat them between any two adjacent ridges on the fixed die. The structure of one pair of the movable dies having thus been described it will be sufficient for the remainingdies, as the shafts a and a have similar cams a spaced along their length and each movable die has a mechanism similar to that just described which is actuated by one of these cams a The cams a are positioned about the shafts o and a so as to successively operate the dies or to operate. them in any sequence desired. The operation of the device is as follows:
The operator actuates a lever a and causes the blank holder to be moved to a position over the fixed die. A blank of waterproofed paper is placed on the blank holder and the lever a actuated so as to move the pin a to the position shown in Fig. 2, the pin serving to retain the blank on the cone as the blank holder is moved from over the fixed die when the operator actuates the other hand lever (19. The hand lever 66 is then actuated and the cams a revolved. The cams bear such relation that the arms a are successively brought toward the paper blank. As the first arm approaches the fixed die, the nose on the movable die carried thereby engages the paper blank, and as the movable die moves about the pivots mounting it and the links upon one another and upon the block, the face on the lug is brought into engagement with the blank. The further movement of the arm brings the side a of the movable die into engagement with the face a of the first ridge on the cone. After the whole of the side a engages the blank, the further movement of the arm brings the side (1 of the movable die into engagement with the adjacent face of the adjacent ridge and the further movement of the arm causes the movable die to crease the paper at the bottom of the ridges. The lugs a crease the blank over the apex of the several ridges. It should be observed that blanks for the purpose stated are generally provided with a flat panel and in order to accomplish this, the first lug may be provided with a nose having a curved underface as disclosed in Fig. 4. After one movable die has been seated upon the blank, the next movable die is brought into operation by the cams. WVhen all the movable dies have been seated upon the blank, they are then lifted from the blank, which will then have been creased in the desired manner. The creased blank is then folded and is passed through a pair of parallel rollers such as a wash ringer in order to augment the lines of crease if not sufficiently pronounced.
lVhat I claim is:
1. A method for creasing waterproofed paper comprising successively moulding portions of the blank over a fixed die and of retaining the moulded portion upon the fixed die while moulding succeeding portions of the blank.
2. A method of creasing flexible foldable material of the kind described, consisting of securing the material at a given point, and of successively creasing sectors of the material on lines radiating from the secured point.
3. A method of creasing flexible foldable material of the class described, comprising securing the material at a determinable point upon a fixed die, and of successively bringing movable dies into engagement with portions of the material so as to crease the material, and of retaining each succeeding movable die in engagement upon the ma terial until all the movable dies have performed their work upon the material.
a. An apparatus for creasing waterproofed, flexible, foldable material, comprising a fixed die, means to secure a blank of said material upon the fixed die, and means to successively mould adjacent portions of the blank over the fixed die.
5. An apparatus for creasing waterproofed, flexible, foldable material, comprising a fixed die, movable dies mounted radially in relation to the fixed die and each movable die being adapted to mold a sector of the material, means to secure the material at a point central to the radii upon which the movable dies are mounted, and means to actuate the movable dies.
6. An apparatus for creasing Waterproofed, flexible, foldable material, comprising a fixed die, movable dies mounted radially in relation to the fixed die and each movable die being adapted to mold a sector of the material, means to secure the material at a point central to the radii upon which the movable dies are mounted, and means to successively bring the movable dies intoengagement with the fixed die.
7. An apparatus for creasing waterproofed, flexible, foldable material, comprising a table, a fixed die mounted upon the table, movable dies mounted pivotally on the table, means adapted to secure a blank of said material on the fixed die, and means to successively bring the movable dies into engagement with the fixed die.
8. In a device of the class described, the combination of a fixed die, a blank holder adapted to be reciprocated to and from a position above the fixed die and to position a blank above the die, means adapted to secure the blank upon the fixed die, and movable dies adapted to successively mould radially extending segments of the blank on the fixed die. In a device of the class described, the combination of a table, a fixed die mounted on the table, a blank holder reciprocally mounted upon the table, means to move the blank holder to and from a position above the fixed die, movabledies pivotally mounted upon the table, means to secure a blank upon the fixed die, and means adapted to suecessively actuate the movable dies and to bring them into engagement with the fixed die in the sequence of their mounting upon the table.
10. In a device of the class described, the combination of a table, a fixed die mounted on the table, movable dies mounted on the table, means to secure a blank upon the fixed die, a cam shaft mounted on the table, cams mounted on the cam shaft, and a connection between the cams and the movable dies, the cams being adapted to successively actuate the movable dies in the order of their mounting.
11. In a device of the class described, the combination of a table, a fixed die mounted on the table, movable dies mounted on the table, a blank holder mounted on the table, means to move the blank holder to and from a position above the fixed die, means to secure a blank upon the fixed die, a cam shaft mounted on the table, cams mounted on the cam shaft, and connections between the cams and the movable dies, the cams being adapted to successively bring adjacent movable dies into engagement with the fixed die.
12. In a device of the class described, the combination of a table, a fixed die mounted on the table, movable dies mounted on the table, a blank holder mounted on the table, means to move the blank holder to and from a position above the fixed die, means to secure a blank upon the fixed die, a cam shaft mounted on the table, cams mounted on the cam shaft, and connections between the cams and the movable dies, the cams being adapted to successively bring adjacent movable dies into engagement with the fixed die, and to retain the movable dies in engagement with the blank until all of the movable dies have performed their work upon the blank.
13. In a device of the class described, the combination of a conical fixed die having ridges radiating from the apex thereof, movable dies mounted adjacent to the fixed die and each being adapted to seat in one of the grooves between adjacent ridges and to extend over the top of one of said ridges, and means to give to the movable dies a rolling motion as they are moved into engagement with the fixed die whereby the movable die will be brought into engage ment with the face of one ridge of the fixed die before being brought into engagement with any portion of the succeeding adjacent faces of the ridges.
14:. In a device of the class described, the combination of a fixed die having a conical shape and ridges radiating from the apex thereof, arms mounted pivotally adjacent the fixed die, blocks pivotally mounted upon the arms, movable dies adapted to seat in the grooves between adjacent ridges on the fixed die, links having their opposite ends pivotally mounted upon the movable dies and blocks, brackets mounted on the blocks, and means yieldingly retaining the movable die in such position that the links are held in engagement with the brackets, and means to actuate the arms.
15. In a device of the class described, the combination of a fixed die having a conical shape and ridges radiating from the apex thereof, arms mounted pivotally adjacent the fixed die, blocks pivotally mounted upon the arms, movable dies adapted to seat in the grooves between adjacent ridges on the fixed die, links having their opposite ends pivotally mounted upon the movable dies and blocks, brackets mounted on the blocks, means yieldingly retaining the die in such position that the links are held in engagement with the brackets, and means to suecessively actuate the arms whereby adjacent movable dies are successively brought into engagement with the fixed die.
16. In a device of the class described, the combination of a conical fixed die having ridges radiating from the apex thereof, movable dies each having a moulding face cornplementary to those portions of succeeding ridges extending from the place adjacent the apex of one ridge to the opposite face of said ridge and a portion of the face of the adjacent ridge, and means to actuate the movable dies in such manner that the first mentioned portion. ofthe movable die will be brought into engagement with the first mentioned face of a ridge on the fixed die, and which contact between the movable and fixed dies then becomes a. pivot about which the remainder of the movable die is actuated as it is moved toward its seat between the said ridge and the next adjacent ridge.

In a device of the class described, the combination of a conical fixed die having ridges radiating from the apex thereof, movable dies each having a moulding face complemei'itary to those portions of succeeding ridges extending from the place adjacent the apex of one ridge to the opposite face of said ridge and a portion of the face of the adjacent ridge means to actuate the movable dies in such manner that the first mentioned portion of the movable die will be brought into engagement with the first mentioned face of a ridge on the fixed die, and which contact between the movable and fixed die then. becomes a pivot about:- which the remainder of the movable die is actuated as it is moved toward its seat between the said ridge and the next adjacent ridge, and means to successively actuate the movable die in the order of the ridges which they engage.
18. In a device of the class described, the combination of a fixed die, arms mounted pivotally adjacent the fixed die, a block mounted pivotally upon each arm, movable dies, links pivotally connecting the movable dies and the: blocks, brackets mounted on the arms, brackets mounted upon the blocks, adjustment screws mounted upon the second mentioned brackets, and means mounted upon the first mentioned brackets and upon the movable dies yieldingly retaining the links in engagement with the set screws.
19. In a device of the class described, the combination of a fixed die, arms mounted pivotally adjacent the fixed die, a block mounted pivotally upon each arm, movable dies, links pivotally connecting the movable dies and the blocks, brackets mounted on the arms, brackets mounted upon the blocks, adjustment screws mounted upon the second mentioned brackets, means mounted upon the first mentioned brackets and upon the movable dies yieldingly retaining the links in engagement with the set screws, and means mounted on the block yieldingly hear: ing upon the links and yieldingly cooperatcombination of a table, a fixed die mounted on the table, a blank holder adapted to be moved to and from a position above the fixed die, means adapted to actuate the blank holder moving means, means to automatieally render the blank holder moving means inoperative upon the blank holder, means to secure a blank upon the fixed die, movable dies adapted to be brought into engagement with the fixed die, means adapted to actuate the movable dies, and means to control the movable die actuating means.
