DISPENSING AND MEASURING PUMP.
Application filed October 10, 1922. swarm. 593,555.
To all whom) it may concern."
Be it known that I, CHARLES SPAETH, a citizen Cleveland, in the county of Onyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Dispensing and Measuring Pump, of which the following is a specification.
' This invention relates to a dispensing and measuring pump of the type which connects with and is mounted upon the head of a barrel or drum and provided with an intake pipe extending into'the barrel. These pumps are especially designed for attachment and use with. the steel barrels or drums commonly employed to ship and'store oil and grease, and the present pump is particularly constructed to permit a quick and convenient attachment and an operative connection to be made with barrels and drums of difl'erent sizes and.capacities. In this connection it should be understood that the barrels and drums in use vary considerably in height th and diameter and that to make an operative connection capable of permitting all of the contents to be withdrawn it is necessary that the intake end of the pipe for the pump be the extreme bottom of thebarrel. It is also advantageous to have the pump body mounted in a stable manner upon the head of the barrel and not on the intake pipe itself, and to serve such useful ends and purposes I have constructed the pump in a particular wa all as hereinafter shown and described an more concisely pointed out in the claims. 1
' In the annexed'drawings, elevation of my improved to a steel barrelof small Fig. I is a side pump attached mg in section and part thereof being sectional view of the same pump attached to a much larger steel barrel and sh intake pipe extended its full length and restthe barrel. ig. 3 P p andbarrel, the barrel and the pump intake pipe being broken away and foreshorte'ned to rmit the bottom portion of the barrel to e shown on the sheet.
general practice at the present time is to ship and store oil and grease in barrels or drums-made either of wood or metal, but more commonly the latter, for example a time] 2 such as shown in the drawings." A
of the United States, residing at b size, the barrel owing thefalls below the upper end screw-threaded bung opening 3 of standard size is provided in the head 4 whether the arrel be large or small. Intothis bung opening I screw a tubular fitting or coupling member 5 which is provided with a reduced screw-threaded extremity 6 for that purpose. The upper end of coupling member 5 has a relatively long and smooth bore 7 and a boss 8 atone side of this bore. The pump base 9 has a shouldered bottom face 10 adapted to seat upon the flat top ofmemher 5, and also a reduced round extension 11 adapted to extend into bore 7 and fit tightly therein, a set screw 12 being extended through boss 8 to secure the parts together; The chambered middle portion of coupling member 5 is also provided at one side with a boss 13 adapted to receive a short horizontal drain pipe 14 which connects with and supports an overflow or drain pan 15 directly above the head of the barrel, although the coupling member may be rotated to place e pan over or beyond the chime of the barrel if necessary ordesired. Pan 15 has a vertical border flange 16 and a dished or sloping bottom 17, and thereceptacle or container C which is to receive the oil is adapted upwardly into member 5 and connects with thetubula'r extension 11 ofpump base 9.
.' Pipe 20 isrela'tively lon' but of less length than the smaller sizes 0 use. An extension sleeve'or tube 21 is therebarrels in general foreslidablyfitted overthe lower end of pipe 20, and the bottom end of the pipe is anged outwardly at 22 to engage an inner shoulder 23 within theupper end portion of the sleeve or tube 21 so as to secure these parts together and limit the telescopic movement outwardly of tube 21. A screw-threaded ring or gland 24 is sleeved on pipe 20 and screwed into the upper end of extension tube 21 to compress the packing 25 and maintain a tight joint around the slidable joint, as otherwise a leak at this pointmight interfere with the functioning of the pump, especially when the liqiud level in the barrel of extension tube movement thereof.
and exposes the joint to atmospheric pressure, a vent passage being open through drain'pipe 14. v The bottomend edge of extension tube 20 is notched'or scalloped to permit the oil to enter the tube when at rest upon the bottom head 26 of the barrel, and if the barrel is a small one or relatively. short in length the extension tube 21 is telescoped more or less over pipe 20 as shown in Fig. 1. This setting or relationship of parts occurs when coupling member 5 is screwed intothe bung-opening or the pump is en within thejcoupling memteredand secured her, and in the case of a larger barrel the extension tube 21 adjusts itself or is selfregulable to the'length of the barrel as suming that it is extended to its limit when just introduced into the barrel. The lower portion of the intake pipe is reduced in diameter which provides a stop shoulder 2() to limit the upward movement of tube 21, and the flanged end 22 limits the downward Tube 21 is also smaller in diameter than the coupling end 6 of memher 5 to permit it to pass through the opening in thehead of the barrel.
Pump P may be constructed in various wa s, but as shown the base 9 thereof has a anged enlargement adapted to seat the cylinder'27, and a suitable valve 28 controls the intake port 29 in this base. piston or plunger 30 is adapted to be reciprocated within the cylinder by means of a pinion 31 journaled in the dome-shaped head 32 of the pump, and a crank handle 33 is aflixed to the exposed end of the pinion shafti l t to rotate the pinion and operatetheplungerrod 35 which is provided withirack teeth at one side meshing with the teeth of the pinion. Plunger 34: extends through the top of head 32 and is guided thereby, but inasmuch as the rack teeth permi; escape of the oil" at this point the rod tube is screwed is encased by a tube .35 which is closed at its top bya cap, 37. The bottom end of this into the-upper side of the head and it is of larger diameter internally than the outer diameter of the plunger ro A valved so that a chamber is provided toreceive and hold oi'l during the operation of the; pump;
A goose-neck discharge spout 38 15 connected with one side of head 32, and the discharge end of this s out is located at a higher elevation than tlie head directl above the drain pan. A screw 39 exten s through cap 37 to regulate within limits the stroke of the plunger and the amount of liquid to be delivered.
What I claim, is:
1. A dispensing and measuring pump having a tubular base provided with a reduced integral extension, a separate hollow coupling member adapted to receive said extension having an open screw-threaded reduced ortion adapted to be'inse'rted and secure ti htly within an opening in the head of a arrel, a drain pipe connected with the side of said separate coupling member, a set screw at one side of said coupling member adapted to engage said pump base extension, a pipe extending through said coupling member and connected with said pump base extension, and an extensible inlet tube slidably sleeved upon said pi e adapted to permit said pump to be use with barrels of different sizes and capacities.
2. A dispensing and measuring pump having a base provided with a round smooth extension, a hollow coupling member having a smooth bore at its upper end ada ted to receive said extension and a reduce lower end which is screw-threaded to fit within a screw-threaded opening in a barrel, a drain pan having a lateral drain pipe connected with said hollow coupling member, an intake pipe for the pump extending through said coupling member and connected with said pump base, a tubular extension slidably mounted upon the lower end of said intake pipe, and spaced stops on said pipe limiting the slidable movement of said tubular extension thereon.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature hereto.
GHARLES SPAETH.
