UNITED STATES JESSE TOWERS, 0F CHICOPEE, MASSACHUSETTS.
LOOM PICKIER.
Application filed April 13, 1923. Serial No. 631%54.
To all whom it may concem:
Be it known that I, Jnssn TOWERS, a citizen residing at Chicopee, in the "county .of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and. useful Improvements in Loom Pickers, of
is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in loom pickers or shuttle drivers.
The primary object of this invention is the provision of a, very durable type of loom picker, embodying improvements in the clamping means for adjustably anaintaining the picker head upon the staff p013 tion; improvements in the picker or shuttle cushion; and providing a loom picker which is relatively simple in construction.
. Other objects and advantages of this invention will of course be apparent during the following detailed description.
In the accompanying drawing, forming a partof this specification, and wherein sini ilar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the imroved loom picker.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal cross sectional view, taken through the body or head of the improved loom picker, showing the cooperating details thereof.
Figure 8 is a plan view of the improved loom picker.
Figure 4: is a cross sectional view, taken substantially on the line 1-4: of Figure 3.
Figure 5-is a front elevation of the body of the improved loom picker, showing the picker or shuttle cushion as associated therewith.
In the drawing, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown but the preferred embodiment of this invention, the letter A may generally designate the improved loom picker and shuttle cushion, which may include the body or head portion B; picker cushion C; %icker stick .1); and novel clampin means eferring to the body or head portion B, the same is preferably constructed of aluminum, or analogous material, and is preferably of elongated formation, providing a substantially rectangular shaped passageway 10 therethrough, eccentrically thereon, adapted to receive the tapered end of picker stick D therethrough. The forward portion 11 of the improved picker body B is preferably provided with a recess 12 open- -novel formation. This the forward face 13 being provided for repicker cushion G and being of recess is preferably frusto-conical in formation and of greatest diameter adjacent the bottom surface 15 thereof, and of least diameter at the face 13 of the body B. This recess 12 is preferably interiorly screw threaded, or annularly grooved or serrated to facilitate attachment of the picker cushion C- therein. It is thus obvious that the shaft receiving passageway spect to the axis of the picker recess 12, and it is preferredto provide a relatively small opening 18, which may be axially arranged with the picker recess 12 and communicates the same with the shaft receiving passageway 10. At the sides of the passage way 10 opposite to the communication of the opening 18 therewith, a screw threaded passageway or opening 20 is provided, extending through the body B into said passageway 10, for receiving certain detailsof the clamping means E to. be subsequently described. This screw threaded passageway 20 is in direct alignment with the communicating opening 18, for a purpose which will be subsequently set forth.
Referring to the picker cushion C, the same may be of various constructions, and may include a body of yieldable material 25, which may be spirally wound into sub stantially cylindrical shape. and forced into the picker recess 12 of the body- B. As it is preferred that the picker recess 12 be interiorly screw threaded from the forward face 13 thereof, it is obvious that the picker cushion C may be readily screwed into the recess 12, and firmly compressed to provide a relatively hard, although to a certain extent yieldable body, which may engage the shuttle for impelling purposes, as is well known to those skilled in the art to which this invention pertains. At the center of the body 25, a wedge shaped core 28 may be provided, which is driven inwardly from the forward face of the body, and expands the body 25 into annular engagement with the recess 12, and more particularly with the annular grooves or screw threads therein, as to obviate any accidental displacement of the cushion from its body B. The inner surface of the picker is, of course, in engagement with the botton 1 15 of the recess 12, and when in such position the forward ing inwardly from thereof; said recess ceiving the 10 is arranged transversely with reface of the cushion C, both as to its body or main portion 25 and the core 28, is flush with the-face 13 of the body B.
Referring to the clamping means E, for
the securing of the body B upon the picker stick D, the same preferably includes a jaw plate 30, adapted for cooperation within the staff receiving opening or passageway 10, and to be urged into engagement with the picker stick D by means of an adjusting or clamping screw or bolt 81. This aw plate is of novel construction, including a rectangular shaped portion 35, which fits within the recess 10 as to be capable of sliding transversely thereof. and the forward face of which plate portion is transversely serrated, grooved or toothed, providing V-shaped teeth 36, which may bite into an adjacent side of the picker stick D. Retaining wings 37 and 38 are preferably provided above and below the passageway 10, outwardly thereof, which laterally eitend over the top and bottom surfaces of the body B to prevent accidental disconnection of the clamping plate 30 with respect to the body B, either during an adjustingoperation, or when the picker stick D is removed from its body passageway 10. Thus, it can be readily understood that the clamping plate 30 may only be removed by removing the picker stick I), and moving the same transversely of the recess 10 for about 90, and the same will then be so positioned that the laterally extending offsets of the re-- taining wings 37 and 38 are clear of the top and bottom surfaces of the body B.
The clamping plate 30 is of course positioned adjacent the screw threaded opening 20, as the clamping bolt or screw 31 is adjustably positioned in said screw threaded opening 20, and at its inner end is preferably provided with an annular biting edge 40, which may engage the outer relatively flat surface of the clamping plate 30. The screw threaded shank 41 of the bolt31. is of considerable length, and is preferably provided with a wrench head 42 to facilitate adjustment of the same. A lock nut 44 is preferably provided, for the shank 41, and which may be adjusted therealong, into engagement with the inner face 45 of the head B, after thesc-rew 31 has positioned the jaw 30 into a proper glamping action with the picker stick D. It is'preferred to provide acushion member 50, preferably of leather, which may be disposed in the staff passageway 10 and in engagement with the side of said passageway through which the opening 18 communicates, and which of course engages the opposite side of the staff from that upon which the clamping action is imposed. This prevents mutilation of the picker stick D, and in no wise interferes with the clamp ing action,
From the foregoing description of this invention, has been provided, which makes provision for the durable securing of a picker or shuttle cushion therein. As a practical feature of this invention, the body B may be used until the same is of no further value. To this end the cushion C, after the same is of no further value, may be removed from the body B, simply by inserting a spindle or replacing tool, through the alinged openings 18 and 20 of the body B, and by the application of a force thereon, the picker cushion C may be pushed outwardly from its recess 12. The clamping means l) has been polfccted so that the same will not mutilate the picker stick D, as generally happens with ordinary clamping expcdients. The
,plate 30 is thus an important feature, as the same exerts the clamping action over a considerable arear of the picker stick D, and will permit of no relative movement of the picker stick D with respect thereto, incident to the biting of the teeth 36 into said picker stick. It is to be noted that the adjusting screw 31 does not provide any direct action or engagement upon the picker stick I), and therefore there will be no liability of splitting 'of the staff incident to the clamping action. An important feature of the invention is the provision of the locking nut -14, by means of which the clamping screw or member 31 may be maintained to efi ect the desired clamping action upon the picker stick D, against liability of any displacement except manual adjustment.
Various changes in the shape, size, and formation of parts, may be made to the form of invention herein shown "and described, without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the claim.
I claim:
As an article of manufacture, a head for loom pickers having a substantially :t'rustoconic "picker receiving recess therein which is of greater diameter at its inner end than at its outer end, the walls of the recess being provided with annularly disposed serrations spaced from the bottom of the recess, a (011]- pressible cushion formed from a strip of yieldable material rolled to provide a body having convolutions, said body fitting in the recess for the entire depth thereof and expandin therein'to fill the recess and having close tting engagement with the walls thereof between the serrations and bottom of the recess, and a wedge driven into the center convolution from outer end of the cushion when the cushion is in place and serving to expand the cushion and force the outer convo ution into the serrations and retain the cushlon in tight gripping Imgagcment with the serrations.
