OTTU L. BRUBAKER, OF SAN JOSE, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR T0 AUGUSTUS M. TUREL, GF SAN JOSE, CALIFORNIA.
CARTRIDGE ADAPTER AND AMIVIUNITION THEREFOR.
Application led September 24, 1923i.
To all whom t may {conce/m.'
Be it known that I, O'r'ro L. BRUBAKER, a citizen of the United States, and resident of San Jose, Santa Clara County, California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cartridge Adapters and Ammunition Therefor, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has for its object a device adapted to be inserted in the chamber of a shotgun whereby the shotgun may be employed for discharging cartridges and also blank cartridges with a small charge of shot and is particularly applicable for practice shooting and for the killing of farm pests.
By referring to the accompanying drawings and specifications my invention will be readily understood.
Referring to the accompanying drawing:
Figure l shows a side View of my cartridge adapter.
Figures 2 and 3 are end views of Figure l.
Figure 4 is an enlarged longitudinal section of the device of Figure l.
Figures 5 and 6 are enlarged fragmentary longitudinal sections showing the adapter being employed with a rifle cartridge and with a blank cartridge and charge of shot respectively.
Figure 7 shows the adapter in the act of ejecting an expended shell.
Throughout the figures the same numerals refer to identical parts. A body portion of my adapter is shown at 1, having a threaded extension 2 with which an ejector collar 3 is engaged. The. bore 4 is adapted to pass the bullet 5 with the exception of the rifling G and 7, which projects sufliciently into the bore to provide the necessary twisting' impulse whereby the bullet 5 when ejected from the cartridge 8 follows a spiral path as well known in conventional riiie bores. The bore 4 is relieved at 9 for the shell 8, which, when forced into positioni as shown in Figures 4 or 5, frictionally engages at l() on a suitable reduced bore provided by the riflings 6, 7. It is understood that the adapter as shown in Figures 4, 5 or 6 is made to fit the shell chamber of any conven- Serial No. 664,435.
cartridge S The shell is then ejected by -unscrewing the collar a sufficient amount upon the threaded portion 2 to disengage the shell from its frictional engagement at l0, all as shown in Figure 7 when the shell freely falls out of the adapter and the collar 3 is again screwed into the position of Figure 4 and a new charge inserted. Milled surfaces are provided at 20, 2l to facilitate handling the parts.
Referring particularly to Figure 6 a blank cartridge is shown at 18 which fits the adapter exactly the same as the shell S of Figures 4 and and in advance thereof is shown a capsule 14 filled with conventional shot 15, the capsule frictionally engaging against the rifling 6, 7 and is held in place after being forced against the riiiing by the cartridge 13, in the position shown in the figure. vWhen the cartridge 13 is discharged the shot is propelled through the bore 4. Such ammunition I have found to be well adapted to the killing of small birds and the protection of growing crops and trees from the usual farm pests.
l claim:
1. In combination with a cartridge adapter, a blank cartridge, and a separate gelatin capsule charged with shot.
2. In combination with a cartridge adapter, a blank cartridge, and a separate gelatin capsule charged with shot said capsule comprising two hemispherical end sections telescoped together.
3. In combination with a cartridge adapter, a blank cartridge, and a separate gelatin capsule charged with shot frictionally engaging the bore of said adapter.
4. In combination with a cartridge adapter, a blank cartridge, and a separate gelatin capsule charged with shot said capsule comprising two hemispherical end sections telescoped together frictionally engaging the bore of said adapter.
Y OTTO L. BRUBAKER.
