C. E. WARNER SWIVEL SHELL ATTACHMENT PLUG Filed Aug. 18. 1920 Patented Dec. 2, 1924.
UNETQ fiTfirTS CHESTER 113.
WARNER, F BEBWYN, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNO'R TO BENJAMIN ELECTRIC MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
SWIVEL-SHELL ATTACHFIENT PLUG.
Application filed August 18, 1920. Serial No. 404,366.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHESTER E. WARNER, a citizen of the United states, residing at Berwyn, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Swivel-Shell Attachment Plugs, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to electrical connector devices and more specifically to swivel shell attachment plugs.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide an improved electrical connector device which will be easy to wire, durable and efficient in use, and cheap to manufacture.
Further objects will appear from the detailed description to follow and from the appended claims.
In the drawing in which an embodiment of my invention is shown Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a swivel shell attachment plug;
Fig. 2 is a plan view on an enlarged scale of the plug shown in Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is an axial section through the plug substantially on the line 33 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is a bottom plan view of the plug with the cord-grip and handle member re moved;
Fig. 5 is a section substantially on the line 5-5 of Fig. 3, and
Fig. 6 is a section substantially on the line 6--6 of Fig. 3.
The plug shown in the drawing comprises in a general way an insulating body portion or core 10, a center contact 11 supported by this insulating core, a shell contact 12 swiveled about the insulating body 10, wiring terminals 13 and 14 for the center contact 11 and shell contact 12 respectively and a combined cord-grip and handle member 15 for relieving the wiring terminals 13 and 14 from any strain due to a pull on the conductors 16. This cord-grip member 15 is screwed onto a threaded extension 17 formed integral with the body portion 10.
The insulating body portion 10 is insert ible into a threaded shell contact 12 at the entering end thereof, the extension 17 projecting outwardly from this shell contact, when in place. The wiring terminal 13 is located in a recess 18 in that part of the body portion 10 which is within the threaded shell contact, while the wiring terminal 14 is located in a recess 19 in the extension 17 of the body portion 10, which projects outwardly from the threaded shell contact 12. Open channels or passages 20 and 21 are provided for the feed wires 16 leading to the wiring terminals 17 and 14 respectively, the conductors 16 being pinched against the entrance of these passages by the inwardly extending edge or shoulder portion 22 of the cord-grip member 15.
The binding plate of the wiring'terminal 14 may be formed as a part or" an integral sheet metal stamping 23, which also'has a portion extending from the binding plate portion and engaging the inwardly extending flange or shoulder 24 of the threaded shell contact 12, whereby the wiring terminal 14 is always electrically connected with the threaded shell contact 12.
The binding plate of the wiring terminal 13 and the center contact 11 may both be formed as integral parts of a sheet metal stamping 25, which has a portion bent into U-shape to straddle a supporting portion 26 of the insulating body 10. The binding screw 27 of the wiring terminal 13 extends through the binding plate and is threaded into a nut 28 located in a recess in the side of the insulating body portion 10. The binding screw 29 of the wiring terminal 14 extends through an opening in its binding plate and is threaded into a nut 80 which is seated in a recess in the side of the extension 17 of the insulating body 10.
The circuit is from the center contact 11, through the sheet metal stamping 25, the wiring terminal 13, thence through the plug circuit to the wiring terminal 14, and through the sheet metal stamping 23 to the threaded shell contact 12.
In wiring the plug, the cord-grip and handle member 15 is unscrewed from the threaded extension 17 and slipped over the ends of the conductors 16. The threaded shell contact 12 is also slipped over the ends of the conductors 16, and the ends of these conductors are then secured to the binding terminals 13 and 14 respectively. The insulating body portion 10 is then shoved into the threaded shell contact 12, the extension 17 projecting outwardly from the threaded shell contact, and the cord-grip member 15 is then screwed onto this threaded extension to grip the cords 16 to relieve the strain on the wiring terminals.
To screw the plug into the socket, the plug is held in one hand by means of the handlemember l5, and presented in proper position to the socket. The threaded shell contact 12 is then screwed into the socket by means of the insulating thumb-piece 31, the threaded shell contact being screwed into place without rotating the insulating body piece 10 which carries the wiring terminals. I
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. A swivel shell attachment plug comprising-an insulating base having av body portion and a reduced threaded extension, and a shoulder portion between said body portion, and extension, a threaded shell contact having an inwardly extending annular flange swiveled on saidshoulder portion, acentercontact mounted on said body portion,-a wiring terminal for said center contact mounted on said body portion inside said threaded shell contact, a wiring terminal for said shell contact mounted on said threaded extension outside said threaded shell contact, and a cord grip member screwed on said threaded extension for holding said swivel shell in place on said shoulder and gripping the cords leading to said wiring terminals.
2. A swivel shell attachment plug comprising an insulating base having a body portion and a. reduced threaded extension, and a shoulder portion between said body portion and extension, a threaded shell contact having an inwardly extending flange swiveled on said shoulder portion, a center contact mounted on said body portion, wiring terminals for said contacts mounted on said insulating base, and a cord-grip member screwed on said threaded extension for holding said swivel shell in place on said shoulder and gripping the cords leading to said wiring terminals.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto subscribed my name.
CHESTER E. VARNER.
