G. STEIDINGER HAND PLANE Filed April 16 1924 ILZOI' 60@ (Wim /r Patented Dec. 2, 1924.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HAND PLANE.
Application filed April 16, 1924.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORG STEIDINGER, acitizen of the Republic of Germany, having declared my intentions of becoming a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphial and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hand Planes, of which the following is a specification.
One object of my invention is to provide an improved hand planeof such construction that it will be of particular value for planing work which is ordinarily di'liicult :and tedious; my improved plane being so shaped and constructed that it can be readily and conveniently operated by either hand or at various angle-s to accurately plane such line work as grooved, corrugated, fluted or irregularly shaped rails, banisters, mouldings, and cabinet work. Furthermore. my improved plane is of such formation that it can be used to easily approach and plane such rails, etc., on either side and to plane work which is located in positi-ons ordinarily diiiicult or impossible to plane owing to insufficient working room.
Another object is to make my improved plane of a durable and light weight construction and to provide improved means for adjusting` the cutting blades or bits.
A further object is to make my improved plane of such construction that certain of the parts can be readily adjusted relatively to the bits or replaced by other parts so as to allow various uses to suit different requirements.
Another object is to provide a structure by which the bits can be finely and accurately adjusted and maintained in position by a simple and easy movement on the part of the operator and so that th-e work done will be of such character as to require little, if any, reinishing after the planing oper* ation.
These objects and other advantageous ends which will be set forth hereinafter', I attain in the following manner, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, i-n which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a hand plane made in accordance with my present invention,
Serial No. 706,906.
Figure 2 is an end view of the plane shown in Figure 1,
Figure 3 is a top plan view of Figure 1 Figure 4 is a top plan view of one of the bit-retaining members constituting a part of my invention,
Figure 5 is a sectional view taken on the line 5 5 of Figure 4 with a retaining or suspension pivot bolt which I preferably employ,
Figure 6 is a sectional view taken on the line 6-6 of Figure 5,
Figure 7 is an end view of the member shown in Figure 4, and
Figure 8 is an elevational view showing a modified form of my invention.
Referring to the drawing and particularly to Figures 1 to 7 inclusive, 10 represents the main body portion of my improved plane which is preferably made of aluminum. This body portion includes a neck 11 which joins two planing stocks 12 and 13, said stocks being arranged in stepped formation as clearly shown in Figure 1. The stock 12 includes an adjustable section 14, and the stock 13 includes an adjustable section 15. Viewed from Figure l thesr` sections 14 and 15 are adjustable vertically, and are secured in said adjustable manner to extensions or arms 16 and 17 by screws 18, the sections slidably interlocking with the arms with a tongue and groove construction 19 as clearly shown in Figures 2 and 3. It will be noted that by loosening the screws 18, the sections 14 and 15 can be adjusted or if desired, said sections can be removed, by removing the screws 18, and other sections of different shapes (not illustrated) can be substituted therefor.
'Ihe stock 12 has a recess 2O which extends therethrough from side to side and at its bottom forms an interruption 21 of the planing surface 22 of the stock 12, the forward portion of said planing surface being formed by the section 14. In lik-e manner the stock 18 has a recess 23 which extends from side to side and at its top, viewed from Figure 1, forms an interruption 24 in the planing surface 25, said planing surface at its front being formed by the section 15.
The wall 26 of the recess 2O is preferably concave in the direction of its height as shown in Figure l and forms a support or backing for the bit 27, said bit being` nrmally straight in the direction of its length so that when pressed against the wall 26 it willbow or slightly fle-rt so as to be kent under tension.
A bit-retaining member 28 is located within the recess and serves jointly as a retainng and adjusting member for the bitf 2?; This member 28 as shown in detail inFigures fi to 7 inclusiveIn has aV cavity 29 which communicates with a slot 3() in the top of said member. The top surface 3l is preferably made convento a slight degree and includes a notch it bolt 38 has hat oppo-` site side portions 34E: adapted to. :lit within the slotand around head 35 adapted to fit within the; cavity 29. The bolt 33 en tends upwardly through hole 36in the arm lGi and at its top is screw threaded to rece've a nut- Ssaid'nut 3i' is adapt-eid to bear upon the-top surface said arm i6. TheI hole 3o, is preferably made slightly largen indiT ameter. than is `the boltf 3B. to allow a slight lateral movement of the/holtl fori a purpose hereinafter rendered obvious'. in adjusting' screw 39 fits within atapped'holefinthe arm 1G, Said hole leadlngf entirely through said arm 16, fronr the-top surface 381 to. the recess 20.' The lower end ofv said screw 39 is adapted toL freely fit in the notch 32. The surface` i0 of the member. 28 is-adaptedf to engage the bit within its length and pressit I against; the, surface 267 and in this manner the b't is` securely held and slight` adjustment of the cut-ting edge il? canibe had by turning the adjusting screw 39 so` as to cause: the. member 28 to. sl/ghtly rock and vanythe amount olf flex of the bit in like, manner the wall 2Ga of the recess is concavewithinvits height and forms4 aV support or backing for the bit 27, said bft; befing` normally straight in the direction of itslength sothat when pressed againstthe wall 26.@ itw-illfbow or slightly flor; and be kept` unden tension. A bit-retaining member 28a is located within the recess 213 and senves jointly a retainingandi adjusting member A for vthe bit' 27a. The: memben 2ST is similar in.y construction to the member 2S above. descrbedand includes a cavityr 29 in which is positionedtheround head 35?* of bolt Swhich extends through holea inthe anni l? of thel stock-` 13 and is provided witha nut 37?.l adjustingzscrew SSP-tits Within"l a. tapped hole in the arm 17 and bears upon-themember 28aL "navinanner simi lanto that described in.commotionwithA the screw. 392 and member 28; In otheriwo-rds the; bolt 3B@ has a fiata portion. which .engages Within a. slot similar. to. the. slot; andathe biti 27?' is therefore: retained. and adjustable inthe sameifmanner.: sthe bit. 27.
@onsidering that the.A stockV 12, is to; be yn-sedil for. planing; purposes-5, the; Workman grasgospthe. stock. 13.3. in his: hand with: the
In lilte manner, when the. stock. 13` is beingrv used for planng, purposesj the stock 12 can be grasped in the hand withtheisurfzuee 22 against the palm of the hand, the space la serving in capacityv similar to` that de- 'ibed in4 connection with the space il, and :he thumb and the first linger of the hand an embrac the stock ladjaccnt opposite sdcs oli the member 28. lt will thus be noted that when either one of the .stocks is being used for planing purposes, the bit of the. planing stock will hc positioned to the rear ofthe bit which is not' doing the planing? thus allow'ngthe worlnnan. to centraline his attention solelji." on the stock which is doing; the work,7 the other stock being concealed by the. workmans hand. Furthermore, in the construction illust ated, when either one ofthe stocks is beine; used for pla-.ningl purposes, the. other stoel: and ht will be to the rear of the cuttingjiedgc o l' the hit which is doing thc planing.
It has been found. in actual use of the. plane that the arrangement and coustriu-iion above set forth enables parts of wort?` to he planed which previously could uol; be practicallvv planed owing` to interference of the worlnnans. hand and-` parts. of the plane stock The planing surfaces 22 and 25 can he made anv suitable shape to suit specialwork as can also be the cuttingfedges of the bits 27 and` 27a.
The neck'll centrally connects the stocks l2 andv 13; and thusv it is; possible to provide theV unobstructed Spaces 41. and. 41".
Furthermore, the-provision of the. longitudinallv extending arms; 16 andzl? provide a convenient mounting for the adjusting and securine'fmeans: for the respective bitsi In Figure Ir have shown a single-stock plane' embracing certain of thezadvantageous features ofmyinvention as above described such for example as the means for. retaining andadjusting thebit andforward section of the;A stock, and? I havetherefore given correspending parts similar reference characters Sil to those described in connection with the plane previously set forth. In said Figure S, however, I have illustrated a rearwardly extending downwardly curved portion 44 serving as a rest for the rear portion of the palm of the hand when the plane is grasped in the hand.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
