IMPROVEMENT IN DIES FOR FORMING HINGED BRlDLE-BITS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 151,755 dated June 9, 1874; application filed November 8, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, EMEROUS D. GLAPP and FREDERICK VAN PATTEN, of Auburn, in the'county of Cayuga and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Die for Making Mouth-Pieces of Bridle-Bits; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a top view of the lower half of the die as constructed for making one-half of ajointed mouth-piece. Fig. 2 is an inverted view of the-upper half of said die. Fig. 3 is a section of the upper and lower halves of the die, with one of the halves of the mouth-piece between them. Fig. at is a section of one-half of the mouth-piece as it comes from the die. Fig. 5 shows the two halves, in plan, as they come from the die. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the two halves of a mouth-piece as finished and united together.
' My invention consists in a die for making blanks for jointed mouth-pieces of bridle-bits, said die producing the blanks with heads, which have countersunk sockets in them on opposite sides, the bottom of said sockets being simply a thin web of metal, which can be readily punched out, and thus the bridlering holes and the linking-eyes formed without drilling or boring the same, and the advantage of having nearly all the metal which would be drilled or punched out to form the eyes or holes forced into the heads, and a more solid and strong head produced, is secured.
A is a half-round groove formed in the lower die-block B. At each end of this groove an enlarged circular cavity, 13, is formed, the groove and cavity intersecting one another, as shown. C G are raised circular projections, of slightly conical form, extending up from the base of the circular cavities. Each of these projections is in the center of the respective cavities. The space around each of these projections is equal to one-half of the required thickness of the heads and linkingeyes of the halves of the jointed mouth-piece of the bit. The grooveis equal to one-half of the required thickness and width of the month-piece. The cavities which form the linking ends of the mouth-piece are smaller than those-which form the ring-heads. A similar groove, A, cavity B and projections O O are formed in the upper half D of the die-block. F F are break-down depressions in the die-blocks. These depressions run into the ring-head cavities, but they are much shallower than said cavities. The use of these is to break down the metal for the smaller or linking head of the halves which form the mouth-piece. This saves waste of stock, and also equalizes the resistance at the two ends of the die.
To make a blank with this die, take a metal rod of proper size, and which is broader than it is thick, and place it, while hot, upon the lower die-block, and bring down. the upper die upon it until the desired form is secured. This done, the iron is, if still hot enough, passed along until the first blank produced is cleared from the die, or the portion of the bar which was broken down by the part F F comes over the cavity which forms the linkhead of the bit. Then the upper die is again brought down upon the bar, and so on until the bar requires a new heat at the forge. The blanks produced will have a thin web, cybetween the sockets Z) I), which can be punched out readily. After this web is punched out, the linking end of one of the halves of the jointed bit is turned around at right angles to the eye on the other end; and, said eye hav-- ing been split and opened, the parts are linked upon one another and the split eye closed, as shown in the perspective view of the drawings.
