Description

WITNESS: w v ATTORNEYv G. 'E. ALMQUIST FRUIT JAR RING Filed Feb. 10, 1923 4 and? Allqckuw N NTOR Patent Nov. 25, 1924 I enacnn. anmeurs'r, or-La ron'rn, rnxas.
rnurr-mn Jame l Application filed February To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GRACE E. ALM UIs'r, .a citizen of the United States, residing at La Porte, in the county of- Harris and State of Texas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fruit-Jar Rings, of which the following is a specification.
'"lhis invention relates to fruit jar rings entities for itsprimary object the provision of a ringwhich' will be strong and construction and arrangement of the lip being such as to cause uniform strains to be applied to the body of the ring whenbreaking the seal, Whereby'to prevent casual, tearing away of the lip from said body portion of the ring.
With these and other objects in view, the invention resides incertain novel construc tion and combination and arrangement of parts, essential features of which are hereinafter fully described, are particularly pointed out in the appended claim, and are illustrated in the, accompanying drawing in which a Figure 1 is a plan view of the ring r Figure 2 is a vertical section t ough a jar showing the cap sealed against the h igure 3 is a similar view demonstrating the manner of breaking thesealn in carrying the invention into practice, 1' use any suitable well-known form of preserving jar 1 having a'threaded neck 2 and a correspondingly threaded cap 3, the latter being flanged at d to co-act with a shouldcr 5 of the jar. 1 r
My: improved ring 8 is formed of elastic material and is adapted to he placed over the neck of the jar against the shoulder id, 192a Serial No. 618,353,
5so that the flange 4 of the cap 3 can be' brought into sealing contact therewith. The said ring 6 is provided-with diametrically disposed lips 7 7 which areexposed from the sides of the'shoulder 5 when the cap 3 is in its sealed or'closedposition. The an 'nular "body ofthe ring is superposed with respect to the shoulder 5 and when it is desiredto break the seal and remove the cap 3, the lips 7, 7. are uniformly pulled outward so as to remove portions offlthe annular part or body of the ring from beneath the flange t. This permits atmospheric air to enter the jar and in practice it is possible that the cap 3 can be unscrewed from the neck of the jar without the aid of cap engaging wrenches or tools. By providing lips .7, 7 diametrically positioned upon ,the ring: the saidlips are made to ,take' the pulling strains proportionally and these strains are correspondingly distributed prevents casual tearing away i of the lip from the ring as will be understood. In order to further safeguard against casual separation of the lips from the body ofthe ring I may extend flexible reinforcing strips 8 around, the lips as at 9 embedding the same thereinand passing and embedding the terminals 10 of said strips in the annular body of the ring. lhis gives reinforcement to the lips at their joinder with the annular body of the ring and at the same time does not interfere with expanding the diametrically opposite sides of the ring when breaking the scab Concavo-convex openings 11 are formed in the lips in a manner whereby the thumb or finger of the person removing the seal may be inserted therein to effect a 'firm purchase with thelips. v
The lips 7 are preferably provided with apertures llwhereby the lips may be firmly grasped when secured between the fingers when expanding the ring.
While I have described what I deem to be the most desirable embodiment of my invention, it is obvious that many of the details may be varied without in any way departing from the spiritof my invention, and I therefore do not limit myself .to the exact around the annular body of the ring. This details'of construction herein set forth nor with concavo. convex openings arranged to anything less than the whole of my intherein, and reinforcin strips associated v'ention limited only by the appended claim. with the lips and with t e annular body of 0 What is claimed asnew is the ring respectively.
l A fruit jar ring consisting ofan-annular In; testimony whereof I hereby affix my body of elastic material provided with insignature. tegral diametrically disposed'lips provided GRACE E. ALMQUIST.-
