Be-it known that we, SAMUEL KANNnu and SAMUEL JAFFE, citizens of the United States, and residents of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented con tain new and useful Improvements in Hat Pads, of \Yl'llCl'l the following is a specification.

This invention relates to hat pads and more particularly to a device of that char- :ecter shown and described in Patent No. 1,48% 585, issued to Samuel Jaffe and vSamuel Kanner on February th, 1924:, which is specially designed and intended for use in connection with ladies hats.

The recent popular vogue of wearing the hair short or bobbed made it more or less diflicult to securely retain the hat in place upon the wearers head since pins and similar fastening means could not be employed. Therefore, it is the primary object and purpose of our present invention to provide a simple and durably constructed device which may be readily applied to any rat and which will serve to securely hold the hat in place without discomfort to the wearer.

It is another object of our invention to provide a device of this character consisting of relatively few parts which may be expeditiously manufactured and assembled sothat the device can be profitably sold at relatively small cost.

With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the improved hat pad and in the form, construction and arrangement of its several parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and subsequently incorporated in the subjoined claims.

In the drawing wherein we have illustrated one simple and satisfactory embodiment of the invention and in which similar reference characters designate correspond-- ing parts throughout the several views:

Referring in detail to the drawing, we have illustrated in Figure 4; thereof by dotted lines, the marginal. or brim portion of a hat 5 of proper contour to fit upon the head of the wearer and to which our im proved pad is to be applied The pad applied and firmly fastened. or secured interiorly of the hat brim at the roar thereof in the hammer which will. be presently described.

As in the issued patent above referred to, the pad includes a stiffening member 6 of cardboard or other suitable material which gradually decreases in width or tapers from its central portion to the opposite ends thereof. Upon the front side of this stiffening member 6, cotton or. other suitable padding material. 7 is arranged and is retained in place by the flexible covering 8, said covering having a part extending over the padding material and confining the same against the face of the stiffening memberand also having a portion extending over and covering the opposite face of said stiffening member as shown at 9. These front and rear portions of the covering sheet are connected to each other by the strip of flexible material 10 which is inserted be tween the curved longitudinal edges of the covering sheet and stitched thereto as at 11.

Upon the back or rear side of the stiffening member a metallic attaching strip 12 is arranged and extends in parallel relation to one edge of said stiffening member and adjacent thereto. This attaching member is secured to the stiffening member by a plurality of metal grommets 13. As herein shown, preferably 3 of these grommets are used, the central grommet extending only through the stiffening member, the rear part 9 of the covering material and the metal strip 12. As clearly shown in Figure 8 of the drawing, the end portions of the covering material, shown at 14, are turned over the ends of the stiffening member. 6 upon the rear side thereof and between the ends of the metal strip 12 and said member. The end grommets 13 extend through the metal strip, the end portions 14 of the covering material, the stiffening member 6 and through the covering material extending over the padding 7. By thus positively securing the ends of'the flexible covering material upon the rear side of the stifi'ening ion member, the pad at its ends isreinforced and the-possibility of the stifiening member perforating the ends of the coveringsheet is obviated. 7

As in the patented construction above referred to, the metallic attaching strip 12 is provided with a plurality of spaced spurs or prongs 15 struck therefrom.

-The pad is adapted to be arranged ithin the hat and bent into curved form so that I the stiffening member is approximately con head'so 'as'to retain the hat in its adjusted position Without the use of other fastening or holding means.

From theforegoing description, the construction and several advantages of our present improvement will be readily understood. It Will, of course, be apparent that the device is susceptible of obvious modifications in the details herein referred to and We, therefore,' reserve the privilege of resortraga) all such legitimate changes in the form, proportion and relative arrangement of theseveral parts as may be fairly embodied Within the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed;

a metallic fastening element i'irranged upon the covering sheet on the latter side of the stiffening member, and a plurality of metal grommets securing said fastening element to the stiffening member, and certain of said grommets extending through the covering sheet arranged over said padding.

2. A hat pad consisting of a still'ening member having padding material arranged on one side thereof, a flexible covering shout extending over said padding material and the opposite side of said stiffening member, a metallic fastening element arranged upon the covering sheet on the latter side of the stiffening member, the end portions of said covering sheet being turned over the ends of said stiffening member upon the rear side thereof, and a plurality of metal grommets securing said fastening element to the stillening'member, and certain of said grommets extending through the latter portions of the covering sheet, through the stiffening memher and through the covering sheet extending over said padding.

3. A hat pad consisting of a stiffening member having padding material arranged on one side thereof, a flexible covering sheet extending over said padding material and the opposite side of said stiffening member, a metallic fastening member arranged on the covering sheet on the latter side of the stiffening member, and a plurality of metal securing elements passing through said fastening member and the stiffening member, and certain of said securing elements extending through the covering sheet arranged over said padding.
