Description
WW suma B. WATSON DEVICE FOR REMOVING WAX FROM ARTIFICIAL DENTURE CASTS Filed Aug. 4 1923 h I I I w mm A Immemm"; BE T/3 Wfi TJOA/ Patented New. 25,
BERTE WATSON, OF 3031 ELIZABETH, SOUTH AFRICA.
DEVICE FOR REMOVING VIAX FROM ARTIFICIAL-DENTURE CASTS.
Application filed August 4, 1923.
To aZZ to 7mm 2'2, may concern Be it known that I, Bnn'rn WATSON, a subject of the King of Great Britain, re siding at Port Elizabeth, in the Union of South Africa, have invented certain new and useful lmprovements'in Devices for Removing Fax from Artificial-Denture Casts, of which the following is a specification.
The principal object of this invention is to provide a new and improved portable device by means of which a fine jet of steam 'or superheated water may be utilized for scalding, melting, cleaning and removing wax or the like from casts such as are commonly used by dentists in the manufacture of artificial dentures and while the device as constructed is particularly devised for use by the dental profession, it may obviously be used for similar purposes in other arts.
A further object is to provide a convenient arrangement of a valve actuating handle and carrying handle by means of which the operator may operate with the fingers or thumb of the hand by which the device is, carried, a valve for permitting the escape of steam from the device.
Another object is to provide means for holding the steam escape valve in a normally closed position.
For the accomplishment of these and such further objects as will hereinafter be apparent to those skilled in the art to which this appertains, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts herein specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown a preferred embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications may be resorted to which fall within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.
In the drawings forming a portion of this specification Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a device constructed in accordance with my invention, and
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the device shown in Fig. 1..
As shown in the drawings, the device comprises a hermetically sealed kettle A, preferably constructed of sheet metal and sub stantially elliptical horizontal cross'see= tion, its top and bpttom being slightly bulged as illustrated, Y
Serial No. 655,789.
A filling plug B is provided in the top adjacent one of the side edges and an an tomatic safety or escape valve is also attached to the top at any convenient point. A handle I) of any suitable heat insulating material is secured to the top by means of the metal clips E and a jet nozzle F is sccured to one of the end walls. The nozzle F is provided with the valve plug G re tained in place by the provision of the usual spring washer and cotter pin. One end of the plug G has secured thereto one end of an operating link 5/ to the other end of which is pivoted a connecting link 7L also pivoted to an actuating lever H. The actuating lever H is pivotally mounted on a fulcrum pin K supported in a bracket L, which is preferably secured to the top of the kettle by means of the securing means for the adjacent clip E. l'he upper end of the lever H as clearly shown in the drawing extends to one side of and adjacent the handle D, and is curved into a hooked shape, its outer end being provided with a thumb piece J so that the lever and valve G may be conveniently actuated by the thumb or a finger of the hand which grasps the handle D. A torsional spring M is coiled about the pin K and acts to normally hold the lever H in elevated position with the valve Gr closed.
The operation and use of the device is as follows, the kettle being partially filled with water is set to boil by placing it upon any suitable stove or if desired an electrical heating unit may be incorporated in the structure for this purpose. When the pres sure of the steam generated by heating the water is suiiicient to actuate the safety valve 0, the device is ready for use and the operator holding the device by means of the handle D may manipulate the device so as to direct the nozzle towards the work which is to be cleaned, the operator by then press ing the thumb piece J causes the lever H and connecting linkage to open valve G and permit the escape of a fine jet of steam under pressure against the work, thereby scalding, cleaning, melting and removing the wax or the like. When the operator releases the pressure upon the thumb piece, the spring M will return the lever H to its normal upper position and thereby close the valve G. It will thus be seen that because of the ease with which the device may be manipulated that the steam jet may be directed againstt-he Workwhen and Where it is desired entirely by the hand which holds the device, thus leaving the other hand tree for the use of such other instruments as maybe desired.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim astnew and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A device for removing wax from artificial denture casts comprising a herme cally sealed kettle, said kettle provided with a filling plug and a safety valve, a jet nozzle secured to the end Wall of said kettle, and means to control the escape oi steam from said nozzle.
2. A ,deviceforremoving war from artificial denture casts comprising a hermetr cally sealed kettle, a heat insulating handle rigidly secured to the upper surface of said kettle, a jet'nozzle secured to the ,end xvall of said kettle, a rotatable valve in said nozzle, a lever pivotally mounted .on said kettle provided Wlt-ll a thumb' piece adjacent said handle to permit actuation ct said thumb piece by the lingers or thumb of the hand of the operator which engages said handle and means connecting said lever and valve.
3. A device for removing war from artiticial denture casts comprising a hermetically sealed kettle, a heat insulating handle rigidly secured to the upper surface of said kettle, a jet nozzle secured to the end wall of said kettle, a rotatable valve in said nozzle, a lever pivotally mounted on said kettle provided with a thumb piece adjacent said handle to permit actuation ot said thumb piece by the fingers or thumb of the hand. 0'? the operator which engages said handle and means connecting said lever and valve, and means to normally hold said lever in an elevated position corresponding to a closed position or said valve. 7
In testimony whereof I have alliued ]ll signature.
