To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, RALPH J. MoUL'roN, citizen of the United States, residing at lVeymouth Heights, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invent-ed certain new and useful Improvements in Door Mountings for Safes and the like, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a novel door mounting for safes and safe cabinets whereby the door may be shifted to an out of the way position, that is caused to disappear after the safe is opened for use.

In modern offices where space is at a premium, and numerous articles of office furniture are required to complete the working equipment, the door of a safe occupies other wise valuable space when it is opened to permit access to the contents of the safe. This is particularly true where large safes or safe cabinets are used because when the safe door is swung away from itsseat it either projects out into the aisle-way in front of the safe or if moved backward to a position approximately 180 from its closed position usually obstructs the entrance or prevents conven-.

ient access to other articles of furniture thereby preventing their free use and otherwise hampering otlice faclhties. Sometimes the character of the oflice business requires a battery of several safes which must be placed side by side, and the annoyance caused by one door being swung back to cover the doorway of another is a great inconvenience.

Accordingly, the present invention proposes to provide a novel door mounting or carriage whereby it is possible to shift the door rearwardly parallel to one of the sides of the cabinet after it has been-opened therei p by enabling the door to be conveniently disposed of or stored while the safe is'opened and yet at the same time being readily avail-- able for closing the safe when desired.

A further and more specific object of theinvention is to provide a simple, practical and reliable construction whereby the door may be mounted to be freely manipulated both as to opening and closing and also shifting to an out of the way position.

lVith the above and other objects in view which will more readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, com

bination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated and claimed.

A preferred and practical embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of a safe having the present invention applied thereto.

Figure 2 is a side elevation of the safe with the door open in full lines and shifted to its out of the way position in dotted lines.

Figure 3 is a top plan view of the con struction shown in Figure 2 on an enlarged scale.

According to the present invention it is proposed to equip a safe designated gen erally as S andhaving the door D, with novel carriage C which provides a combined swinging and sliding mounting for the door whereby it may be rotated on a vertical axis to permit of access to the contents of the safe, and then shifted horizontally at an angle to the plane of the opening or door-way into which the door fits when closed. This carriage is preferably arranged so that the shifting or sliding movement of the door may take place iiarallel to one of the side walls of the safe thereby to permit the door to move or retreat edgewise from its otherwise projecting relation with reference to the f: :e or front of the safe.

Nith'the arrangement above described it will be apparent that the carrier bar l is suspended from the track 9 by the hanger and rollers and therefore may be freely shifted along the channels G thereof. And, for the purpose of steadying the carrier bar as it is shifted parallel to the side wall of the cabinet the lower end 12 thereof may be provided with keeper projection 1-3 adapted to slidably engage with the side Walls 1.4: of the slot '01- guide-way formed in a lower track member 15. This track member 15 may, like the upper track member 9 be secured to the cabinet with the aid of the supporting plate 16 and filler or shim 17 thereby to provide suliicient clearance to compensate for the thickness of the door D when the same is shifted so that it will not interfore with the side wall of the cabinet,

Also, to prevent the ca-nti-ng or skewing of the carrier bar 4: under the weight of the door when it is opened and shifted rearwardly along the side of the cabinet, the lower frontedge of the door may be provided with a swivelled supporting caster 18 secured to the door by the strap 19 or its equivalent. This caster continuously bears on the floor or other support upon which the safe rests and relieves the strain which would otherwise be imposed on the hinges as well as the carrier bar due to the weight of the door when it is manipulated away from thedoor-frame.

From the foregoing it is thought that the features and advantages of the present improvement will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art, and while the present drawings and descriotion refer to a simple and practical embodiment of the invention, it will of course be understood that the primary and underlying feature of providing a disappearing doorf0r a safe or safe cabi net may be embodied in different structural forms without departing from the spirit of the invention or scope of the appended claims,

I claim:

2. A disappearing safe door mounting for fire-proof safes including the safe body having a front door opening and provided at one side, outside of its inner compartment, with upper and lower fined guide members in substantially the same vertical plane, an upright carrier member having at its lower end a slidable holding and guiding engagement with the lower guide member and provided at its upper end with a load-sustaining traveller having a supporting and traveling engagement with the upper guide member, and the safe door carrying hinges mounted on said upright carrier member.

3. A disappearing safe door mounting for lire-proof safes including the safe body provided exterior-1y of one side of its inner compartment withan upper track member and with a lower guideway, an upright carrier post having a. slidable holding and guiding engagement with the lower guideway, a suspension hanger supported and having a traveling engagement with the upper track, said hanger" having the upper end of the carrier pest connected therewith whereby the load'assumed by the carrier post is transfererd to the hanger, and the door having its hinges secured to the carrier post.
