Be it known that I, ERNEST E. 71st, a citizen ot the United States, residing at Omaha, in the county ot Douglas and State of Nebraska, have invented 'certain new and useful improvements in a Measuring and Dispensing l'nstri'unent, ot' which the following is a specilication.
rlhis invention relates to a measuring and dispensing` device particularly useful in the practice of dentistry, and has for its object to provide an instrument which will consist of few and simple parts, will be convenient in use and may be readily adjusted for dis-- 'pensing ingredients Yin greater or lesser quantities, said ingredients when dispensed being uniform in pro-portions.
lVith the 'toregoingobjects in view the invention presents a novel and useful const-ruction, combination and arrangement ot' parts as described herein and claimed, and as illustrated in the accompanying drawing, it being understood that changes in torni, size, proportion and minor details may be urade, as found to be of advantage, said changes to be determined by the scope ot the invention as claimed. y

rlhe screw-rod is disposed in the apertures ot the cylindrical sections, the sections 15 and 1G being adapted to have a limited longitudinal movement in the casing when the rod 17, by use ot the disc, is rotated, parts ot said sections 15 and 16 being interior-ly threaded to be engaged by the threaded parts 0l and c ci the screw-rod, as shown in the drawing, and it will be understood that since the screw-rod is provided with detents or collars 19 and 2O which are disposed in the ends oft the section 13, said section 13 will be prevented trom moving longitudinally of said rod when the latter is rotated, and the section 14e will be prevented from such longitudinal niovement since the rod is provided with a. detent or collar 21 and a proiection said collars 21, 19 and 2O bee ing disposed in trieplanes ot the, sections and not operating to prevent a free rotation oi said rod.

As iirst stated., thc instrument is particularly of advantage for the use' of dentists when measuring ingredients in the Ytorination of alloys of mercury with certain kinds of metals, the alloy being hard or so'l't according to the proportion ot mercury used; and by use of the device the ingredients will not become wasted, as they Otten are by assuming and using improper proportions7 the use of the device also operating as a saving of time ott an operatcr.
In operation, the parts being disposed as shown in Fig. 7. the volume of the chambers may be reduced by rotating the screw-rod and its disc. -so that said chambers will each contain a limited quantity of the ingredients, the receptacle ll being adapted to contain mercury and the receptacle lO being adapted to contain another metal or metals in powdered form, such as silverI or the like. Y The plunger l2 may then be drawn outwardly to permitthe chambezs 28 and 29 to communicate with the exits a and b of the respective receptacles 10 and 1l, said chamber 29 beilled with mercury and the chamber 2K8 V,being filled with said other metal or amalgam.
The operator then permits the plunger to slide inwardly of the casing by operation of the spring, the mercury being moved and discharged `in the spillway 24 before the amalgam in chamber 28 is discharged in the spillwayV 23, the ingredients which will be relceived in the container 30, by the operation described, being of suitable proportions for v` jthe reason that the volumes or containing capacity forl the chambers 28 and 29 had been predetermined.
Tt will be understood, of course, that the degree of inclination tor the threads or the parts cl and c of the screw-rod 17 will determineY the proportion of parts for the alloy, the volumes tor the respective chambers 28 and 29 being valso arranged, the proportions for the ingredients dispensed being the same whether a large or very limited supply is re.-
uired. However. it is sometimes-desired to` add an additional quantity of mercury to the alloy, and since the distance between the port 24; and the port Z is less than the distance between the port 23 and the port a, an additional quantity of mercury maybe delivered lto the container 30 trom the receptacle ll without the delivery thereto of any ot the contents of the receptacle 10, and it will be `seen thatin Vsuch an instance the delivery ot sfu'ch uuantity of'mercury may be under control often operator by rotating the screw-rod.
