To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, SALVATORE PANASHE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Waterbury, county of New Haven, and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dra-wbench Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to draw benches,
bench attachment of the above nature hav'-, ing means carried by an oppositely driven auxiliary endless chain for engaging the drawing carriage and returning it to starting position.
A further object is to provide a mechanism of the above nature which will be simple, cheap to manufacture, easy to install, and very efficient and durable in use.
With these and other objects in view, there have been illustrated on the accompanying drawings one form in which the invention may be conveniently embodied in practice. Y

eferring -now to the drawings in which like reference numerals denote corresponding parts thro-ughout the several views, the draw bench comprises a pair of side frames 10 and 11, a bottom frame 1,2, and a pair of end frames 13 and 14, the draw bench being supported upon a series of legs 15,' 16, as'clearly shown in Fig. 1. A pair 'of parallel rails 17 and 18 are provided upon the top of the side frames 10 and 11 for supporting the drawing carriage, to be hereinafter described. Journaled in the draw bench at the rear and .front thereof are a pair of horizontal shafts 19 and 2O respectively, the shaft 19 being provided with an extension 19a carrying a driving gear 21 adapted to receive power from a motor not shown. The s11afts19 and 20 are held against longitudinal sliding in their bearings by means of collars 22 preferably held in place'on said shafts by set screws, said collars being located just outside of the side frames 10 and 11. The shafts 19 and 20 are provided with sprocket wheels 23 and 25 located midway between said side frames, and connected byA an endless sprocket chain 24.
In order to permit the carriage to be returned to starting position, a pair of auxiliary sprocket wheels 26 and 27 are journaled in U-shaped brackets 28 and 29 secured to the side frame 11 by screw bolts 30.
The sprocket wheels 23 and 25 are adapted to be driven in a counter clockwise direction by the motor mentioned above. The sprocket wheels 26 and 27, however, are caused to rotate in a clockwise direction by means of a pair of intermeshi'ng gears 31 and 32, the gear 31 being mounted on an extension of the forward shaft 20, While the gear 32 is rigidly mounted on a bushing 33 surrounding a shaft 33a carried by the U- shaped bracket 29. The sprocket wheel 27 which is loosely mounted upon the bushing 33 is provided on its outer face with a series of equally spaced sockets 37 adapted to be engaged by a pin 34 secured to the inner face of a sliding clutch plate 35, and adapted to slide within a guiding hole 35 on an intermediate disk 35b rigidly secured to the bushing 33. The clutch plate 35 is loosely mounted upon the bushing 33 and is normally pressed against the free arm of the U-shaped bracket 29 by a coiled spring 36, whereby the sprocket wheel 27 will be caused to rotate with the gear 32 whenever desired.
A clutch yoke 38 is pivoted Within a reduced section of the clutch plate 35 by means of pinsy39 and 40. The yoke 38 extends downwardly to form a bell-crank lever 41 which is fulcrumed at 42 and has a short arm 43. A link 44 connects the arm 43 to a clutch-operating lever 45 pivoted at 46 to a projection of the bracket 29 and having a foot-engaging treadle 47 at its outer end.
The drawing carriage comprises a sheet metal platform bent into the shape of a U, and having a base 48 and side walls 49 and 50. The base 48 is provided with a rear slot 51, and the side wall 50 has a vertical slot 52 for purposes to be hereinafter described. The drawing carriage is supported by four -ilanged wheels 53, 54, adapted to roll upon the rails 17 l and 18, and journaled within the side walls 49 and 50. In order to grip the tube or rod to be drawn, the carriage is provided with tongs comprising a pair of jaws 55 and 56, p-ivoted together and to the base 48 by a vertical pin 57. The jaws 55 and 56 are also connected at their rear ends to a pair of arms 58 andl 59, said arms being pivoted together and to a rearwardly extendin slide 67 by a pin 60. A vertical post 61 having parallel arms 61 and 61b is mounted on the base 48 in the open space between the jaws 55 and 56 and the arms 58, 59. A lever 62 is pivoted between said parallel arms 61a and 61b near the top thereof, and is provided with an upwardly extendin angle-shaped handle, and a rearwardly and ownwardly extending metal strip 63, as more clearly shownI in Fig. 8. The metal strip 63 is adapted to be engaged by a roller 64 mounted on the upper end of an L-shaped arm 65' of a lever 66, said arm being connected to the vertical arms 61a and 61b by a spiral spring 66th The lever 66 which is adapted to extend downwardly through the slot 51 of the base 48, is pivoted to the slide 67 mounted on saidi base. The lever 66 is provided with a second arm 68 terminating in a hook 69 and adapted to engage within any one of the links of the chain 24 whenthe handle 62 is rocked forwardly by the operator. After the hook 69 has been engaged with the chain, the tension of the rod being drawn will tend to keep the hook in engagement with the chain until the drawing has been completed, at which time the tension of the spring 66a will cause the hook 69 to automatically move upwardly out of engagement with the chain.
In order to return the carriageto its forward position, a transverse sheet metal stop member 70 is pivoted to the outside of the side wall 49 and extends through the vertical slot 52, said stop member being cut away at its inner section so as not to interfere with the spring 66a. The stop member 70 is normally held in a horizontal position as shown in full lines in Fig. 2, by means of the metal strip 63 on the lever 62. A coiled compression spring 71 which is housed in a tube 72 presses against the bottom of said stop member and causes it tobe elevated whenever the lever 68 is hooked into the drawing chain. This will prevent the stop from engaging with the lugs 73-now to be described-of the auxiliary chain during the drawing operation. The side chain 27*i is provided at spaced intervals with special links having upwardly extending lugs 73 formed integral with one side thereof. When the clutch has been operated to return the `carriage to fits forward position, the auxiliary chain 27a will rotate in a clockwise direction and one of the lugs 73 will engage the rear of the stop 7() and move the carriage along with it.
While there has been disclosed in this specification, one form in which the invention may be embodied, it is to be understood that thisform is shown for the purpose of illustration only, and that the invention is not to be limited to the specific form, but may be modified and embodied in various other forms without departing from its spirit. In short, the invention includes all the modifications and embodiment coming within the scope of the following claims.
Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed as new, and for which it is desired to secure Letters Patent, is:
1. In a draw bench, a frame, a drawing carriage adapted to move along said frame, a pair of sprocket wheels mounted to rotate in said frame, a sprocket chain on said sprocket wheels, means to drive said chain in one direction, means on said drawing carriage adapted to be'connected to any one of the links of said sprocket chain whereby the carriage will be drawn along with said chain, a gear rigidly connected to one of said sprocket wheels to rotate therewith, a second gear meshing with said first gear to rotate in the reverse direction, an. auxil* iary sprocket wheel adjacent said second gear and normally motionless, a clutch for connecting said auxiliary sprocket wheel to said second gear, an auxiliary sprocket chain driven by said -auxiliary sprocket wheel in the opposite direction from which the main sprocket chain is driven, and means on said carriage for engaging said auxiliary sprocket chain torj cause the carriage to be returned to starting position, said means being inoperative when the work to be drawn is connected to said carriage.

3. In a draw bench, a frame, an endless chain mounted to travel in said frame, a carriage movable upon said frame, a chainengaging hook-lever pivoted to said oarriage, means on said carriage adapted to grip the work to be drawn, and ahand lever having al resilient arm adapted to engage said chain-engaging lever to force the hook thereof into one of the links of said chain.
4. In a draw bench, a frame, an endless chain mounted to travel in said frame, a carriage movable upon said frame, a chainengaging hook-lever pivoted to said carriage, means on said carriage. adapted to grip the work to be drawn, and a hand lever having a resilient arm adapted to engage said chain-engaging lever to foroe the hook e thereof into one of the links of said chain,
and a stop on said carriage adapted to be engaged 'by mechanism for returning said carriage to starting position.
5. In a drawv bench, a drawing carriage mounted thereon, a main driving chain for moving said carriage in one direction for the drawing operatlon, an auxiliary chain for moving said carriage back to its original position, direction reversing mechanism for connecting said main chain with said auxiliary chain, a clutch for releasing said con` nection, said carriage having a depending lug adapted to engage said auxiliary chain, said lug bein raised out of engaging position during t e drawing operatie 6.
