IMPROVEMENT IN MILK-CAN ADJUSTABLE LOCKING ATTACHMENTS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 151,661, dated June 2, 1874; application filed April 16, 1874.

To all lwhom 'it may concern.'

Be it known that I, FRANCIS L. HATCH, of the city of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a certain new and Improved Adjustable Locking Attachment for the Covers of Milk-Cans; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this specication.

The object of this invention is to provide a simple adjustable locking attachment for securing the ordinary taper-rim covers into the necks or breasts of milk-cans, to prevent waste of milk in careless handling, as well as theftof the same during transportation. To such end my present invention consists in the combination, with the neck and cover of a milkcan, of a bolt provided at one end with a screw-threaded shank Iittiug into a female screw-socket or nut, and at the other end with a attened or other suitable head passing through the cover of the can, and provided with an eye for receiving the hasp or latch of a padlock, whereby I produce an adjustable locking attachment which may be regulated, as desired, to compensate for the wearing of the rim or neck of the can, and the cover be thereby securely and tightly held in place and locked, however slight and gradual may be the wear of the parts.

In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a central vertical section of the neck, cover, breast, and upper portion of the body of a milkcan, showing my invention applied thereto 5 and Fig. 2 is a plan or top view of the same.

A designates the breast of the can, and it is secured to the body A in the usual or any suitable manner. B is the neck, and C the bowl. E is the cover surmountinga rim, D, which decreases in diameter from the cover downward, so that the harder it is crowded down in the can the tighter becomes the joint. Gis a screw-'threaded nut, which is secured by soldering, riveting, or in any other suitable manner, to the neck or breast of the can. In the present instance it is secured to the neck B just below the bowl C. H is a bolt, which has a screw-threaded shank, b, which latter ts into the nut G. This shank b preferably passes through the nut Gr, and has its end hammered, or is otherwise provided with an enlarged end, to prevent disengagement from the nut. The said bolt H passes up through the tlange of the bowl C, and it is provided at its upper end with a head, a, which is hattened or otherwise suitably shaped to prevent thebolt from being turned after having entered a correspondinglyshaped opening, I, in the iiange d of the cover. The said head a of the bolt H is provided with a hole, @,which, when the bolt is properly adjusted with respect to the cover, will be above the flange d of the cover D E, so as to receive the hasp or bolt of a padlock, J, or other locking device, for preventing the cover being removed or even raised, as will be understood by reference to Fig. 2.

As the inside of the neck of the can or rim of the cover wears, and the latter sinks or wedges down further into the neck, the bolt H may be adjusted in the nut G so that the hole c in its head will be just outside the cover, and therefore the bottom hasp of the padlock or other locking device will always bear on the cover, and hold it securely in place.

By my present invention I produce a simple, cheap, and reliable adjustable locking attachment for the covers of milk-cans.

What I' claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

rEhe combinat'on, with the neck and cover of a millecan, of a lug, G,and a bolt, H, the latter being provided with a screwshank, b, entering said nut, and with a suitably-shaped head, a, passing through a corresponding hole in the rim of the cover, the said head being provided with an eye, c, for receiving the hasp or bolt of a padlock or other lock, substantially as and for the purpose herein speciiied.
