A. MQKELLAR NECK YOKE ATTACHMENT FOR TONGUE-5 Filed July 28. 1922 Patented Nov. 18, 1924.

NECK-YOKE ATTACHMENT FOR TONGUES.
Application filed July 28, 1922. Serial No. 578,164.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that ARoHIE MoKnLLAR, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at WVausau, in the county of Marathon and State of Wisconsin, has invented new and useful Improvements in Neck- Yoke Attachments for Tongues, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple detachable connection between a neck yoke and a draft tongue whereby the disengagement of the team from the tongue as for example in changing from one vehicle or machine to another may be effected without necessitating the movement of the driver to the head of the team or the front end of the pole; and with this object in view the invention consists in a construction and combination of parts of which a preferred embodiment is shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure l is a perspective view of a hitching or neck yoke attaching means constructed in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is a sectional View of the same.
In the illustrated embodiment of the invention the tongue or pole 10 is provided at its front end with a key 11 removably fitted in a vertical seat 12 formed in a metallic pole head 13 designed for engagement of the neck yoke ring 14:. The neck yoke 16 is flexibly connected with the ring 14: by means of links 15 or the equivalent thereof and the key for convenience in operation is preferably suspended from the neck yoke by means of a chain 17 or its equivalent'so that when the neck yoke is disconnected 4 from the pole by the disengagement of the ring 14 therefrom, the key is carried by the neck yoke for use in connection with the pulling of another vehicle, and is not subject to loss or displacement during the shifting of the team from one vehicle to another.
The pole or tongue head is provided with aseat 18 for the neck ring 14 and the key 11 is arranged in front of said seat so that when the key is in its seat 12 it serves to lock the neck yoke ring in place whereas upon withdrawal of the key it is possible to slip the neck yoke ring freely over the front end of the tongue head in making the transfer of a team to another vehicle.
For normally locking the key in its place in the seat 12 a spring 19 is arranged in the seat, but the retaining force of this spring is not suflicient to resist strain applied by the operator upon an actuating cord 20 extending through a guide 21 on the neck yoke and terminally attached to the key, so that when it is desired to shift the team it is only necessary for the operator to draw with sufficient force upon the cord 20 which extends to within convenient reach of the drivers seat, in order to enable him to drive the team clear of the vehicle in connection with which it has been operating and transfer it to another vehicle.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new and useful is 1. A neck yoke attachment for vehicle tongues having a neck yoke carried ring for engagement with the tongue end, a key carried by the tongue in advance of said ring for normally holding the same in engaging relation with the tongue, and an operating cord extending from the key to the drivers station for displacing the key to permit of the disengagement of the neck yoke ring from the tongue.
2. A neck yoke attachment for vehicle tongues having a neck yoke carried ring for engagement with the tongue end, a key carried by the tongue in advance of said ring for normally holding the same in engaging relation with the tongue, and an operating cord extending from the key to the drivers station for displacing the key to permit of the disengagement of the neck yoke ring from the tongue, the neck yoke ring being flexibly connected with the neck yoke and a guide being provided on the neck yoke for directing the operating cord.
3. The combination with a draft tongue and a neck yoke having a ring for engagement with a tongue of a key removably fitted in a seat in the tongue for locking said ring in engagement with the tongue, and means including operating cords connected with said key and extending through a guide on the neck yoke for withdrawing the key to permit of the release of the neck yoke ring.
4:. The combination with a draft tongue and a neck yoke having a ring for engagement with a tongue of a key removably fitted in a seat in the tongue for locking said ring in engagement with the tongue, and means including operating cords connected with said key and extending through a guide on the neck yoke for withdrawing the key to permit of the release of the neck yoke ring, said key being flexibly connected with and carried by the neck yoke.
5. The combination with a draft tongue and a neck yoke having a ring for engagement with a tongue of a, key removably fitted in a seat in the tongue for locking said ring in engagement With the tongue, and means including operating cords connected with said key and extending through a guide on the neck yoke for Withdrawing the key to permit of the release of the neck yoke ring, a locking spring being provided to secure 10 said key in its operative position.
In testimony whereof he aflixes his signature.
ARCHIE MQKELLAR.
