SNOW REMOVER.

Application filed November 30, 1923.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM P. CUM- MINGS, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Long Island City, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Snow Remover, of which the following is a description.

My invention'relates to a means for removing snow, and the general object of the invention is to provide a snow remover to be effective when presented to a heap of snow in melting a zone at the base of the heap as the snow remover is moved forward, whereby the snow remover will be caused to pass beneath the heaped snow and the latter caused to move along the snow remover to a position to be hauled or to pass onto a trailer.

The nature of the invention and its distinguishing features and advantages will more clearly appear as the description proceeds.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, it being understood that the 'drawings are merely illustrative of one example of the invention.

Figure 1 is a vertical section of a snow remover embodying my invention;

Figure 2 is a plan view with parts broken out' Figure 3 is a detail in vertical section showing a modification of the form of runner employed for mounting the platform.

In carrying out my invention in accordance with the illustrated example a platform 10 is provided having the front portion 11 thereof in the form of an incline to constitute a ramp. The platform 10 is supported on runners 12, two of which are shown. Beneath the platform 10 is disposed a transverse oil pipe 13 having nozzles 14 extending forwardly beneath the ramp 11. The pipe 13 is adapted to receive suitable fluid fuel from an elevated tank or tanks 15. I have shown two fuel tanks 15 supported on the platform 10 adjacent the sides thereof by frames 16. An oil supply pipe 17 extends from each tank 15 to a connection with the pipe 13 and provided with a regulating valve 18.

will pass into the burners 20 about the fuel nozzles 14 i mixing with the fuel, and the mixture of air and fuel will issue from burners 20 producing an effective flame.

In practice the front presented to a heap of snow at the base of the latter so that the flames from burners 20 will be caused to melt the snow in advance of the ramp 11 and runners 12.

Below the burners 20 I provide a guard plate 120 which in practice is elevated above the ground about four inches. The guard plate protects asphalt and like pavements from being injured by the heat of the burners, and it serves to maintain a mat lifi end of ramp ll is of snow below the burners to assist in protecting the pavement. The arrangement is such that the burners 20 are disposed be neath the ramp'll and above the guard plate 120, the runners serving to sustain the plate 120 the required distance above the surface of the pavement.

I provide means to cause the runners 12 and ramp 11 to forcibly enter the melted zone at the base of the heap of snow so that the heap passes onto theramp 11 and thence rearwardly along the platform 10. In the illustrated example draft chains 21 are shown which are connected to the platform 10 at the sides, outside of the ramp 11 by any suitable means such as plates 22 havthe rear ends of the chains 21 are engaged. The chains 21 may be hauled by an automobile or by draft animals.

In connection with the platform 10 and runners 12 I provide atrailer consisting of a platform 23 on runners 24, the runners being connected in practice to the runners 12 by any suitable means such as links 25 engaging at their respective ends the

The space between the front of the trailer platform 23 and the front platform 10 is bridged by a transversely disposed sheet metal strip 30 hcreshown as formed with pass beneath the front being 111 the form of a ramp,

knuckles 31, there being a knuckle 32 on the platform 10 and a pin 33 passing through the respective knuckles.

The box 19 constituting the air duct adapted in practice to be connected with any convenient source of air under pressure, said box being shown with a nipple 2S having a valve 29 to regulate or cut off the air supply.

With the trailer coupled by the links 25 to the platform 10, the heap of snow will be caused to ride over the platform 10 and the strip 30 onto the trailer platform \Vith a load on the trailer platform 23, the snow remover maybe hauled to any desired point of delivery, or the links 25 may be disconnected and the trailer drawn to any desired point of delivery. Instead of plain runners 24: wheels may be provided on the main runners and the trailer runners as shown in Figure 3 in which the trailer platform 123 is shown on runners 12 i havingwheels 224.

I would state in conclusion that while the illustrated example constitutes a practical embodiment of my invention, 1 no not limit myself strictly to the exact details herein illustrated, since, manifestly, the same can be considerably varied without departure from the spirit of the invention as defined in the appended claims.

.Having thus described my invention, 1 claim:

1. A snow remover including a platform, means mounting the platform to adapt it for forward movement to enter the platform beneath a snow heap, the front end of said platform being in the form of a ramp, and burner means beneath the platform and forwardly disposed in position to direct the flame beyond the front of the ramp to melt a zone ofthe snow heap at the base thereof to facilitate the movement of the platform beueath the snow heap.

2. Arsnow remover including a platform, means mounting said platform and adapted to be moved forwardly for entrance beneath a snow heap, and a fuel supply pipe disposed transversely beneath the platform, burners in front of said fuel pipe, nozzles on the fuel pipe and entering said burners, and an air duct disposed beneath the platform and in communication with the several burners.

A. snow remover including a platform, means mounting the platform to adapt it to a snow heap, said platform at burner means positioned to melt a zone of snow at the base of the snow heap in front of the ramp to facilitate the entrance of the platform, and draft means connecting with said platform at the sides thereof outside of said ramp.

A snow remover including a platform adapted to be passed beneath a snow heap, means mounting said platform and adapted to travel on the ground, burner means heneath the platform, said burner means including forwardly directed burner nozzles to melt a zone at the base of the snow heap to facilitate the entrance of the platform, hauling means to give forward movement to the platform, a trailer platform, supporting means for the trailer platform, means connecting the trailer supporting means with the supporting means of the first-mentioned platform, and a bridge piece extending across the space between the first-mentioned plat- 7 form and the trailer platform.

5. A snow remover including a platform adapted to be passed beneath ,a snow heap, means mounting said platform and adapted to travel on the ground, burner means beneath the platform, said burner means including forwardly directed burner nozzles to melt a zone at the base of the snow heap to facilitate the entrance of the platform, hauling means to give forward movement to the platform, a trailer platform, supporting means for the trailer platform, means connecting the trailer supporting means'with. the supporting means of the first-mentioned platform, and a bridge piece extendingacross the space bet-ween the first-mentioned platform and the trailer platform, said bridge piece hinged one edge adjacent to the rear edge of the first-mentioned platform.

6. it snow remover including a platform, means supporting said platform to facilitate the hauling thereof, a ramp on the platform at the front end, hauling means connected with the platform at each side outside of the ramp, burners beneath the platform and vhaving burner nozzles extending forwardly beneath said ramp in position to melt the snow in front of the ramp, elevated fuel supply tanks, means supporting said tanks on the platform at each side of the latter adjacent the hauling means, and means to supply oil from said tanks to said burner nozzles.

7. A snow remover including a platform, means mounting the platform to adapt it for forward movement beneath a snow heap, and heater means beneath the platform at the front adapted to circct heat in a forward direction for meltinga zone of snow at the base of the snow heap in front of the plat form to facilitate the entrance of the platform beneath the heap.

8. A snow remover including a. platform, means mounting the platform to adapt it for forward movement to enter the platform beneath a snou heap, the frontend of said platform being in the form of a ramp. and burner means beneath the platform and forwardly disposed to melt a zone of the snow heap at the case thereof to facilitate the movement of snow heap, together with a guard plate be the platform beneath the v neath the burner means and elevated to be spaced from the ground surface a suflicient distance to leave a mat of snow unmelted by the burner means.
