IMPROVEMENT IN LOCKING-LATCHES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 151,525, dated June 2, 1874; application tiled April 22, 1874.
To all whom it may concern.:
Be it known that I, ROBERT B. WARNER,
N o. 21S North Second street, Brooklyn, East Division, in the county ot' Kin gs and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Loeking-Iiatches i'or Doors and other purposes; and the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making a part ot' this specilication, in which is represented a front view ot' the Working mechanism ot my locking-latch.
My invention relates to door and cupboard lritches, which may be locked to prevent un'- a ithorized persons from entering or having a cess to the inclosure.
My improvement consists in the movable g-segment Weight, as constructed and arrlanged to operate in rcombination With a se- ,ies of sliding cogged bolts, having notches t ierein, and intermediate stationary wardp es, and a Weighted lever and arm, to which the latclrbolt is attached, working by its own gravity, entirely dispensing withsprings ot' any kind.
To enable others to make and use my improved locking-latch, -I will describe it more in detail, referring to the drawing and the letters marked thereon.
rIhe frame or box A, to which the parts are attached, and in which they are incased, may be made ot' Wrought or cast metal, the same as other ordinary mortise -locks, the cap-plate being held' in its place by a single screw, tting the post or stud o, on which the cogged Weight B is placed and held, the weight B having an oblong opening through it, so as to permit it to move up and down on the stud T, and also laterally at the same time, by the action of the vseries of sliding bolts C, which are provided With cogs 0 o to lit the cogs in the Weight B, and also a projecting prong, d,
that lits into a notch, c, in the Weighted lever E, and form s a lock to hold it from moving While the sliding bolts C are moved to the right. When the sliding bolts O are moved to the left by the action of the key the Weighted lever E is released, and free to nieve or be lifted by the action ofthe door-knob orhandle, and at the same time withdraw the sliding latch, which is attached to a right-angled arm, F, on the upper portion of the lever E, and moves With the raising ot the said lever. The sliding bolts O are provided with openings through them, and notches h that engage with the pin t, which is attached to the ease, and passes through the bolts and the intermediate stationary Wardplates l), so that the lock is exceedingly dit'li cult to pick, although it is very simple and cheap in its construction, and of but few parts. The series ot' sliding bolts O and stationary Ward -plates I) are susceptible of as many changes and as much variation as any doorlock having the same number of pieces.

\Vhat I do claim as my improvement, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
'Ihe movable cog-segment weight B, in combination with the series ol' sliding cogged bolts C, having notches h, the intermediate stationary ward-plates l), the Weighted lever E, provided with a notch, c, into which the projecting prongs (l enter to lock the same, the arm F, and latch-bolt II, all operating in the manner substantially as herein shown and described.
