Be it known that I, WILLIAM L. Jones, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Fixtures, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to electrical fixtures and has for its primary object, to provide an electrical fixture in which the lamp socket shall be adjustable longitudinally of the fixture, thus permitting various depth globes, or various size lamps to be used in connection with the fixture and always retain the lamp filament in proper relation with the globe.
Another object is to provide a fixture of this character which shall be simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, and which may be easily and quickly adjusted.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the various novel features of construction and arrangement or' combination, all of which will be fully described hereinafter and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawing wherein I have shown certain forms of my invention, Fig. 1 is a vertical sectional view of a ceiling type of fixture embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is an elevation, with parts broken away, showing my invention embodied in a pendant type of fixture; Fig. 3 is an enlarged detailed elevation with parts broken away to show the adjustable socket holder within the fixture, and Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 44 of Fig. 1.
Describing the various parts by reference characters, 1 indicates generally a ceiling type of fixture which is composed of upper and lower members 2 and 3 respectively. These members are formed from sheet metal and are secured together by a roll oint indicated at 4. Interposed between these memhere at the roll. joint is a sheet metal socket holder 5 which is provided with an inverted L slot 6 on oppositely disposed sides thereof. This socket holder is adapted to receive a lamp socket 7 which is fitted with an insulating bushing8 and in practice I interpose a metal ring 9, having oppositely projecting cars 10, between said socket and bushing. The cars 10 are adapted to project into the slots 6 when the lamp socket is positioned in the socket holder.
In operation an electric lamp 11 is positioned in the socket 7 and a globe 12 is supported by the lower fixture member 3. I/Vhen a globe such as shown in full lines in Fig. 1 is used, the lamp socket and lamp are positioned in the socket holder so that the cars 10 will rest at the lower end of the inverted L slots 6 and thus position the lamp in proper relation to the globe to secure the desired illumination. If it is desired to use a globe 14 such as indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 1, which is of less depth than globe 12, then the lamp and socket therefor may be raised to bring the lamp in the same relative position with respect to globe 14 as previously existed with globe 12. This is accomplished by pushing upwardly on the lamp 11 until the ears 10 reach the lateral portion of the slots 6 whereupon a slight turn of the lamp toward the right will position the ears in the upper vertical position 15 of the slots 6. The lamp and socket therefor will now assume a position as indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 1 and the proper relation with respect to globe 14 will be obtained.
In Fig. 2 I have shown a lamp socket 16 and socket holder 17 embodied in a sheet metal fixture member 18 which is supported by a chain 19. The operation of this type fixture is similar to that previously described in connection with the ceiling typ of fixture.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. The combination with an electrical fixture, of a socket holder positioned within said fixture, said holder being formed with a pair of oppositely disposed inverted L- shaped slots, a two part lamp socket positioned within said holder, and a ring clamped between the parts of said socket,
said ring being provided with ears adjust- L-shaped slots closed at each end, a two part lamp socket positioned Within said holder, and a ring clamped between the parts of said socket, said ring being provided with a pair of laterally and oppositely disposed ears engaged in said slots, said ears being adapted to engage the bottom of said slots 01' the horizontal portion of said slots thereby to provide two adjustments of said lzunp socket with respect to said fixture. 1O
