Be it known that I, HARRY A.. Davis, al citizen of the United States, and a resident of I-Iopedale,.county of Worcester, State of lllassachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Thread-Cutting Temples for Looms,
j of whicli-the following description, in con- This invention relates to improvements' in thread cutting temples for looms and the object of the invention is to provide a construction which shall securean effective co-l operation between the movable cutter member and the fixed cutter member.
The object of the invention is further to provide a construction which shall minimize the wear of the cutter members and prevent any wear that does take place from disturbing the accurate and effective character of the cutting operation.
The object of the invention is further to provide and maintain co-operating flat guiding surfaces between the movable cutter member and the temple body throughout the movements of the cutter member.
These and other objects and features of the invention will appear more fully from the accompanying description and drawings and will be particularly pointed out in the claims.

The general construction and operation of a loom temple and temple thread cutterl are so well known and familiar to those skilled in the weaving art that it is only necessary to describe and illustrate those' features with which the present inventionI is vparticularly concerned. Y
The type of thread cutting temple herein illustrated is that shown in .the patent to E. S. Stimpson No. 1,366,034, granted January 18, 1921, but the invention'is applicable to other types of temples.

The temple head is provided with a slot extending fore and aft adjacent the end of the toothed roll l to provide for the cutting mechanism. l In the present invention one important feature consists in that the wall 7 of this slotwhich is further from the roll 4; .is formed flat throughout its length in order to form a flat guide and accurate bearing for the movable cutter member.
The cutting mechanism comprises as usual two elements, viz, a movable cutter member moved forwardly by the lay and rearward-. ly by' a spring and a relatively fixed cutter member with which the movable member cooperates in severing the filling.
The movable cutter member is conveniently formed throughout of cast iron as a single casting and provided with a chilled rearward end upon which is formed the cutting edge as disclosed in the said patent to Stimpson. As illustrated, this movable cutter member presents the usual body portion 8 presenting at the rear end the chilled portion of hook shape provided with an inclined cutting edge 9 and the usual depending tail 10 at the forward end. The usual spring 11 coiled about the stud 12 on the temple bar` and about the stud 13 on tail 10 acts to project the movable cutter member rearwardly.
An yimportant feature of the present invention consists in that the body of this movable cutter member presents throughout afflat side, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, which bears throughout against the fiat wall 7 of the slot in the temple head. In the construction illustrated only the extreme rearward end ofthe movable cutter member is relieved at 141 to prevent the filling from being` pinched as the cutter member is moved forwardly. It ywill`thus be yseen that with the movable cutter member bearing against the ilaty wall` accurate guiding surfaces are to form a substantial cylindrical bearing 16. This cutter blade is mounted in the temple head at the front end of the slot and at or adjacent the wall 17 nearer the roll. It is also so mounted as to enable it to press yieldingly against the movable cutter member. This is secured by pivoting the blade at its upper end and pressing it by a spring in the direction of the movable cutter member.
In the construction illustrated a shouldered bearing screw 18 is mounted in a recess in the temple head above the slot and the cylindrical bearing 16 of the vertical blade is journaled on this screw. rllhis allows a slight pivoting or swinging of the vertical blade toward and from the movable cutter member. lThe temple head is drilled in transversely to form a cylindrical seat or socket 19 .in the podand in this socket is seated a `helical spring 2O which thus abuts against the vertical cutter blade and causes it to press yieldingly against the movable cutter member. ,The eXte-nt of this yielding pressure may be varied by varying the tension or the length of the kspring 20.
The face of the rearward end of the movable cutter member upon which is for-med the cutting edge 9 is preferably slightly inclined iin `the aforesaid Stimpson patent and the cutting edge co-operates with -th-e edge or corner 21 of the vertical blade 15.
The movable cutter member, it will be remembered, is actuated at each beat up of the lay because each time the lay beats up it strikes against the depending heel 10 of the movable cutter member and carries the movable cutter member forwardly against the tension ofthe spring 11. As the lay retracts the spring 11 forces the movable cutter' member rearwardly. The movement thus imparted to the movable critter member is a combined backward and forward and rocking movement.
lVith the constructionof ythis invention the vertical cutter blade acts to lpress yieldingly against the movable cutter member at all times and thus to cause the movable cutter member during its forward and backward and rocking movements to maintain its flat side 8 in contact with the flat wall 7 of the slot in the temple head. These two fiat surfaces being in Contact cause the movable cutter member to be guided accurately' and reduces the wear on the movable cutter member and the temple head to a minimum. There is thus no danger of a movable cutter member floating laterally or of its being notched or worn irregularly by the relatively fired cutter blade or by shoulders or irregularities or steel members or blades. frequently employed at the opposite side from the relatively ixed cutter blade. The accurate movement of the movable cutter `member which is thus insured with a minimum amount of wear in turn maintains an effective co-operation between the two cutter members themselves and insures the effective severing of the filling when brought into the field of action of the cutting mechanism.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is:
1. A thread cutting temple conrprising :i head slotted fore and aft adjacent the end of the roll, the wall of the slot further from the roll being` flat throughout, a movable cutter member' mounted to rock and to air-,ve forwardly and backwardly in said slot and presentinga fiat side to bear throughout said movements on the flat wall of the slot, and a vertical cutter blade mounted in the head at the front end of the slot at the wall nearer the roll and acting to press yielding-fly against the movable cutter vmember' thus to cause it during its kmovements 'to bear' against and be'guided accurately by the dat wall of the slot.
2. A thread cutting' temple comprising a head slotted fore and aft adjacent the end of the roll, the wall of the slot further :fr in the roll being flat throughout, movable cutter member mounted to rock and to move forwardly and backwardly in said slot f1 ad presemting a flat side to bear throughout said movements on the flat wall of the slot, a vertical cutter blade mounted fo-r lateral nfiovement in the head at the front end of the slot at the wall nearer the roll, and means acting to press the vertical blade yieldinglv.' against the movable cutter member thus to cause it during its movements tobear against and be guided accurate-ly by the dat wail of the slot.
3. A thread cutting temple comprising a head slotted fore and aft adjacent the eri-.l of the roll, tbe wall, of the sil/ot furthcr from the roll being fiat throughout.l a incurable cutter member mounted to rock and `to move forwardly and backwardly in said slot and presenting a flat side to bear throughout said movements on the fiat wall of the slot, a vertical cutter' blade pivoted at its upper end in the head and extending at the front end of the slot adjacent the wall nearer the roll.y and a spring seated in the head and abutting the vertical `blade and acting to press it yieldin'gly against the movable cutter member thus to cause the movable cutter member during its movements to bear against and be guided accurately by the flat wall of the slot.
