FEEDER ROLL.
Application led May 9,
jects of my invention to provide a feed roll having means whereby,V .as the lumberengaging teeth on the peripheryof the roll become worn the periphery 'of the roll may l be resurfaced ata minimum cost.
For the purpose of disclosing my inven-. tion I have illustrated one embodiment thereof in which- Fig. 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of a feed roll embodying my invent-ion, and
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 27-2I of Fig. 1.
vIn the structure illustrated, I provide a shaft 1 which, intermediate of its ends` has an enlarged portion 2. `At one end of this enlarged portion there is provided an annular fiange 3; the opposite end of the enlarged portion has a diameter less than the diameter of the ange 8 and is screw threaded to receive a collar 4 interna'l'ly screw threaded, which collar when in place, forms at theopposite end, a Hangs corresponding in diameter tothe flange 3.
The enlarged portion 2 of the shaft has an external diameter of such 'dimension as to' have a sliding'fit with a tubular facing 5. Each l end of this facing is internally enlarged to fit over the lange and the collar 4, and the facing is longitudinally grooved to receive a key 9 which likewise fits in a longitudinally extending groove in the enlarged portion 2. This tubular facing is preferably formed of ordinary commercial double strength piping and has its out/erv surface longitudinally serrated as at 6. The assembly of the structure is obvious. When the serrated surface of the tubular facing 5 becomes so worn as to be ineiiicient in operation, the collar 4 is removed by unserewing and the tubular facing may be removed.
A new tubular facing is then slipped into 1923. Serial No. 637,847.
position until its enlarged and fits-over the annular fiange 3L The collar is again screwed in position until the internal annular shoulders 7 and 8 are clamped hetween the annular Harige 3 and the collar 4. The key 9v locks the facing against rotation relatively to theshaft and the structurethus provides a cheap feed roll for edging machines and the like, the periphery of which may be removed from time to time.
claim as my invention:
1. A' feed roller comprising a shaft, a feed roller thereon having at one end an integrallyformed annular ange and havin v its'opposite end screw threaded, al -1ongif tudihally serrated relatively thin walled tube sleeved over said ollerand provided'at each end with internal annular shoulders, one of which is arranged to engage the flange of the feed roller, and an internally threaded collar screwed upon the threaded end of the feed roller and forming a removable an# nular flange arranged'to engage the opposite shoulder of the tube to maintain said tube against longitudinal displacement on the roller, and a key for keying said tube on the roller. Si l 2. A feed roiler comprising a shaft havingr integrally formed lthereon an enlarged roller portion, said roller portion having at one end an integral annular fiange and being screw threaded at its opposite end, a longitudinally serrated relatively thin walled tubular facing for said roller sleeved over said roller endwise and having at its opposite ends internal annular shoulders one of said shoulders being ,arranged to abut against the Harige on the feed roller and spaced a `suiiicient distance from theend of the tube to permit the tube to'enclose said flange, a collar screw threaded on the opposite end of said roller into engagement wlth one of said shoulders, being likewise spaced from the end of the tube to permit the tube minar B. coNKLIN.
