Description

A. QELUCA SUPPORT OF COMBINATIONS OR APPARATUS DESTINED FOR PHYSICAL EXERCISES Filed Jan. 551, 1922 M M K W i g m & m w
Patented Nov. 4, 1924.
UNITED STATES ANTONIO DELUCA, 9F COR-303A,
ARGENTINA.
SUPPORT OF COMBINATIONS O'R APPARATUS DIE-STTNED FOB PHYSTCAL EXERCISES.
Application filled January 11, 1922.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANroNIo DELUcn, citizen of the Argentine Republic, residing at the city of Cordoba, Province of Cordoba, Argentine Republic, have inve t d a new and useful Support of Combinaw is or Apparatus Destined for Physical Exercises; and I do hereby declare the following to b a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
The present invention relates to apparatus for gymnastics, which hereinafter will. be called a combination support.
The combination support according to my system is constructed of aluminium or other suitable material and of the form and di mensions as will hereinafter appear and owing to the material used, is very light.
The base of my combination support is so proportioned as to absolutely insure the gymnasts mechanical stability on the same.
The height of the combination support of my system is dependent upon the user.
The combination support of my system, can be applied to any stature, weight, etc.
The hilt, as well as the compresses, of my system, are very different from other known types of dumb-bells, for the following reasons In the combination supports of my system they have been constructed with the special concern to use them as supports, and also as dumb-bells.
The surface of the middle body of the combination support of my system, is very ample, so as to accommodate the palm of the hand whereby the hand is not cramped either from the weight of the body, or from muscular contraction.
The hilt of the combination support of my system is complete, for it clasps the two dumb-bells, and under contraction by pressure, forms one single cylindrical surface.
The lower movable dumb-bell is of re duced surface, as it is to be clasped by the fingers and must be introduced into the cavity of the upper one, when the strength of the contraction is superior to the opposi tion exerted by the springs which separate both, establishing a uniform surface with absolute security of stability for the gymnast.
The combination support of my system has been tested with results, in military gymnastics, scholar gymnastics and in ortho- Serial No. 528,534.
pacdical gymnastics on patients suffering various maladies.
The cost of production of my combination support is small and the apparatus lasts a lifetime.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate the construction of the present invention Fig. l is a lateral view of the apparatus, partly in section, so as to show its interior construction.
Fig. 2 is a transverse section, through the middle of the apparatus.
Fig. 3 represents the shape of the supporting surface of the apparatus, and
Fig. 4c is a perspective view of the complete apparatus.
The material employed in the construction of the combination support is aluminium. Said apparatus consists of two prin cipal parts, one of them in the form of a footing all of one piece, and the other one constituted by a movable dumb-bell 4.
The footing is composed of two supports, each of which is formed by two legs 1 and a head piece 13, a surface of support for the palm of the hand, of semi-cylindrical form 2 and a. piece 3 joining the lower extremities of the four legs 1 of the footing. The shape of said piece may be seen in Fig. III. The movable piece 4, forming the lower dumb-bell, is of approximately cylindrical shape, carrying on both extremities projections of cubic form 5, which are adapted to move vertically within the slots 6 in the head pieces 13. These extremities 5 carry, each of them, an aperture permitting the passing of a screw 7, in its extremity 8; a helicoidal shaped spring 9 twists round said screw 7 and is lodged with its extremities in the cavities l0 existing in the pieces 2 and 5. Four springs 11 of the same shape as the former but of less strength, lodged with their extremities within the cavities 12 complete the structure of the apparatus.
The gymnast furnished with two of these apparatus, one for each hand, executes his support-gymnastics with ease, due to the appropriate dimensions of the apparatus and with complete security since the apparatus rests securely on the fioor.
Besides this exercise, he can practice exercises with the dumb-bells only, with the hands.
He rests his palms on the surface 2 and,
clasping the movable dumb-bells 4 with the fingers, closes his hand forming a fist.
This compresses the springs 9 and 1.1,causing the dumb-bell 4t, guided on the top screws 7, to contact the piece 2. Releasing the compression, the dumb-bell l returns to its original position, due to the springs.
For the gymnastic application, a pair of these apparatus are employed. With the combination supports of my system, many exercises are possible and with the maximum of ease.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is 1. A combined dumb bell and support. comprising, a supporting base, two pairs of upright legs thereon, the legs converging by pairs towards their upper ends, and a hollow, semi-cylindrical piece having a curved outer surface, and supported by said legs, a second hollow semi-cylindrical piece positioned below the said piece and slidably connected to the first said piece, a spring support at each end of the second piece,
a spring on each support, and a plurality of similar springs disposed in adequate recesses between the two said pieces, all of said springs opposing pressing together of the two said pieces.
2. A combined dumb bell and support, comprising, a supporting base, legs on said base, a grip member having two parts, and supported by said legs, the two parts of the grip member being slidable relative to each other, and-a plurality of springs positioned between said two parts and biasing the parts away from each other, said springs being readily removable, at will, whereby to adjust the biasing force.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses:
ANTONIO DELUCA.
Witnesses:
