PATENT OFFICE.
COUNTER-STOOL CONSTRUCTION.
Application fitted March 21, 1922, Serial No. 545,482. Renewed June 25, 1924.
To all whom it may concern 'Be it known that I, HENRY HUGO, a citizen of the United States, residing at Holtville, in the county of Imperial and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Counter-Stool Construction, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my said invention is the provision of a counter-stool constructlon in which the stool or stools permanently connected with the counter are adapted to be raised from the floor and positioned as when the floor is to be cleaned and may then be expeditiously and easily replaced in working position.
To the attainment of the foregoing, the invention consists in the improvement as iereinafter described and definitely claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification Figure l is an end elevation showing a portion of a counter equipped with my improvement, the stool shown being in working position.
Figure 2 is an elevation at right angles to Figure 1, with one stool in working position and the other in raised idle position.
Figure 8 is a view like Figure 1 but with the stool in raised and idle position.
Figure 4 is a front elevation of a modification.
Figure 5 is an end elevation of the same.
Figure 6 is an end elevation of another modification.
Figure 7 is an enlarged detail horizontal section taken in the plane indicated by the line 7-7 of Figure 6.
Figure 8 is a detail horizontal section. on the line 88 of Figure 1.
Similar numerals designate corresponding parts in Figures 1, 2, 3 and 8 to which reterence will first be made.
In accordance with my invention a foot rail 1, of circular form in cross-section is connected with and maintained in spaced relation to the lower portion of a counter 2, the connection being eiiected by brackets 3 fixed to the counter 2 and carrying the rail.
Mounted on the rail 1 to turn about the same are pairs of short sleeves 4t and 5, there being a pair of sleeves 4i and a pair of sleeves 5 employed in combination with each stool. The stools respectively comprise a standard rod 6, a seat 7 at the upper end of said rod, a base 8 at the lower end of the rod, and a pad 9, of rubber or other appropriate cushioning material, at the underside of the base.
The standard rod 6 of each stool is slidably arranged in upper and lower collars 10 and 11, the upper collar 10 having a bifurcated projection 12, Figure 8, in which are pivotally connected at 13 the upper ends or? downwardly-divergent arms 14, integral with or fixed to the sleeves 5, and the lower collar 10 being similarly connected with downwardly divergent arms 15, integrai with or fixed to the sleeves 4.
In virtue of the construction described, it will be manifest that when a stool is arranged upright on a floor, designated by 16, as shown in Figure l and at the left of Figure 2, the stool will be strongly held against casual lateral movement and will constitute a strong and stable seat. It will also be manifest that when it is desired to scrub, mop or otherwise clean the floor in the vicin- .ity of the counter any one of the stools may be swung upwardly and toward the counter 2 into the position shown at the right of Figure 2 and in Figure 3 in which position the padded base 8 will rest on the rail 1 and the seat 7 will rest against the face of the counter and the stool as a whole will be maintained off the floor and out of the way. After the completion of the floor-cleaning operation each of the stools obviously may be quickly and easily moved from the posh tion shown in Figure 3 to the working position shown in Figure 1.
In the modification shown in Figures i and 5 the construction is the same as in ures 1, 2, 3 and 8 except that a short individual rail 1 connected by brackets 3 to the counter 1 is employed in conjunction with each stool and the appurtenances thereof. The said modification of Figures 1 and 5 is possessed of all the capacity of function ascribed to the embodiment in Figures 1 to 3 and 8.
According to the modification shown in Figures 6 and 7, the standard rod 6 of a stool such as before described is arranged in collars 10 and 11*, each of the said collars carrying a set screw 17 to engage the standard rod 6, and each having a projection 18 with a transverse aperture 19 therethrough to rece've a headed and threaded bolt 20 on which is a wing nut 21. The upper bolt 20 is arranged in the slotted upper portions 22 of downwardly-divergent arms 1 F similar to the before described arms 14 and similarly connected to a rail 1, and the lower bolt 20 is arranged in the slotted upper portions 23 of downwardly-divergent arms similar to the before described arms 15 and similarly connected to the rail 1. The portion of each bolt adjacent to the head thereof and which portion is arranged in the slot of one of the said arms is of angular form in cross-section as indicated by 24: in Figure 7 this provision being made in order to prevent the bolts turning about their aXes.
In the use of the construction shown in.
Figures 6 and 7 it will be seen that when the set screws 17 are set against the standard rod 6, and the wing nuts 21 are tightened, the stool will be secured in the position shown in Figure 6 and against movement toward the counter 2. It will also'be understood that when the set screws 17 and the wing nuts 21 are loosened the stool may be moved upwardly and toward the counter and so that the base 8 may be supported on the rail 1, between the divergent arms 11 For convenience of assembly, the bases 8 in all of the embodiments shown and described, are preferably threaded on or other wise detachably connected to the lower ends of the standard rods 6.
It will be apparent from the foregoing rather than detract from the finished appearance of a counter with which it is associated.
I have entered into a detailed description of the construction and relative arrangement of the parts embraced in the present and preferred embodiments of my invention in order to impart a full, clear and exact understanding of the said embodiment. I do not desire, however, to be understood as confining myself to the said specific construction and relative arrangement of parts inasmuch as in the future practice of the invention various changes and modifications may be made such as fall within the scope of my invention as defined in my appended claim.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Pat ent, is a The combination of a counter, a horizontally disposed rail connected with and spaced therefrom, a stool having a standard rod in front of and extending above and be low the rail and a base at the lower end of said rod and. a seat at the upper end of the rod, and vertically-swinging means connecting said standard rod and said rail, said means having a sliding connection at one end with the rod, whereby said rod may have an upwardly sliding movement within this end of said means, the said stool being movable from a position in which its base rests on a floor to a position. with its seat edge against the counter and with its base superimposed on the rail.
In testimony thereof, I affix my signature.
HENRY HUGO.
