Be it known that T, ELERT A. HILL, a. citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in a Look Mechanism, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to permutation escutcheon locks and consists of the novel features herein shown, described and claimed.
An object of my invention is to make a lock in which the outside knob is unlocked from the locking mechanism and free to turn when the door is locked and in which the knob must be locked to the locking mechanism to unlock the door.
My invention consists broadly ot' a mortise casing, a locking bolt and a latch mounted in the casing, an inside knob for operating the latch and for locking, unlocking and moving the locking bolt, all of which is called the locking mechanism, and an outside knob adapted to turn freely relative tothe locking mechanism and having permutation mechanism adapted to connect and disconnect the outside knob relative to the locking mechanism, so that the outside knob must be locked to unlock and unlocked to lock the locking mechanism from the out side.
The permutation mechanism per se is shown, described and claimed in companion application filed Feb. 14th, 1922, Serial No. 536,581.

Referring to the drawings in detail:
The mortise casing 1 is mounted in a recess extending from the edge of the door 2 in the usual way. Referring to Figures 6 and 7, the outside knob mechanism 3 has a downwardly extending handle 4 and carries the permutation mechanism 5. The face plate 16 has lugs 17 and 18 interlocking with the lugs 11 and 15 and lugs 19 and 20 forming a dovetail slot in which dovetail 21 fits and the dovetail 21 carries the screw lug 22. The outside plate 23 fits upon the walls 9, 10 and 11, against the screw lugs 12, 13 and 22 and screws 24 are inserted through the plate ..3 into the lugs 12, 18 and 22. Aligned central bearing openings 25 and 26 are formed through the plates 8 and The connecting cylinder 27 fits between the plates 8 and 23 and has reduced ends 28 and 29 fitting in openings 25 and 26 so that the cylinder 27 may oscillate freely. The cylinder 27 has a circular recess 30 extending from its outside end and a web 31 at its inner end, there be ing'a central hub 32 at the'center of the web, a rectangular opening 33 through the hub and slotted openings 3 1 and35 diametrically on opposite sides of the hub. Slots 36 and 37 are formed through the wall of the cylinder 27 and extending upwardly and down waral from a horizontal diametrical line and lugs 38 and 39 extend radially from the cylinder at the lower ends of the slots 36 and 37. A locking lug 40 extends from the top of the cylinder and openings 41 and 42 are formed at the opposite sides of the lug 40.
The locking bolt 43 and the latch 44 are slidingly mounted between the plates 8 and 23 and extend through the face plate 16.
The details of the locking bolt 43 are as follows: A stop 45 extends from the plate 8 and forms a double spring seat. The bolt 43 has a head 46 fitting closely in the hearing through the face plate 16 and an integral two-armed ste1n47 extending from the head and a cross piece 48 connecting the arms of the stem at their inner ends, and the arms of the stem straddle the stop 45 and are half as thick as the head 46. The twoarmed sliding stem 49 fits upon the integral stem 47 and has a cross piece 50. An expansive coil spring 52 fits between the stop 45 and the cross piece 48 and a similar spring 53 fits between the stop 45 and the cross piece 50. A stop arm 54 extends from the stem 47 and stops 55 and 56 extend from the plate 8 on each side of the arm 54 to i limit the movement of'the head 43. Lugs 57 and'58 extend downwardly from the sliding stem 49 straddle of the locking lug 40 into the openings 41 and 42, so that when the cylinder 27 rotates to the left in Figure 1 the cross piece 50 engages the head 46 and extends the head to locking position and the lug 40 engages under the lug 57, as shown in dotted lines, and locks the bolt, and so that when the cylinder 27 is rotated to the right the spring 52 retracts the head 46 and the spring 53 yields and the sliding stem 49 moves to the right until it strikes the wall 11..
The details of the latch mechanism 44 are as follows: The bevelled head 59 slides through the face plate 16. Arms 60 and 61 extend from the head 59 and a cross piece 62 connects the inner ends of the arms. Stops 63 and 64 extend from the plate 8 and the cross piece 62 operates between the stops 63 and 64 to limit the movement of the latch. An expansive coil spring 65 fits between the head 59 and the stop 63 to yieldingly project the latch. Operating arms 66 and 67 extend laterally from the arms 60 and 61. A lever hub 68 has pintles 69 and 7 0 extending into bearing openings in the plates 8 and 23. A lever arm 71 extends from the hub 68 and engages the arm 66. A lever arm 72 extends from the hub 68 into the slot 37 and is engaged by the lug 39, so that when the cylinder 27 is rotated to the right in Figure 1 the latch is withdrawn as shown in Figure 2 and when the cylinder is released the springs 53 and 65 project the latch.
The details of the inside knob mechanism 6 are as follows: The escutcheon plate 7 3 fits I against theinner face of the door 2 and has against the escutcheon plate and has a pintle 76 fitting in and extending through the bearing 74 and a snap ring 77 fits in a groove in the pintle and against the inner face of the plate 73 to hold the parts together. A recess 78 extends from the inner end of the pintle 76 and a hub 79 extends from the center of the bottom of the recess 7 8. A rectangular key 80 extends into the hub 79 from its inner end and is held by a cotter pin 81, the parts being more or less loose so as not to bind. The key 80 extends into the opening 33, so that by operating the inside handle 7 the cylinder 27 is rotated to operate the looking mechanism. If the handle 7 is operated to rotate the cylinder 27 to the right in Figure 1 the latch mechanism will be operated to withdraw or retract the latch and the locking bolt mechanism will remain inoperative. If the handle is operated to rotate the cylinder 27 to the left beyond normal the bolt will be projected and locked.
The details of the outside knob mechanism 3 are as: follows: The outside esc-utcheon plate :82 is non-removably secured to the outer face; of the door 2 after the knob mechanism 3 has been applied to the plate. The head 83 fits against the escutcheon plate 82 and has a circular recess 84 extending from its outer face. The permutation mechanism 5 has a head 85 fitting in the bottom of the recess: 84 and a pintle portion 86 extending rotatably through the escutcheon plate 82 and a snap ring 87 holding the pintle fro-m withdrawal. The head 85 of the permutation mechanism 5 fits tightly in the head 83 and is held in rigid engagement therewith by frictional contact, or may be further secured by a pin or in any suitable manner. The connector 88 is cup-shaped and extends loosely into the hollow 30 of the cylinder 27. A U-shaped bar has its central portion 89 secured diametrically to the outer face of the bottom of the cup 88 and the end portions .90 and 91 extend through the openings 34 and into the recess 78. A. notch 92 is formed in the edge of the cup 88 and tongues 93 and 94 are cut and bent inwardly. The permutation mechanism 5 carried by the head 85 extends loosely into the cup 88 and the outside knob mechanism 3 may rotate freely until locked to the connector. The permutation locking bolt 95 is controlled and operated by the vermutation mechanism to engage or disengage between the tongues 93 and 94 as shown in Figure 8. A pin 96 holds the bolt 95 from rotating and limits its proj ecting movement. A spring 97 projects the bolt 95 to engage the connector 88 and then the lock may be manipulated by the outside knob the same as by the inside knob. T0- render the lock inoperative from the outside the permutation locking bolt 95 must be unlocked from the connector 88 and then operation of the outside knob will not move the looking or latching mechanism. The push buttons 98 in the recess 84: operate the permutation mechanism to move the bolt 95 to lock or unlock With the connector 818. The permutation mechanism must be locked to unlock the door and unlocked to lock the door.
The parts may be readily assembled for the other handled doors by reversing the cylinder 27, reversing the locking bolt mechanism and reversing the latching mechanism. Then the lug 38 Will operate the lever 68 to engage the arm 67. and the inside plate becomes the outside plate and the outside plate. 23 becomes the inside plate.
The permutation mechanism 5 is shown conventionally and not in detail for the reason that various permutation mechanisms may be used and these details are not a part of the present invention.
Various changes may be made Without departing from the spirit of my invention as claimed.
I claim- 1. A permutation escutcheon lock having a locking and a latching mechanism, means for operating the locking and latching mechanisms from the inside, and outside knob mechanism adapted to rotate freely, and a permutation mechanism carried by the outside knob mechanism and adapted to connect and disconnect to the locking and latching mechanisms.
2. In a lock, it normally advanced latch, a bolt, an inside handle, an outside handle, said outside handle being normally disengaged from said inside handle and free to turn Without effecting operation of the latch or bolt, means whereby turning the inside handle in one direction from normal will effect retractioi'i of the latch, operable on turning the handle in the opposite direction to the other side of normal to project the bolt and to retract the bolt on returning the handle to normal, and permutation locking mechanism operable to effect interconnection between said outside handle and said inside handle whereby said latch and bolt mayl be operated by the outside handle in a manner corresponding to that effected by operation of the inside handle.
3. A permutation escutcheon look comprising a casing, an oscillating member mounted in the casing, a locking bolt mechanism mounted in the casing, a latching mechanism mounted in the casing, connections between the oscillating member and the locking bolt mechanism and the latching mechanism so as to Withdraw or project said mechanisms, an inside knob mechanism connected to the oscillating member, an outside knob mechanism freely rotatable, and permutation mechanism for connecting the outside knob mechanism to the oscillating member.
