Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 35%,390, dated May 26, 1874 application filed March 28, 1874.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, BENJAMIN HAWKINS, of Trenton, Mercer county, New Jersey, have invented an Improvement in Cigar Molds; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full and correct description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying draw in gs, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view, and Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view, of my machine.

My invention is an improvement upon my cigar-press patented June 11', 1872; and consists in the application of a centering device, by which the box is not only centered, but held firmly in its place while the machine is in operation. Another feature of my inven tion is the application of a spring to the rear extension of the box, by which it is held in any position it may assume.

In the drawings, A represents the bottom plate, upon which are cast or otherwise socured the lugs 13 B, between which the lever O and box D are pivoted; the lugs e e, between which the concave bed E is placed and the ccntering-stamlard H, by which the box I) is centered, and firmly held by means of its forward end being sharpened and entering the grooved in the standard H. The spring S, secured to the base A, bears against the extended rear end D of the box D, and causes the box to remain in any upwardinclining position it may assume. The lever O carries the follower 1t, hollowed upon its bottom side, and secured thereto by thumb or other screws. This follower enters the box D in its operation in pressing cigars, and is constructed deep enough to pass entirely through the box D, and extend a short distance below the bottom of the box.

The object of this extension is to allow the follower B, in its descent, to pass the top of the upper half of the lower mold a, and press the cigar beyond a cylindrical form, so that it will expand after it is confined in the mold, so

that no fin or joint will appear upon the finished cigar.

It is found that in my machine patented June 11, 1872, the box will, by becoming loose in the joint upon which it is pivoted, drop upon the bed-plate, and not remain out of the way when the machine is in use.

The spring S, bearing against the extended rear end, will allow the box to assume any position, and cause it to remain in such position. The same wear and play also causes the box D to move to either side, and allows the follower It, in its descent, to cut the sides of the mold a; but my centering-standard H holds the box D firmly in position, and prevents any injury to the mold. The bed F in my patented machine is east solid with the bottom plate, and it is found that it is difficult to adjust the parts together but, by making the concave bed separate from the bottom plate, said bed can be adjusted with great facility before it is fastened.

Having thus fully described my improvement upon my patented cigar-mold, what I have invented, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The box D and follower R, in combination with a c'entering-standard, substantially as described.

2. The combination of oscillating box D, having an extended rear end, the arm 0 1t, and a friction-spring, as and for the purpose set forth.

3. The combination of the box D, mold it, follower 1t, lever O, concave bed E, and contering-standard H, substantially as described.
