Ee it known that I, CLAUDE L. Pos'r, a citizen of the Unite-d States, residing at Ghicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinoirs, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fountain Feeds, of which the following is a description.
My invention relates to improvements in fountain feeds, and more particular-ly to a fountain feed adapted for use on rotatably actuated inking disks, generally used on printing presses or the like.
Une of the objects of my invention is to provide a fountain fo-r the .rotatable disk of a printing press, which shall feed the ink to the face of the disk at regular intervals while the press is in operation, and will stop or shut off the flow of ink to the dis-k when the press is out of operation.
Another object of my invention is to provide a fountain for inking disks, in which there is provided means for regulating the amount of ink fed to the face of the disk.
`Many other objects and advantages; of the construction herein shown and described will be obvious to those skilled` in the art from the disclosures herein given.
To this end my invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and combination of parts herein `shown and described, and more particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the drawings, wherein I have illustrated the preferred embodiment of my invention.v there is shown a printing press of any desired type, having a framework 1. In the particular press shown, there are two inking disks 1 and 2, spaced apart, one of said disks being adapted to supply the inking rollers with one color of ink, while the other disk is adapted to supply another pair of rollers with a different color or printing ink, so that printing of two colors may be done on thel one press in one operation.
In the press shown the disk 2 may be tem-V porarily thrown out of operative position whenever it is desired to print in one color from the disk 1. For this purpose an arm carrying the disk 2` is pivoted to thel frame at e so that the disk and arm may be swung rearwardly of the frame. The disk 2 is secured to the arm 8 by a threaded pin 5, as shown, whereby the distance between the disks may be adjustably varied, as desired. .,-i ratchet 6 is formed on the upper side of the disk 2, and is engageable with a pawl arm 7 that is operated at suitable intervals by a bell crank leverhaving arms 8 and 9. The free end of the 9 of the bell crank lever is slotted, as at 10, to slidably receive a pin 11. A lever mechanism having arms 19 and 13 is connected at the end of the arm 13 to the pin 11, and a rollerI 14: is secured to the arm 12, so that when the arm 12 is reciprocated the roller 14 will ride over a camwag.7 15, provided on the frame of the press, and rock the bell crank lever 8 9 about its pivot to reciprocate the pawl arm 7 and partially rotate the disk 2 in the direction indicated by the arrow in Fig. 1. It is to be understood that the. disk 2 may be rotated 'through any desired or preferred means, the rotating mechanism not forming a part of my present invention.
I have provided fountain means for the disk 2, so that ink may be supplied in suitable quantities and at desired intervals to the face ofthe disk adapted to be engaged by the rollers. The fountain comprises a reservoir 16 secured by any Asuitable fastoning means, as by bolts 17, to the upper surface of the disk 2 above an opening or port 18 formed through said disk. A fountain roller 19 is revolubly mounted in the reservoir 16 and ext-ends into the opening 18, so that its periphery is substantially flush with the working face of said disk 2 as shown in Fig. 3.
Any preferred means for actuating the roller may be employed, but I have found the following means satisfactory for the purpose. The axle of the foiuitain roller 19 is extended through the reservoir at one side thereof, and carri-es a ratchet 20L A rod 21 is revolubly mounted on the aXle of the roll, as shown in Fig. 4, extending above the reservoir to a sufficient distance so that when the disk is rotated, the arm 21 will be engaged and actuated by the arm 3 of the press, as shown in Figs. 1 and 4.
A pawl 22 is carried by the arm 2 1 and is lli) cugageabl-e with the teeth of the ratchet 20. A spring 23, having one end secured to the reservoir 16, tends to pull the arm carrying the pawl 22 toward the right, as shown in Fig. et, so that when the arm 21 strikes and passes under the arm 3 as the disk is revolved, the pawl 22- will ride over the teeth of t-he ratchet 30, the spring 23 pulling the arm 21 to engage the ratchet 20 and partially rotate the fountain roller 19 in the direction shown by the arrows in the drawings. Thus it is seen that each time the arm 21 passes the arm 3, the fountain roller 1.9 will be revolved to feed the ink in the reservoir through the opening 18.
In order to regulate the amount of ink fed through the opening, I have provided a flexible plate 25, having one end secured within the reservoir, as at 24, and the free end engageable with the periphery of the roller adjacent the opening 18. Any suitable means, as for instance blocks 26, may be provided to adjustably move the free end of the plate toward the periphery of the fountain roller 19, so that the iiow of ink through the space between the roll and the plate 25, and thence out the opening 18 may be regulated.
In order that dust, dirt, or other foreign matter may be kept from the reservoir, I have arranged a cover 27 fitting over the open top of the reservoir and removably held thereon by screws 28er the like.

Having thus described my invention, it is obvious that various immaterial modifications may be made in the same without departing from the spirit of my invention; hence I do' not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the exact form, construe.

What I claim as new and desire tosecure i by Letters Patent is:
1. In a device of the kin-d described and in combination, a rotary disk, drive means for rotating said disk, a supply reservoir mounted on said disk and movable therewith, and means controlled by the movement of said reservo-ir for feeding the material therefrom to the face of said disk.
2. In a device of the kind described and in combination, a rotary disk, drive means therefor, a reservoir carried by said disk and provided with aport leading to the face thereof, intermittently operable means carried by said reservoir and positively actuated during the movement thereof for feeding the material therefrom to the face of said disk, and means for adjustably regulating the fionv of material through said duct. l
3. In a device of the kind described and in combination, a disk having an opening therethrough leading to its face, drive means for said disk, a reservoir carried by said disk and communicating with said opening, a revolubl-e roller in said opening and eX- tending into said reservoir, means for revolving said roller relatively to said disk to cause the material in the reservoir to flow through said opening, a flexible plate fixed at one end of said reservoir and having its free end yieldably engageable with said roller, a block movable in said reservoir and engageable with said plate, and means operable from the exterior of said reservoir for adjustably moving said block to move the free end of said plate toward said roller or to permit it to move away therefrom to adjustably regulate the flowthrough said opening.
