has not. been considered necessary to illustrate'any part or the lpress, in] the drawing,

Such strip, it will be understood, passes through the die mechanism between such stripping plate and the block 3 in which the lower or female punch members mounted.
In the illustrative form of the mechanism shown in the drawing a series of seven punches is provided, these being adaptedto act simultaneously on a strip of metal, whereby, as such strip A'is advanced step by step, a series of dome-like projections a, afiu a a a and a is formed as shown in Fig. 4:. Thevcharacter of these projections and the manner in which they are formed by the several pairs of punches will now be more specifically set forth.
The first pair of punches 10 and 10 serve to'punch up the shallow rounded dome-like projection a, following which the punches 11 and 11? draw such projection into the slightly more elongated form a haw-ing its diameter somewhat reduced. It will be noted that the female punch member 11 is resiliently supported by means of a spring 11 in the block 3, so to cause said punch to normally project a short distance above the upper face of the block. The male punch 12 of the next pair hasv its extremity reduced so as to leavea shoul der, as clearly shown in Fig. 1, and the cor responding female punch comprises'a bushing 12 within which is resiliently supported,
by means of a spring 12 a central plunger 12 that conforms with the end of said punch 12, while the opening in the bushing is of a diameter corresponding with the base or shouldered portion of said'punch 12. The result'of thecoaction of these two punches, accordingly, is toshape or draw the dome like projection on the strip A into the shoul-' dered form a (Fig. 4:).
The male punch 13 of the fourth pair is terminally formed similar to the end of punch 12, but instead of having a completely encircling shoulder it is provided with a pair of oppositely disposed shoulders 13 The complementary female punch comprises a bushing13 that is formed with raised lands 13 disposed tofllie at right angles to shoulders 13 on punch 13, while a plunger 1 3 is resiliently supported centrally in said bushing by means of a spring .18 The result of the coaction of these two punch members is to draw the metal in theencircling-shoulder of projection a intoopare the base portion which correspond in location with that ofthe two'shoulders onthe: stamped up projection a as left by the" fourth operation, are adapted to shear such shoulders from the adjacent walls of the dome proper along both their transverse and vertical lines of juncture therewith. the shoulders of the fastener member where attached to the dome are sheared therefrom between the sharpened edges of the member 14* and of the members 14. Further movement of the dies causesthe members 14to flatten out the sheared shoulders against the'under side of the punch or die 14. As a consequence of this operation; the adjacent edges of such shoulders will be forcedpast the cutting edges of th'emember 14 and will be caused to lie slightly under such cutting edges or inside the frustumof such member; but due to the thinness of the metal used in the manufacture of fasteners of the type in hand, said member 14? is easily withdrawn. During. the withdrawal of said mei'n her, the previously flattened out shoulders spring back slightly andithen return totheir flattened condition after thejpunch l l'is com-- pletely removed from contact therewith.
The two remaining. pairs of punches 15, 15 and 16, 16 are of familiar construction in die mechanism of the class in hand, designed for stamping up snap fastener parts. In other words, punch 15 is provided with a plurality of circularly spaced projections 15 that are adapted to enter corresponding recesses 15 in the lower punch 15 whereby appropriate holes are formed in the flat portion of the strip around the previously slotted boss or dome for the purpose of sewing the fastener part when finished to a garment or the like. Of the final pair, lower punch 16 consists, as shown, of a bushing with a central plunger 16 resiliently supported by a spring 16, and said punch co-operates with the upper punch 16 to size and to finish the previously stamped up and slotted fastener part. If necessary, the die members illustrated at 16 can be used to finally flatten out the shoulders.
The manner in which the fastener parts as thus finished are separated from the strip or sheet forms no part of the present invention. In other words, the product of the die mechanism as just described consists of a strip or sheet with a succession of stamped up laterally slotted bosses or domes formed therein of the kind shown at a Fig. 4. It will be understood that a number of sets of punches such as just described may be arranged side by side, and be caused to operate simultaneously on a wider strip of material to form such bosses or domes in plural series; alsothat suitable means will be provided to feed the strip through between the mechanism so as to advance the same step by step through a distance equal to that between any two successive punches, all of which are of course spaced equal distances apart. While in the mechanism as illustrated and described the forming shoulders 13 on upper punch 13, and the cutting shoulders 14" on upper punch 14, together with the co-operative parts of the corresponding lower punches, are disposed so as to form the slots in the domes or bosses on opposite sides of the aXis of the strip or a line passing through the series of such domes or bosses, it will be evident that by placing the punches in question in a different angular position about their respective axes, the location of the slots relatively to such line can be changed as desired. There is no limitation, in other words, in this respect, such as is incurred where saws or knives are employed as heretofore to form the slots in question, and where plural rows of domes are being simultaneously formed it is not necessary that the angular location of the slots be the same in each such series.
The die mechanism is much simplified in any event by the elimination of such saws or knives, and the necessarily more or less complicated devices required to actuate the same in proper timed relation with the movement of the die pants. By forming the slots in the fashion hereinbefore described, the operation becomes a simple punching operation, with no possibility of lost motion, and the cutting of the slots furthermore does not involve the bodily removal of any of the material of the strip, and thus produces no small pieces of metal to clog and interfere with the cutting of the slots.
Other modes of applying the principle of my invention may be employed instead of the one explained, change being made as regards the means herein disclosed, provided those stated by any of the following claims or their equivalents be employed.
I therefore particularly point out and distinctly claim as my invention 2- 1. In mechanism of the character described, the combination with a series of paired male and female dies adapted to form in a sheet a dome-like projection having sloping shoulders on opposite sides, of a pair of dies formed with co -operating cutting edges adapted to shear such shoulders adjacent the dome proper.
2. In mechanism of the character described, the combination with a series of paired male and female dies adapted to form in a sheet a dome-like projection having sloping shoulders on opposite sides, of a pair of dies formed with. co-operating cutting edges adapted to shear such shoulders adjacent the dome proper, and with opposed flat faces adapted to flatten out such shoulders to the plane of the sheet after being thus sheared.
3. In mechanism of the character described, the combination with a series of paired male and female dies adapted to form in a sheet a dome-like projection having sloping shoulders on opposite sides, of a pair of dies formed with co-operating transverse and vertical cutting edges adapted to shear such shoulders along both their transverse and vertical lines of juncture with the dome proper, and with opposed flat faces adapted to flatten out such shoulders to the plane of the sheet after being thus sheared.
