Be itvknown that I, VILLIAM F. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tacoma, in the county of Pierce and State of Washington, have invented new and useful Improvements in Moto-rs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention comprehends the provision of a power transmitting apparatus,- wherein use is made of` a drive wheel looselyvmounted upon a shaft,v the drive wheelreceiving the' been completely elevated.

Referring to the drawings in detail, 10 indicates a shaft upon which is loosely. mounted a drive wheel 11 and a drum` 12, the latter being provided withgrooves or depressions 13 to accommodate theconvolutions of Aoped may a cable 14 which is adapted to be wound about and unwound from the drum 12. ,A weight 15 is secured to one end 4of thec'able so as to rapidly rotate the drum 12 as the cable 14 is unwound from the drum'12 incident to the falling of the Weight. The drum 12 is provided with dogs 16 Ydisposed to engage the drive wheel 11, so that ,the latter receives the potential energy of the falling weight, and the power thus develbe utilized to operate various kinds of machinery. l l
I provide a. tideo'rwave actuatedv means for winding the cable 14 about'the drum v'12, and this means includes. afloat 17 which is connected to an upright 18,-the latter having secured theretoa cross piece 129 whtivchfsup-` ports parallel rackbars 2O .and 21` respec-4 tively. The teeth ofthe rack b ar 20 lare reversely disposed tothe teeth lcarried by the bar 21. The rac'lrbars. are arranged at opposite sidesof a ratchet wheel 22 which is `Ikeyed upon the shaft 10 adjacent 'one end of the'drum 12,"and it is manifestthat the rack bars 20 and 21 are moved up and down incident to the irregular movements ofthe tide or waves. With thepupward movement of the rack bars, the barf20 rotates the ratchet` wheel 22 in one direction, and when the racl'bars are moved downwardly, the disposition of the teeth carried theracli bar-21 is such as to continuewthe rotation of theratchet wheel 22 in the saine direetion. Therefore the shaft 10"is constantly rotated, while there is any motion imparted jufo-"the rack bars incident to the rise and fall of the tide or waves. Y Pivoted within the drum 12 is a lever 23,-th-is-lever being pivoted at a point between its ends asat 24. Projecting laterally from oneend of `the lever-is a latch element` 25 adapted to be received by openings 26 in the ratchet wheel 22, when the lever 23 moves upon its pivot in one direction. The latch element when associated with the ratchet wheel 22 serves to hold the drum 12 fixed relatively tothe shaft 10, so. that the drum may be rotatedv bythe float actuated means in order to rewind the cable 14 about the drum. MIn order to move the lever 23 in aproper direction'fo'r the' purpose just mentioned, the lever at its opposite end is connected to a flexible element 27, this element being trained. over a pulley 28 also arranged `within the drum, andy is terf minally connected tothe cable 14`atla point in its length. Consequently, when the weight 15 reaches its lowermost position, or that occupied in Figure 2, a lpull is exerted upon the flexible element 27, thereby rocking the lever 23 upon its pivot and moving the latch element into engagement with the ratchet wheel 22. Now, if the shaft is rotated incident to the rise and fall of the tide or waves in the manner above described, the drum is also rotated being fixed upon the shaft, and the cable 14 is thus wound about the drum elevating the weight.
In accordance with the present invention, l provide means for automatically releasing the drum from the shaft 10, so that it is permitted to rotate incident to the falling of the weight 15. In carrying out this idea, l preferably make use of a bell crank lever which is pivoted within the drum as at 29, one branch 30 of this lever being connected by means of a. link 31 to the lever 23. Connect ed to the other branch 32 of the bell crank lever is the stem of a substantially T-shazped trip element 33 which operates through an opening in the drum 12, the head of the trip element being slightly curved to fit within the final groove 13. When the cable 14 is being wound about the drum, the final convolution is brought into contact with the curved head 34 of the trip element, thereby moving it in the direction of the drum 12, which movement rocks the bell crank lever, which in turn moves the lever 23 upon its pivot in a direction to separate the latch element 25 from the ratchet wheel 22. rlhis obviously releases the drum from the shaft 10, so that just as soon as the weight reaches its uppermost or elevated position, the drum is released from the shaft 10, so that it can be rotated with the falling of the weight. rhe element 27 is not a part of the flexible element 14, but is terminally connected to the element 14 at an appropriate point in its length as clearly indicated in Figure 5. Consequently when the weight is in its elevated position, the element 27 is slackened, or released of its tension, and of its own weight drawn back into the drum. This arrangement is clearly shown in Figure G. The tension on the member is caused by the swinging of the Weight 14 away from the drum, when the. weight is near its lowest position. The flexible element 14 is fixed at one end to the drum and never fully unwinds therefrom. The force exerted on the element 27 occurs only when the weight assumes its lowermost position, as shown in Figure 5. As soon as the latch 25 enters the slot 26, the drum begins to turn, and the flexible element 14 swings back to the drum and all tension is released from the member 27. It isto be remembered that the weight 15 never strikes the bottom and that there is no force whatever to cause the latch element 25 to enter the slot 26 until the flexible element 14 is sufficiently unwound to swing away from the drum. Then all the force of the weight is exerted or utilized to cause the element 25 to enter the slot 26.
While it is believed that from the foregoing description the nature and advantages of the invention will be readily apparent, I desire to have it understood that I do not limit myself to what is herein shown and described, and that such changes may be resorted to when desired as fall within the scope of what is claimed.
What I claim is:
1. A power transmitting apparatus comprising a shaft, a drive wheel loosely mountf ed thereon, a drum loosely mounted on said shaft, means whereby the drum rotates the drive wheel when the drum is rotated in one direction, a cable secured to the drum and adapted to be wound about and unwound u therefrom, a weight suspended from the cable for rotating the drum in the direction above mentioned, float actuated means for rotating said shaft, means for fixing said drum on the shaft for rotation therewith, whereby the cable is rewound upon the drum, said means being controlled by the cable, and means for automatically releasing the drum at a predetermined interval for the purpose specified.
2. In a power transmitting apparatus, a shaft, a drive wheel loosely mounted on the shaft, a drum loosely mounted on the shaft, means carried by the drum for rotating the drive wheel when the drum is rotated in one direction, a cable attached to the drum and adapted to be wound about and unwound therefrom, a weight suspended from the free end of the cable for rotating said drum in the direction above mentioned, float actuated means for rotating said shaft, means automatically operating at a predetermined interval for fixing the drum upon the shaft, whereby the cable is rewound about the drum, and means actuated by the final con volution of the cable for automatically releasing the drum to permit the latter to be rotated in an opposite direction by the fall of the weight.
3. ln a power transmitting apparatus, a shaft, means for rotating said shaft, a drive wheel loosely mounted on the shaft, a drum loosely mounted on the shaft, a cable secured to said drum and adapted to be wound about and unwound therefrom, a weight suspended from the cable for rotating the drum in one direction, means whereby the drive wheel is rotated by the drum when the latter is rotated incident to the fall of said weight, means controlled by the cable for lll() locking the drum on said shaft subsequent y to the fall of the weight, whereby the drum is rotated with said shaft to rewind the cable about the drum, and means actuated by the final convolution of the cable as it is wound about the drum to automatically release the drum from the shaft for the purpose specified.
4. A power transmitting apparatus comprising a shaft, a drum loosely mounted thereon, a drive wheel loosely mounted thereon, a cable secured to the drum and adapted to be wound about and unwound therefrom, a weight suspended from the cable for rotating the drum in one direction, means whereby the drive wheel is rotated by said drum when the latter is rotated incident to the fall of the weight, a ratchet wheel fixed upon the shaft, float actuated means associated with said ratchet wheel for rotating said shaft, a lever pivoted Within the drum, a latch element carried by the lever, a connection between the lever and said cable whereby the latch element is moved into engagement with the ratchet wheel subsequent to the fall of the weight, to lock the said drum on the shaft, whereby the cable is rewound about the drum during the continued rotation of the shaft, means operating Within the drum and connected with said lever, and operated by the final convolution of the cable for automatically releasing the drum from the shaft, whereby said drum may be again rotated incident to the fall of the weight.
