UNITE "FFICE. I
OIL BURNER.
Application filed J'une 19, 1923.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH SOHERMULY, a citizen of the United States, resident of Wichita, county of Sedgwick, and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oil Burners, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this application.
My invention relates to a fuel oil burner.
The object of my invention is to provide a burner which preheats the air that is required to mix with the oil for combustion, a further object of my invention is to proviile an emergency disposal of overflowing o1 Referring to the drawings Fig. 1 is a top view of my burner, with all parts assembled, Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the base plate. Fig. 4 is a top view of the dome, showing the radiating grooves. Fig. 5 is a sectional view of the arched preheating air duct, taken on line A looking in direction of arrow.
1 is the base plate, having an annular basin 2, 3 is a drain pipe for said basin, 4 is an aperture registering with a tubular opening 5 passing thro member 6, and said opening registers with the arched preheating duct 7 and said arched duct registers with an opening in member 6 on the opposite side, the said members 1 and 6 are fastened together by adjoining protruding ears 8 by means of bolts 9 and the members 6 and 7 are fastened together with bolts 10 engaging through ears of member 7 into the shell of member 6, 11 is a grooved dome, having grooves 12 on its convex surface, said grooves radiating from the center, the said dome is supported by legs 13, said legs resting on the edges of an aperture 14 which is concentric to the mechanism proper. 15 is the supply pipe, screwed into a hub 16 as means for supplying fuel oil to the center of said convex dome 11 and the said oil will flow thro the said grooves 12 distributing the oil equally on the periphery of said dome. 17 is a union functioning as binding means to hold said dome firmly in place centering over said opening 14 said union 17 functions as means to connect a supply pipe 18 which extends to a fuel tank not shown.
Serial No. 646,342.
19 is a hood adapted to fit closely over a grooved dome 11 functioning as a cap covering for grooves 12 and also as an extension over the dispensing line of the oil. The edge 20 circumscribing the opening 14 is turned upward forming an annular generating pan 21 which is adapted to hold oil for generating purposes or the superfluous oil unconsumed while the burner is in action, and in the event of an overflow of said generating pan the oil will collect in the annular basin 2 and be carried away by drain pipe 3.
When the burner is in action the combustion takes place following the annular walls 22 and the flames and heat extending upward heating the duct 7 as means for preheating the air creating a circulation entering the aperture 4 and passing thro opening 5 and duct 7 and into the air chamber 23 of member 6 and passing out thro the center opening 14 preheating the oil passing thro grooves of dome 11 as means for converting the oil into gas, as they mix at the edge of said hoods, and the annular walls 22, where the combustion takes place.
Such modifications may be made as lies within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my inventions what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is In an oil burner, a base plate having an annular basin centrally positioned therein, an overflow pipe connected to said basin, an aperture on one end of said base plate, an air chamber mounted on said base plate, said air chamber having a generating pan concentric thereto, a tube in one end of said air chamber registering with the aperture in said base, an arched air duct being open at each end and adapted to register with the said tube and the opening in the air chamber in the opposite end thereof, means for connecting the base plate, air chamber and arched duct firmly together so that the air circulation will enter the said aperture 4 passing through said tube and said arched duct and from thence into the air chamber and passing out through the opening of-the generating pan, a supply pipe passing through the base plate concentric to the annular basin and extending upward through the aperture of the generating pan, a dome mounted on the end of said pipe, said dorne having a plurality of radiating grooves on the convex side and on the opposite side a plurality of legs adapted to seat on the rim of the generating pan, a hood mounted on said dome functioning as means for confining the flow of oil through said grooves dispensing equally around the periphery, the said hood also functions as means for generating said oil into gas as dispensed from said grooves for the purpose described.
JOSEPH SCHERMULY.
