Be it known that I, EDWARD lV. SALMON,
Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing` in the city of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented new and useful lmprovements in Filing and Storage Cabinets, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a iiling and'storage cabinet.
One object of the invention is to provide a cabinet having a compartment whose door opening is provided with a rib and 'groove form of door jamb, designed to coact with reversely formed rib and groove arrangement on the inner face of the door with resilient packing material in the grooves for compression by the respective ribs to thereby provide. a non-leaking joint between the door and the door jamb, there being an automatically operating locking device designed to maintain the ribsin tight packing engagement with the resilient packing material in the respective grooves.
Another object resides in the provision of a cabinet provided with a compartment whose door opening is provided with a rib and groove form of door jamb, the door jamb having a metallic facing, the faced rib and groove form of door jamb being adapted to coact with a door of fire-proof material enclosed within a metallic envelope with the door provided with a reverse form of rib and groove arrangement, whereby the groove of the door jamb will take the rib of the door and the groove' of the door will take the rib of the door jamb, there being packing material in the respective grooves adapted to be compressed by the respective ribs.
A still further object of the invention resides in the provision of a fire-proof cabinet particularly designed for the filing and storing of moving picture films or other combustible records, in which the cabinet is provided with a wall to provide adjacent compartments having adjacent door openings, the door openings being eachnprovided with an undercut form of rib and groove type of door jamb, each door jamb having a metal facing, and a hinged door for each compartment composed of fire-proof material and enclosed in a metallic envelope, and each door having its inner face provided with a continuous rib adapted to iit in the continu ous groove of the door jamb and also provided with a continuous groove to receive the continuous rib of the door j amb with a metallic reinforcementembedded in the partition wall to strengthen the door jamb at the forward edge of the partition wall and connected to the metal 'facing of the door jamb of said wall to anchor the same in tight engagement with the partition wall.
It is still further designed to provide a lire-proof cabinet for the filing and storage of moving picture films or other combustible or valuable records in 'which a device mounted in the cabinet and connected to the door thereof to limit outward swinging of the door and to effect'automatic` closing of the door under the influence of said device and to cause the closing door to actuate a locking device to move past the same and j amb tightly into closedV position with relation to the compartment.
With the above and other objects in` View the invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompaying drawings andpointed out in the claims hereto appended, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion and "minor details of construction, withinthe scope of the claims, may be resorted to without ,departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawings, it will be understood that the illustrations accompanying this specification are for the purpose of eX- plaining only that which forms a part of the present application, as divided out of my copending application filed August 3, 1922, Serial No. 579,451. While there is illustrated herein a portable cabinet having but two side by side compartments, the cabinet may form separable units or sections, after the fashion disclosed in my aforesaid co-pending application and as shown in Figure 1 herein, or for use otherwise as may be desired. llVith these thoughts in mind, and as illustrated in the accompanying` drawings, there is shown a lire-proof tiling and storage cabinet, composed of relatively thick walls formed of non-combustible, non-heat conducting material 5, including a partition wall 6 to provide separate side by side compartments Z in each of which moving picture films or other combustible or r cord material may be filed or stored. L he top, bottom and rear side of the cabinet may be enveloped in a relatively thin sheet of metal 8, if desired.
rEhe outer face of the partition wall 6 is designed to form a part of the door j amb of each of the side by side compartments. Each door jamb is undercut and has a continuous rib 9 and an adjacent continuous groove 10, and the front of the cabinet may be provided with a thin metal facing 1l, as shown,
, the facing taking the shape of the ribs and grooves of the door jambs, if employed.
A lire-proof door 12 is provided for each compartment. Each door is composed preferably of relatively thick non-combustible, non-heat conducting material enclosed within a thin metallic envelope 13. Each door is preferably hinged at 1st adjacent t-he i bottom of the respective compartment and on its inner face it is provided with a continuous tapering rib 15 adapted to lit tightly within the continuous tapering walled groove of the respective door jamb, and also has a continuous tapering walled groove 16 adapted to tightly receive the respective tapering rib of the door jamb, there being resilient packing material 17 in each groove, designed to be compressed by the respective rib so as to effect a non-leaking joint between the respective door and its jamb and thereby, in the event of a fire within one compartment, preventing escape of fumes, gases and odors through such compartment into an adjacent compartment or from entering the room in which the cabinet may be stored.
To reinforce the partition wall 6, at its front edge and to further guard against the passage of fumes and gases from one compartment to another, l embed in the partition wall a metallic reinforcement 18, which, shown, is corrugated longitudinally and extends preferably from the lower edge to the top edge of the partition wall. The outer edge of this reinforcement member 18 is Aadapted to be soldered, welded or otherwise secured to the face 11 of the partition wall, so as to cause the 'facing to cling tightly to the front edge of the partition wall and to otherwise co-act with the rib and groove formation of the door and door jamb and the packing material to prevent leakage between the compartments.
Each door is adapted to be locked against accidental opening in the event of a lire therein, so as to prevent the egress of gases or fumes through an open door into the room in which the cabinet is installed or from one compartment to the other. The locking means is designed to have the further function of creating such a binding action on the respective door as to accelerate the compression of the resilient packing material in the respective grooves. rlthe locking means preferably employed is in the nature of a normally downward gravitating latch 19 pivoted at its outer end, as at 20, in a suitable hanger 21 adjacent the top of the respective compartment.
A hand member 22 is secured to each door to facilitate opening the same and to open a door of a compartment the hand member 22 may be grasped and the latch 18 moved upwardly out of the path of an outwardly swinging door, the door thereby moving `outwardly below the latch. Upon closing the door the upper edge of the same engages the under edge of the latch 19 and moves the same upwardly on its pivot 2O until the upper edge of the door has cleared the latch 19, when the latter will drop by gravity downwardly over the joint between the upper edge of the door and the door jamb and lock the door against accidental opening and insure compression of the packing in the grooves.
lWhile the door may be closed by hand, as far as the door and door jamb illustrated and described is concerned, it is desired in one embodiment of the invention to provide for an automatic closing and locking of each door. To this end, l provide a holder 23 for the record material which is swingingly or rockingly mounted in each compartment on crossed links 24 and 25 pivotally connected to the holder and pivotably connected also to a base 26, the link 24 being longer than the link 25 so as to give a slight upward lifting movement to the holder as it moves forwardly toward the door Iopening and so that the holder will normally gravitate backwardly to normal position in the compartment. A lai-shaped flexible link 27 has its legs connected to opposite sides of the rear end of the holder and connected with the door so that when the door is opened, the holder is rocked forwardly to permit ready access thereto all as described in my aforesaid copending application. The pivotal mounting of the holder and the said connection between the holder and door limits outward movement of the door short of dead center so that when the operator releases the door,

the record holder gravitates backWa-rdly to normal position in the cabinet and by virtue of the link connection 27 between the holder and the door, the holder constantly exerts a pulling action on the open door and causes return of the door to closed position under the influence of the holder immediately upon the release of the opened door.
As previously stated, the downwardly gravitating latch 2() is designed to lock the door of each compartment and this latch has to be moved upwardly upon its pivot to permit opening of the respective door. However, on the automatic return movement of the door to closed position, the upper edge of the door coacts with the locking device by engaging the under side of the latch and noves it upwardly to permit the door to clear the latch when the latter falls and locks the door against accidental opening. The result is that the holder causes the open door to close automatically actuating the locking device in the operation, andby the pull of the holder the door is jambed into a tight fit with the door jamb causing compression of the resilient packing material in the grooves of the door jamb and thereby effectually providing a non-leaking joint between the door` jamb and door, the locking device coacting with the holder to maintain the tight jambing of the door against the packing material in the door and door j amb. In the eventof wear of the packing or compactness of the same due to use, the inner cam shaped end of the latch compensates for such wear and compactness and insures a tight binding between the door and its jamb.
What is claimed is:
1. The combination with a cabinet having a partition therein to divide the cabinet into separate compartments, a metallic facing on the front edge of the partition, a metallic reinforcing member embedded in the partition and having connection with said metallic facing, and a door for each compartment.
2. The combination with a cabinet composed of non-combustible`l non-heat conducting material and formed en bloc and provided with a partition to provide separate side by side compartments, each compartment having a door jamb provided with a continuous rib and a continuous groove, resilient packing in said groove, a hinged door for the compartment having its inner face provided with a continuous groove and a continuous rib, the groove of the door having a resilient packing therein, the rib of the door being adapted to enter the groove of the door jamb and the rib of the door jamb being adapted to enter the groove of the door, the front edge of the partition having part of the door jamb of adjacent compartments formed therein, a metallic facing for the front'edge of the partition wall conforming to the shape of the ribbed and grooved front edge thereof, and a reinforcing member embedded in the partition wall between the sets of ribs and grooves formed in the front edge thereof to reinforce the partition walland to bind `the metallic facing tightly to the front edge of the partition wall.
3. The combination with a cabinet composed of non-combustible, non-heat conducting material and formed en bloc and provided with a partition to provide separate side by side compartments, each compartment having a door jamb provided with a continuous rib and a continuous groove, resilient packing in said groove, a hinged door for the compartment having its inner face provided with a continuous groove and acontinuous rib, the groove of the door having a resilient packing therein, the rib Vof the door being adapted to enter the groove of the door jamb and the rib of the door jamb being adapted to enter the groove of the door, the frontedge of the `partition having part of the door jamb of adjacent compartments formed therein, a metallic facing for the front edge of the partition wall conforming to the shape of the ribbed and grooved front edge thereof, and a corrugated reinforcing member embedded in the partition wall between the sets of ribs and grooves formed in the front edge thereof to reinforce the partition wall and to bind the metallic facing tightly to the front edge of the partition wall.

The combination with a cabinet provided with a partition to divide the cabinet into side by side compartments, each having a door opening, a metallic facing disposed over the front edge of the partition, a metallic reinforcing member embedded in the partition wall adjacent the front edge thereof, and having connection with said facing to reinforce the wall at the front edge and to secure the facing tightly to the partition wall, and a door for each compartment.
5. The combination with a cabinet provided with a .partition to divide the cabinet into separate compartments, each compartment having a door opening, a corrugated metallic reinforcing member embedded in the partition wall adjacent the front edge thereof, a metallic facing for the front of the cabinet having connection with said reinforcing member and a door for each compartment.
6. The combination with a cabinet provided with a partition to divide the cabinet into side by side compartments, the cabinet being formed en bloc and composed of diatomaceous material, each compartment having a door opening, a metallic facing disposed over the front edge of the partition, a metallic reinforcing member emfront edge of the partition Wall, and a door for each compartment.
7. The combination With a cabinet provided with a partition to divide the cabinet into side by side compartments, the cabinet being formed en bloc and composed of diatomaeeous material, each compartment having a door opening, a metallic facing disposed over the front edge of the partition, a corrugated metallic reinforcing member embedded in the partition Wall adjacent the front edge thereof, and having connection with said metallic facing to reinforce the partition Wall at the front edge thereof and to secure the metallic facing tightly to the front edge of the partition Wall, and a door for each compartment.
8. The combination With a cabinet provided With a partition to divide the cabinet into side by side compartments, the cabinet being formed en bloc and composed of diatomaceous material, each compartment having a door opening, a metallic facing disposed over the front edge of the partition, a longitudinallj7 corrugated, metallic reinforcing member embedded in the partition Wall adjacent the front edge thereof, and having connection With said metallic facing to reinforce the partition Wall at the front edge thereof and to secure the metallic facing tightly to the front edge of the partition Wall, and a door for each compartment.
9. The combination with a cabinet provided ivith a partition to divide the cabinet into side by side compartments, each compartment having a door opening, the cabinet being formed en bloc and composed of noncombustible, non-heat conducting material, a metallic facing disposed over the front edge of the partition, and a combined reinforcing and anchoring member connected to the facing to anchor the same and to reinforce the partition at its front edge, and a door for each compartment.
