NECK-roan I' ooK.
Application filed July 18, 1923;, Serial no. 552,405;
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, JOHN H. LEWIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rhinelander, in the county of Oneida and State of WVisconsin, have invented a new and useful Neck-Yoke Lock, of which the following is specification.
The present invention has reference to neck yokes and aims to provide a novel form of neck yoke which may be readily and easily secured to the outer extremity of a wagon pole.
The primary object of the invention is to provide means for locking the yoke to the wagon pole to insure against the same becoming displaced therefrom, the locking means being such as to permit the ready application of the yoke.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which may be readily and easily positioned on the usual wagon poles now in use, eliminating the neccessity of making extensive alterations in the pole construction to mount the device.
Vith the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter de-v scribed and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to the drawing:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a pole disclosing a yoke as secured thereto;
Figure 2 is a fragmental front elevational View thereof.
Figure 3 is an enlarged detail view of the pole and yoke locking means, portions of the pole and yoke being shown in section.
Referring to the drawing in detail,'the reference character 5 designates a wagon -pole which is tapered towards its outer or free end in the usual manner. An opening 6 is formed in the free end of the pole 5 and accommodates the sliding bolt 7 which is formed with a threaded opening to accommodate the controlling arm 8 by means of which the bolt 7 may be moved to its active and inactive position, there being provided a coiled spring 9 within the opening and engaging the bolt 7 for normally urging the bolt 7 to the limit of its outward movement.
The look also embodies a lower section 10 and an upper section 11, each section being curved transversely of its length so that the same may fit over the pole 5. The bolt 12 passes through the sections 10 and 11 and through a suitable opening formed in the pole, which bolt is adapted to clamp the sections 10 and 11 against movement.
The outer extremity of the lower section 10 extends upwardly in spaced relation with the free end of the pole 5, where the sameis provided with an opening 13 to accommodate the reduced end 1 of the sliding bolt 7, thereby providing a keeper for the sliding bolt when the sliding bolt is in its inactive or locking position.
As shown, the upper section 11 has one end thereof extending upwardly at 15 and downwardly at 16 to provide an abutting surface to be engaged by the yoke 17 to relieve the bolt 7 of the strain usually directed to the pole 5, when the draft animals which are hitched to the pole hold back as in the case of backing the vehicle. The downwardly extended portion 16 has a threaded ext-remity 18 passing through an opening in the lower section 10 where a nut 19 is positioned thereon securing the upper and lower sections together.
Supported by the yoke 17 is a band 20 which is secured to the yoke in any suitable manner, the ends 21 forming a part of the band being supplied with openings to accommodate the sliding" bolt 7 so that when the yoke is positioned, as shown by figure 3 of the drawing, the yoke will be securely locked against displacement from the pole 5.
What is claimed as new is 1. In combination with a wagon pole having an opening formed in one end thereof, a spring pressed bolt movable within the open ing, a locking device including an upper section and a lower section, the lower section having an upwardly extended end'lying in spaced relation with one end of the pole and having an opening, a neck yoke having band formed with extensions, the extensions having openings to receive the bolt, the free end of the bolt adapted to pass into the opening of the upwardly extended end of the lower section, and said yoke adapted to engage the upper section to restrict movement of the yoke.
2. In a device of the character described, a wagon pole having an opening formed in one end thereof, a spring pressed bolt movv kw) able within the opening, a locking device including an [upper section and :a ilowel' Section, said lower section having an upwardly extended portion disposed in spaced relation with the free end of the pole, said upper section having an upwardly and down wardly extended portion, means for securing the downwardly extended portion to \the lower section, said upwardly extended por tion of the uppensection providing anaRhutinent, :a neck yoke having vmeans cooperating with the sliding bolt to :secure the :neck yoke to the .wagon pole, and said neck yoke adapted-1to engage zth'e' upwardly 5H1'Ld(10\VnWaIdly extended portion of the upper section, to
