To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that VITALIS C. JoHNsoN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Bozeman, in the county of Gallatin and State of Montana, has invented new and useful Improvements in Screed Supports, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the invention is to provide an adjustable device serving as a support for the screed usually employed in concrete and cement work, the invention being designed particularly as a device to replace the ordinary wooden peg ordinarily employed as a Further it is the purpose to provide a device of this kind which, while adjustable, will have the adlinstable means fully protected against the entrance of moisture which is always present in the working of concrete and cement.
With this object in view the invention consists in a construction and combination of parts of which a preferred embodiment is shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure l is a view partly in section showing the application of the invention, the latter, however, being shown in elevation.

Figure 4 is a transverse sectional view on the line 4 4 of Figure 2.
Essentially the invention comprises an adjustable post l mounted on a. base 2 which is designed for attachment by pegs or other suitable fastening devices 3 with the bottom wall 4 of the frame in which the concrete or cement is to be poured, the post being engaged in an appropriate socket formed in the screed 5 so that the latter may be held at thelproper elevation and level for the effcc-tive operation of the straight edge 6. It is of course necessary that the screed be supported at both ends and accordingly two or more 'of the devices are required for each screed, depending on the length of the latter. The upper extremity of the post l entering the socket formed in the screed, the weight of the latter is supported on a shoulder provided by a collar 7 which in the construction illustrated is engaged with the threaded portion 8 of the post at the terminus of the threaded portion and is secured irmly enough on the threaded portion to effect binding' movement of the latter so that there may be no relative or turning movement. lThe threaded portion 8 of the post, however, is adapted for freely turning in the head 9 carried at the top of the tubular column 10 upstanding from the base 2. In order that the screw may be protected` from rust and that moisture may be excluded, the tubular column 10 may be and preferably is filled with an adequate lubricant, preferably medium grease.
As a further means of protection of the screw from moisture, the collar 7 is provided with a tubular member 11 telescoping over the tubular column l0, this tubular member 1l constituting1 a housing for that portion of the screw 8 comprehended between the head 9 and the collar 7, in the adjustment of the device. The tubular member 1l will also be provided with a quantity of grease or other lubricant to prevent the entrance of moisture through the lower end of the tubular member around the column 10.
l/Vhile the grease or lubricant is designed to exclude moisture,` it is obvious that the tubular member `will also exclude grit and thus the screw which is the adjusting means of the device is at all times effectively housed so that it may always be in condition for ready, quick and convenient operation.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new and useful iszl. A device for the purpose described comprising a hollow column, a post having a threaded portion threadingly engaging the head of said column, and a housing carried. by the threaded portion of the post to enclose said threaded portions in all positions of extension of the portion above the head of the column.
2. A device for the purpose indicated comprising a column, a post having a, threaded portion threadingly engaging said co1- umn, and a tubular element carried by the 5 postl and telescoping the column.
3. A device for the purpose indicated comprising hollow column, a post having a threadedv portion threadingly engaging the hea-d of said column, a collar carried by the post and constituting a shoulder for the support of a device enga-ged with the post, and a tubular member depending from the co1- lar and telesooping; the column.
