l/Vhen the roller is rotated when uniieeling the curtain, the clearing tace 16 ot the notch 13 by reason of its engagement with the clearing Jface 29 ot the tooth 27 lifts said pawl out of engagement with the notch and allows the roller to rotate. lit the speed or rotation of the roller is su'ilicient to lreep the pawls in their outermost position, the teeth thereon will pass the notch 13 without engagement therewith, but it the movement is slow, such as is usual when desired to iX the curtain in an adjusted position, the uppermostl of the pawls 25 will drop by gravity into said notch and hold the roller against further rotation.
The straight bar portions 26 or" each of the pawls are ot such length as to overlap the tooth portion of the other pawl sub stantially as shown in Figure 2, thus one pawl reinforces the other and prevents relative lateral movement thereof.
vVith a shade roller constructed sulistantiallv as shown herein and described. the roller can be held in a fixed position each one-half revolution thereoiF and as there are no pivoted pawls or ratchet wheels is common in some types of shade rollers, the same is absolutely noiseless and therefore especially adapted tor use where the slight-- est noise is objectionable, such as in motor vehicles or the like.
Having described our invention, .vhat we claim is:
1. ln a device of the character described; a roller; a head member connected therewith; a bracket; a rod secured in said bracket and held against rotation relatively thereto and having a notch therein, a plurality of pawls having a constant sliding Contact with each other, each oit said pawls having a tooth thereon adav sid notch and hold said roller against rotation in one direction and to be released 'trom said notch by the rotation ot said .roller when moved in the opposite direction, the toothed portion of one ot the pawls bemoved away trom the toothed portion oi" the other of said pawls by centrifugal torce during the rotation of the head member.

4. ln a device ot the character described, a roller; a head member connected therewith having a recess 'therein with two sub-i stantially parallel walls; a bracket; a rod secured in said bracket and held against rotation relatively thereto, having a notch therein; a plurality ot pawls movably mounted within said head member antL adapted to drop into said notch and hold said roller against rotation in one direction and to be released from .said notch by the rotation ot said roller when moving in the opposite direction; said pawls being so arranged that a portion ot one otl said pawls is in constant sliding contact with one oi th:x sides of said recess and a portion ot the other ot said pawls is in contact with the opposite wall thereof.
5. ln a device of the character described, a roller; a head member connected there-- with having a recess therein with two substantially parallel walls; a bracket; a rod secured in said bracket and held against rotation relatively thereto, having a notch therein, a plurality of pawls of less width than said recess movably mounted therein and adapted to drop into said notch and hold said roller against rotation in one rection and to be released from said notch by the rotation o1 said roller when movin@ in the opposite direction; said pawls bei so arranged that portion ot one ot said pawls is in constant sliding contact with one ot the sides ot said recess and a portion ot the other ot said pawls is in contact with the opposite wall thereof.
6. ln a device of the character described, a roller; a head member connected therewith having a recess therein with two substantially parallel walls; a bracket; a rod secured in said bracket and held against rotation relatively thereto, having a notch therein; a plurality ot pawls movably mounted within said recess, each ot less width than said recess and held against lateral movement therein bythe other of said pawls with which it is in constant contact and moved outwardly in opposite dillt) -iac

In a device of the character described, a roller; a head member connected therewith; a bracket; a rod secured in said bracket and held against rotation relatively thereto, having a notch therein; a plurality of pawls having constant sliding contact with each other movably mounted within said head member in opposite directions by centrifugal force, each of the pawls having a tooth thereon that is adapted to drop into said notch and hold said roller against rotation in one direction and to be released from said notch by the rotation of said roller when moving in the opposite direction, each of said pawls having a substantially straight side portion and an osettooth portion at one end having one locking tace and a clearing face extending therefrom at an angle thereto.
8. In a device of the character described, a roller; a head member connected therewith; a cap covering said head member; a
bracket; a rod secured in said bracket and held against rotation relatively thereto, having a notch therein; a plurality of pawls having constant sliding contact` with and movable relatively to each other by centrifugal force within said head member and adapted to drop into said notch and hold said roller against rotation in one direction and to be released from said notch by the rotation of said roller when moving in the opposite direction, said roller, head member and cap `forming a unitary structure.
9. In a device of the character described, a roller; a head member connected therewith having a recess in one side with two substantially parallel walls and a projection upon the Opposite side having similar parallel sides and two round ends, the distance therebetween being substantially the same as that of the inside diameter of said roller by which it is centered; a cap covering one end of said head member and fixed thereto, said roller, head member and cap forming a single unitary structure.
l0. In a device of the character described, a roller; a head member connected therewith having a recess in one side with two substantially parallel walls and a projection upon the opposite side having similar parallel sides and two round ends, the
distance therebetween being substantially the same as that of the inside diameter of said ro-ller by which it is centered; a cap covering one end ofl said head member and fixed thereto, said roller, head member and cap forming a single unitary structure; a rod secured in said bracket and held against rotation relatively thereto, having a notch thereon; a plurality of pawls mounted within saidy recess movable in opposite directions by centrifugal force and at the same time maintaining a constant sliding contact with each other; and a. spring surrounding said rod having connection at one end therewith and at the other end with said head member.

A curtain vroller comprising rotary and stationary elements; means tending to turn .the rotary element; and a pair of pawls carried by theA rotary element and actuated independently therein by gravity and centrifugal force toward and away from each other, but retaining a. constant sliding contact with each other, said pawls and stationary element being provided with shoulders adapted to co-act to prevent turning of the rotary element in one direction.

A curtain roller comprising rotary and stationary elements; means tending to turn the rotary element; twopawlscarried within a recess in the rotary element that move away from the center of said element by centrifugal forceand at the same time maintaining sliding contact with each other during their entire relative movement, each pawl having a tooth thereon adapted to dro-p into the notch in said roller and hold the same against movement in one direction.
13. A curtain roller comprising rotary and stationary elements, means tending to rotate the rotary element in one direction, and a plurality of separate relatively movable pawls having constant contact with each other carried by the rotary element and provided with shoulders, said stationary element being provided with a shoulder adapted to coact with the shoulder on any of the pawls to prevent turning of the elementin the opposite direction.
