D. BOURQUE TOOL FOR USE ON NONCIRCULAR WORK r'lled May 5, 1923 jaktfeniov: flavid Bourgu Patented Oct. 28, 1924.

PATENT DAVID BOURQUE, OF AMESBURY, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO G. W. J'. MURPHY COMBANY,OF AMES'B UR-Y, MASSACHUSETTS, A CORPORATION OF MASSACHUSETTS.
TOOL non use on NONCIRGULAR WORK.
Application filed May 5,
To all whom z't may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID BOUR UE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Amesbury, county of Essex, and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Tools for Use on Noncircular Work, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention relates to tools for operating on non-circular work such, for example, as the parts of turnbutton fasteners which have an elliptical portion and the purpose is to provide a hand tool which will facilitate the proper positioning of such fastener parts or. similar non-circular or asymmetrical elements in relation to the member to which they are attached.
In order that my invention may be more readily understood I have here shown as a specific example thereof a punch for preparing automobile curtains and similar members for the attachment thereto of the eyelets of turnbutton fasteners. The invention will be readily understood from the following description taken in connection. with the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Fig. 1 is a fragmentary edge view of an automobile curtain showing successive steps in the attachment of eyelets thereto and showing the punch in rear end elevation;
Fig. 2 is a front end elevation of the punch; and
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of the punch on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
Referring to Fig. 1 of thedrawings, I have there illustrated a portion of an automobile curtain 5 along the edge of which is to be attached a series of eyelets for turnbutton fasteners such as the eyelets 7 illustrated at the left hand of the figure.
Such eyelets may be of the form shown in the patent to Bourque No. 1,385,039, dated July 19, 1921, embodying a central elliptical opening 9 to embrace the elliptical body of the turnbutton fastener. It will be clear that to give a seemly' appearance to the work and to facilitate the securing together of the fasteners, the axes of the ellipse 9 should be definitely related or oriented to the edge of the curtain as, for instance, in the manner shown by having the major axis parallel thereto. The tool particularly described in the present application is de- 1923. Serial No. 636,977.
signed to prepare the curtain for the appli cation of the eyelets 7 and to permit this work to be done in an expeditious and accurate manner.
Referring to Fig. l, the curtain is prepared by punching therefrom an opening 11 corresponding to the opening 9 in the eyelet and a series of openings 13 about the same to receive the securing prongs of the eye' let and these openings must be definitely oriented to the edge of the curtain. Reading from right to left of the figure the curtain may be provided with center marks 15 where the eyelets are to be positioned and the openings are formed at these locations by means of the punch 17 and the eyelet finally inserted. It will be understood that in the customary operation the entire series of center marks are made and then the entire series of openings punched and finally the eyelets inserted but the several steps have been illustrated, one beside the other, in Fig. l.
The punch 17 is shown more in detail'in Figs. 2 and 3 and may embody a stock, on one end face 19 of which is provided the annular cutting blade 21 adapted. to form the opening 11 and around which are arranged the cutting blades 23 which cut the prong-receiving slits or openings 13. The right hand end of the stock viewing Fig. 3
provides a handle and the other end'face may be struck with a mallet or other tool to form the openings. The annular blade 21 is conveniently supported by a slidable block 25 fitting within the same and normally pressed to the left in Fig. 3 by the spring 27. In the punching operation this part yields as will be well understood and as the punch is removed it serves as an ejector for clearing the blade of. the portion. of the curtain punched out from the opening 11.
It will be seen by reference to Fig. 1 that from the point of view of the operator using the punch the cutting blades and the work are hidden. The important feature of the invention is the provision of means whereby the operator may position the punch and properly orient it so that the openings formed thereby will be in a proper angular position relative to the work. In the example of the invention illustrated the purpose is to dispose the major axis of the opening 11 parallel to the edge of the curtain and to facilitate this the stock may be provided With a lateral projection herein shown as a relatively long arm 27 extending from the side thereof preferably closely adjacent to end face 19 and extending in the direction of the major axis of the ellipse. As Will be apparent from Fig. 1, this arm 27 serves as a guide and may be brought parallel With the edge of the curtain 5, the length thereof rendering it easy to recognize any inaccurate position of the punch and the punch can thus be quickly positioned and the hole accurately made.
To further facilitate the positioning and orientation of the punch it is preferably provided With a positioning element Which may serve a pivot on which the tWo may be turned prior to the actual punching operation properly to orient it With the Work. Herein there is provided. centrally of the ejector block 25 a point 29 which preferably takes the form of a spindle slidably mounted on the block25 and normally held projected beyond the face of the cutter '21 bythe spring 31. In the operation of the punch it may be presented to the Work in somewhat angular position and the point 29 applied to the center mark 15, thus properly locating the hole Which is to be made. The punch may then be brought erect to punching position and the point 29 Will serve-as a pivot about which it may be swung While the operator observes the tool from the point of view shown in Fig. 1 and properly orients it with the edge of the curtain With the aid of the laterally extended arm 27. The punching operation is then effected and the openings 11 and 13 formed, as also shown in Fig. 1, in exact posit-ion and in accurate angular relation to the Work.
I have here described the orientation as effected by bringing the arm into parallelism With the edge of curtain 5. Obviously a temporary guide line might be utilized, for instance, a chalk line joining the center points 15, and in the latter case the arm 2? could be brought into alignment with such line.
I have described in detail a particular embodiment of my invention but it Will be understood that the principles thereof may be embodied in many different mechanical forms and that the particularity of the description herein has been for the purpose of making the particular embodiment illustrated more readily comprehensible and not) for the purpose of defining the scope of the invention. lVhat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent I shall express in the following claims.
