To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HARRY E. MOCAND- LEss, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Detachable Toilet Seats for .lnfants, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to an infants toilet seat, and has for its purpose to provide a structure of this character which is readily attachable to or removable from the conventional toilet seat.

A more particular object of my improvement is to provide a construction that permits of quickly and firmly attaching an infants toilet seat in place on a permanent seat, eliminating danger of the infants seat being accidentally displaced.

A further purpose of the invention is to enable detach-ably securing an infant-s toilet seat in place, withoutthe necessity of marring the permanent seat to which it is attached, or permanently securing any attaching devices to the latter.

An additional object of my improvement is to provide a structure including an automatic clamping member that engages the permanent fseat'and holds the temporary seat in place-fthereon, the clamping member being operated by the elevating or lowering of the cover portion on the temporary seat. c, The invention also includes certain other improved features, all of which will appear clearlyfrom the following description when read in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, the novel features beingpointedout'in the claims following the description.

Referring more particularly to the drawings, in which like reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the. several;

views, 1 designates a conventional form of permanent toilet seat to which the infants temporary seat is attached when desirable. The structure constituting my invention includes a seat portion'2 and a cover portion 3, which parts are connected by hinges comprising the leaves 4 attached to the cover portion and leaves 5 attached to the seat por tion. bottom corner of its rear edge as shown at 6, to receive the barrel portions 7 of the hinge, so that when the cover portion is in its vertical position, as illustrated in Figure The cover portion isrecessed at the 1, its rear edge 8 engages the upper surface of theseat portion, and prevents the cover portion from being forced too far backwardly when opening.

' The device is held engaged with a permanent seat or support 1, principally by a clamping member including a clamping portion9 that engages the seat 1 and an operating portion 10. The clamping member is formed of a single piece ofmetal bent. upon itself to afford said clamping portion 9 and the operating portion 10, and to pivotally engage a supporting element preferably in the form of a rod 11, the ends of which are "held in place by suitable attachin devices 12. The'clamping member is he (1 in proper pivotal relation with the supporting element ll by means ofrintegal lugs 13 struck from the" operating portion 10 and engaging said supporting element, as shown in Figure 7, while 14 isla spring of suitable formation with its ends held by the attaching devices 12 to the underside of the seat portion, said spring engaging the'operating portion 10 of the clamping member and functioning to retain. the latter normally against the seat portion, as shownin Figure 3, with the clamping'mem'ber i-n releasing position.

The clamping member is operated automatically by the cover portion, which when elevated moves it to clamping position, and when lowered permits the spring 14 to actuate it to releasing position. This is prefen ably accomplished throu h the instrumentality' of a pin 15, slidab 'y'. arranged in the seat portion with its upper end in the path of therear edge of the cover portion, so that gas the latter is elevated, the pin 15 is depressed. The cups 18 are arranged at the forward part of the seat portion, andeach includes a shank 19 provided with annular ribs 20. The shank 19 engages a recess 'in the seat portion, and the cup is held: in place by suitable cement, which forms atight interlocking connection with the ribs 20 on the shank.

The seat is applied in the manner shown in Figure 3, first pressing the forward part downwardly against the permanent seat, causing the suction cups 18 to adhere thereto. Following this, the cover portion 3 is elevated as in Figure 1, causing the clampingmember to tightly engage the under side of the permanent seat, as shownin'Figure 1. It is desirable that when the cover por-- tion 3 is elevated, it be automatically locked in such position to prevent accidental lowering, and to' accomplish this I employ connectmg bars 21 and 22 p-ivotally connected to each other at 23, the bars 21 being pivoted to the cover portion at 24: and bars'22 pivoted to the seat portion at 25. To this en the locking bar 26 is pivoted to the bar 22and is slotted at 27 to engage a pin28 on the bar 21. Theslot 27 has a vertically. extending recess or; pocket 29 at its outer end to engage the pin 28, and when-the cover is elevated to its uppermost position,

the slot 27 slides along the pin 28 until the, latter is reached by the recess 29; whereupon the bar 26 drops to the position shown in Fis 1 andlB, withthe pin 28 at the top of the recess 29. lln'this position, the locking bar prevents the cover portion 3 from being moved forwardly, and to permit such movement, the locln'ng bar 26 must first be elevated to pegmit the pin 28 to reengage the slot 27, after which the cover portion can be lowered.

The invention is susceptible of various chan es and modifications without departingrom the novel features herein disclosed, and forming the basis of my improvements, and this application is intended to cover any such departures as may come within the intended scope of my invention -or of the following claims.

3 I claim:

1. In an infants toilet seat, the combination with a seat portion and a cover portion,

13. In an infants toilet-seat, the combination with a seat portion, of a clamping member at the rear of the seat portion for engaging the underside of a support, and suction retaining cups at the front of-the seat portion for engaging the upper side of said support.
