JOHN G. REAGAN, OF 'GISGO, TEXAS.
HEAnEn BLOCK. 1
Application filed June 3,
To all w/romit may concern: 7
Be it known that I, JOHN G. REAGAN, a citizen of the United States, residin at Cisco, in the county of Eastland and gtate of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Header Blocks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in-header blocks.
lhe object of the invention is to provide a header block for forming the edges of streets or roads; a particular feature being the provision of a block for. constructing an edge which will be monolithic with the surfacing of the street or road, rather than Another ob'ec-t is to provide such a block which is constructed so as not to be displaced from the road by the settling action of the latter.
A construction designed to carry out the invention will be hereinafter described together with other features of the invention.
The invention will be more readily understood from a reading of the following specification and by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which an example of the invention is shown and wherein:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a portion of a road structure having an edge formed of header blocks constructed in accordance with my invention, and
Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspective view of In the drawings the numeral 10 designates an upright plastic structure constituting a header block embodying my invention. The outer portion of the block is provided with an upstanding retaining lug 11, the inner side of which forms an abutment face 12; while that portion of the block opposite said lug constitutes a shoulder 13 for receiving the marginal portion of the road surfacing which is preferablyformed of brick, as is shown in Fig. 1. owever, it is to be understood that tie surfacing may he formed of wooden blocks or of any other suitable material. A transverse seat 14 is provided between said shoulder and lug for receiving one or more steel rods 15 extending longitudinally of the road for holding the blocks in alinement. The block is preferably made with an outwardly inclined or an i g bo t m 6, b t it is to be und r:

right-anglesfto the sides, if desired. By
meansof an inclined bottom the block tends to wedge into the foundation of the road, thereby preventing separation of the edge and surfacing when the road settles.
In constructing a street or road the header blocks are embedded in the foundation at the edge of the road, as is shown in Fig. l. The longitudinal rod or ,rods 15, is grouted in the seats 14, whereby the blocks are connected and held in alinement. 'The bricks forming the surfacing are laid transversely so that the outer portions of the end bricks rest upon the shoulders 13 of the blocks and abut the faces 12 of the retaining lugs. per faces 11 of said lugs are substantially flush with the surface of the brick. By laying the brick or other surfacing upon the header blocks in this manner, the road edge becomes monolithic with the surfacing and forms an integral part of the road. It is pointed out that the slanting bottoms 16, cause the blocks to wedge into the foundation of the road, thereby preventing the edge and surfacing from separating by the settling action of the road. 7
Various changes inthe size and shape of the block, as well as modifications, may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What I claim is:
1. A precast header block for roads comprising an upright body having an upwardly projecting rectangular retaining. lug ex tending outwardly from the central portion of the body, a supporting shoulder below the top of the lug extending inwardly from the central portion of the block toform an adequate seat for a road surfacing.
2. A pre-cast header block adapted to be embeddedin the ground, the outer portion of said block forming an upstanding retaining lug, the innerportion thereof form" ing a shoulder below said lug for receiving the marginal portion of the road surfacing said block having a transverse seat between said lug and shoulder for receiving a con-' necting member extending longitudinally of the road for holding the headerblocks in 'alinement.

bottom the outer portion of said structure forming an upstanding retaining lug, the inner portion forming a shoulder below said lug for receiving the marginal portion of the road surfacing.
4. In a pre-cast header block, an upright lug for receiving the marginal portion of the road surfacing, a transverse seat being provided between said lug and shoulder for receiving a connecting member extend- 7 ing longitudinally of the road. 7
5. The combination With a road of an edge structure composed of a plurality of pre-cast. header blocks embedded in the ground each having its upper inner portion cut down to provide a shoulder for receiving the 'inarginal portion of the road surfacing, and a connecting member extending longitudinally of the road for tying the blocks together.
In testimony whereof I allix my signa ture. 7
JOHN G. REAGAN.
