DOOR LATCH.
Application led September 11, 1922. vSerial No. 587,444.
To all 'whom t may concern.
Be it known that I, WiLLrAM C. DEvER- EAUX, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the county of' Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door Latches, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention relates to door latches and has particular reference to latches for use in metallic vehicle doors. One of the objects of the invention is the provision of a simple latch construction comprising but few parts which may be cheaply manufactured. Another object is the provision of a curved pivoted lever engagea-ble with a shoulder upon the sliding bolt and arranged at right angles to its axis, this lever having a convex bearing on the inner side of its curve engageable with the shoulder to move the bolt longitudinally in one direction upon rotation of the lever in one. direction. A further object is to provide a bearing upon the latch for the o-uter end' of the operating' shank of the latch handle. Other objects of the invention reside inthe novel features of construction and combinations and arrange-- ments of parts as more fully hereinafter set forth.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a door with my latch applied;
Figure 2 is a cross section on the line 2,-2 of Figure l;
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the latch;
Figure 4 4is va cross section on the line 4 4 of Figure 1. l
1 is the metallic vehicle door having the inner and outer panels 2 and 3 respectively. 4 is the latch of this door having the case plate 5 with the transversely extending flange 6 at its forward edge and the channel-shaped cover plate 7 which cooperates with the case plate to guide the longitudinally movable bolt 8 and inclose the coil spring 9. The nose of the bolt 8 extends through the transverse flange 6 and the coil spring abuts the inner end of the bolt and the transverse end flange 10 of the cover plate.
11 is a lever pivoted to the case plate at its lower end vand extendingbetween parallel shoulders 12' and 13 formed in the bolt 8. 14.- is a rotatable hub member journalled between the case plate/,2 and the laterally extending flange 15 upon the cover plate 7, this hub member having a'por'tion engageable with the lever 11 to rotate they same rearwardly about its pivot upon corresponding rotation of the operating shank 16 nonrotatably secured at its inner end in the hub member and to the outer end' of which is secured the door handle 17. To permit of using parallel shoulders upon the bolt which extend at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the bolt, thereby decreasing the cost of production, and at the same time to permit of using an actuating lever which is curved, this lever 11 has intermediate its ends and on the inner side of its curve the convex bearing portion 18 which is engageable with the shoulder 12 of thev bolt.-
To normally retain the actuating lever 11 and the hub member 14 in inoperative position, I have provided the flat substantially U-shaped spring 19, one end of which abuts the edge of the lever 11 atl the inner. side of its curve and the other end of Which abutS the transverse lower side flange of the cover plate 7, the rounded cr base portion' of this spring being pivoted about the tongue 20 formed in the lower flange by cutting parallel slots therein. l
They channel-shaped cover plate 7 is preferably formed of sheet metal and is secured to the case plate 5 by lugs upon the transverse end and side flanges as well as the laterally extending flange which extends through the case plate and are clinched thereover.
To form a bearing for the operating shank 16, I have provided the yoke 21 having the foot flanges secured to the laterally extending flange 15 and base of the channel-sha ed cover plate 7. This yoke is provided Wit 1 a cylindrical threaded flange 22 in alignment with the opening through the lateral flange 15 and case plate 2 for the passage of the operating shank. 23 is a bearing 1n which the operating shank is rotatably mounted at its outer end, this bearing threadedly engaging the threaded cylindrical flange and extending outwardly beyond the outer panel 3 of the door 1.` The operating shank is journalled at its inner end by reason of the fact that it is non-rotatably secured in the rotatable h ub member 14 which in turn is. journalled 1n the lateral flange 15 and case` plate 2. Thus, it is seen that with this a'rrangement separated aligned bearings upon the latch are formed for the operating shank of the door handle. Also, that the outer hearing may be attached after the .door has been enamelled and baked so that its nish will not be marred.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. In a door latch, the combination 'with a case plat-e, of a longitudinally slidable bolt, a cover plate cooperating with said case plate to guide said bolt, said cover plate having a tongueformed therein, a lever pivoted to said case plate and engageable with said bolt to move the same in one direc-tion, and a substantially U-shaped spring having one end engageable with said lever to hold the same normally in inoperative-position, and the other end engageable with said cover plate, the base of said spring extending around said tongue.
2. In a door latch, the combination with the case plate,'of a longitudinally slidable bolt, a cover plate secured to said case plate and cooperating therewith to guide said bolt, said cover plate having a laterally extending ange spaced from said case plate,
a lever pivoted to said case plate and engageable with said bolt to move the same in one. direction, a rotatable member journalled betweensaid case plate and laterally extending flange and engageable with said lever to actuate the same, an operating shank in engagement with said rotatable -member and a yoke upon said'cover plate and provided with a bearing spaced from,-
said rotatable member for said operating shanki- L3. In a door latch, the combination with the case plate, of a longitudinally slidable bolt, a channel shaped cover platesecured to said case plate and cooperating therewith to guide said bolt, said cover plate having a laterally extending flange spacedl from said case plate, a lever pivoted to said case plate and engageable with saidboltto-move the same 1n one direction, a rotatable member between said laterally extendingtlange and case plate and journalled therein for .actuating said lever, an operating shank engaging said rotatable member, and a yoke having foot flanges secured to the base of said cover plate and to said laterally extending ange and provided with a bearing for said operating shank.
