To all whom t 'may concern Be it known that I, HARRY H. Violines, a citizen of the United States, residing in Corona, Leng Island, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Typewriting Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to sheet-collating means, and is in the nature of an improvement on the application of J. A. B. Smith, Seri-al No. 476,422, filed June 10, 1921.
In said application, provision is made of sheet-controlling means for use in work in which data, typed on statement-sheets and ledger-sheets, is recorded upon a single record-sheet which is of considerable lengh and is left in the machine while statement-sheets and ledger-sheets relating to accounts of different customers are inserted, typed upon and removed. The statement-sheet and ledger-sheet are inserted at the front of the platen and collated on the table beneath which the record-sheet is directed. In the collating operation, the statement-sheet and the ledger-sheet, which is usually wider than the former, are adjusted with their left edges against the left side-edge gage, yand the ledger-sheet is clamped in position beneath the statement-sheet by a clamp at the .left edge of the collating table, the engaging portion of the clamp being flat, so as to lie between the two sheets and having a very slight movement to and from effective position so as not to interfere with the statement-sheet. The clamp-operat-ing means eX- tends a substantial distance to the left of the left side-edge gage and necessitates a loss of space at that side of the collating table, one effect being to prevent the left auxiliary feed-roll for the record-sheet from being placed as close to the gage as desired.
According to the presentpinvention, provision is made of an improved clamp and clamp-operating means by which such sacritice of space is obviated'.
In the embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, a fiat engaging finger extends inwardly, through an aperture in the left side-edge gage, from the lower edge and the forward end of a lever pivoted intermediate its ends ou the side-edge gage. able linger-piece or handle to actuate the clamp or to release it.
Provision may be made of a plate secured to the left side-edge gage, and the lever, cam and handle may be held substantially flat along the outside of said plate. Adjacent the handle, the plate may have a downward projection in the form of a sector having the pivot of the handle as its center and provided with a stop at its lower edge to limit the downward movement of the handle.

A platen 11 is mounted on an aXle 12 ournaled in the ends 13 of a platen-frame 14` which comprises a rear paper-table 15 and a rod 16 connecting the ends 13.
To support the collating device above the platen, brackets 17 are secured on the tops of the ends 13 of the platen-frame by suitable meaus, such as screws 18. and connected by rods 19 and 2O engaging grooves 21 and 22` respectively, of plates 23 pivotally mounted on the rod 16. It will be seen that the rods 19 and 20 serve to prevent rotation of the plates 23 about the rod 16. Attached te lugs 24, extending leftwardly from each of the plates 23, by screws 25, is a bar 26 en which are mounted sections 27 and 28 of a collating table designated in general by 29. Preferably, the sections 27 and 28 are secured to the bar 26 by screws 27a extending through slots 28a and threaded into the bar, the sect-ions 27 and 28 being countersunk at 29a around the slots, so that the heads of the screws 27a will lie beneath the front surfaces of the sections 27 and 28, and, consethe lower edge of the lever at its front end through an opening provided therefor in the gage, and means to actuate said lever including apivotally mounted eccentric fitting in a slot extending longitudinally of the lever.

A collating device comprising, in combination, a sheet-supporting member, a sideedge gage projecting therefrom, a lever eX- tending along the outer side of the gage and pivotally supported thereon, a clamping device including a flat Enger extending from the lower edge of the lever at its front end through an opening provided therefor in the gage, means to acuate said lever including a pivotaily mounted eccentric fitting into a slot extending longitudinallyT of the lever, and an operating handle for said eccentric.

A collating device comprising, in combination, a sheet-supporting member, a sideedge gage projecting therefrom, a lever eX- tending along the outer side of the gage and pivotally supported thereon, a clamping device including a flat finger extending from the lower edge of the lever at its front end through an opening in the gage, and means including a cam for shifting said lever.
5. A collating device comprising, in conibination, a sheet-supporting member, a sithv`- edge gage projecting therefrom, a flat inember secured to the outer side of said gage, a lever pivoted on said member, a flat lever lying along said gage, and a flat finger substantially parallel to said member and efr.- tending from the front end of the lever through an opening in the gage adjacent said supporting member.

A collating device comprising, in combination, a sheet-supporting member, a sideedge gage projecting therefrom, a flat member secured to the outer side of said gage, a lever pivoted on said memb r a fiat lever having a Hat linger extending from its front end through an opening in the gage adjacent said supporting member, and man-- ually-operable actuating means mounted on said flat member.
7 A collating device comprising, in combination, a sheet-supporting member, a sideedge gage projecting therefrom, a flat meinber secured to the outer side of said gage, a stop on said fiat member, a lever pivoted on the outer side of said member and limited in its movement by said stop, a flat finger extending through an opening in said gage adjacent said supporting member, and operating means for said lever mounted on said flat member.
8. A collating device comprising, in combination, a sheet-supporting member, a sideedge gage projecting therefrom, a flat finger to engage said supporting member adjacent the gage, and controlling means for said finger mounted on the outer side of the gage,
comprising members movable substantially in a plane parallel to the outer face of the gage so as to economize space laterally of the gage.
9. In a typewriting machine, in combination, a platen, a platen-frame, a collating ktable abovesaid platen, a side-edge gage at one edge of said table, auxiliary rolls to press against the platen, on opposite sides of the table, a record-sheet, and means to clamp a work-sheet on said table adjacent said gage, comprising a flat finger extending through said gage and having a movement toward and from said table, so slight as not to interfere with a work-sheet passing there over, and finger-actuating means comprising members supported at thel outside of said gage and movable substantially in planes parallel to said gage, so that the auxiliary roll at the adjacent end of the platen .may be positioned close to said gage.
13. A collating device comprising, in combination,va sheet-supporting member, and a clamping device pivoted to swing about an axis parallel to the platen-axle, Vco-operating with the sheet-supporting member to clamp a sheet and to permit another sheet to be gaged by a gage on the collating device while the clai'npiug device is in clamping position.
14. A collating device comprising, in combination, a feed-roll, a sheet-clamping member alongside said feed-rolt in close proximity thereto, and means extending upward from the clamping member to swing the clamping member whereby the clamping member may be operated without interfering with the feed-roll.
15. A collating device comprising, in comvbination, a sheet-supporting member, an
edge gage, a clamping member pivotally mounted on the edge gage to swing in a path substantially parallel to the edge gage, and means mounted on the edge gage for operating the clamping member.
16. A collating device comprising, in combination, a sheet-supporting member, an edge gage projecting therefrom, a lever pivoted to said edge gage to swing in a plane parallel to the gage and having a clamping face formed upon it, and means mounted on the edge gage to operate the lever.
17. A collating device comprising, in combination, a sheet-supporting member having an edge gage projecting therefrom, a clamp ing member for co-operation with the sheetsupporting member, a lever for moving the clamping member to and from clamping position, and means on the edge gage to limit the movement of the lever in the direction to carry the clamping member away from clamping position.
18. A collating device comprising, in combination, a sheet-supporting member, an edge gage, and means to clamp. a sheetof paper upon the supporting member, including thin plate lever having one end bifurcated and f. jhtly offset and the other end slightly offset in the opposite direction and formed 'with a plate-like clan'iping extension at right angles to the niainbody of the lever, said lever being pivoted intermediate its ends upon the edge gage.
19. A collating device comprising, in combination, a sheet-sujiporting member, an edge gage, and means to clamp a sheet of paper upon the supporting member, consisting of thin plate-like members mounted on the edge for swingingmovement in paths which are parallel to the edge gage.
20. A collating device comprising, in con bination, a sheet-supporting member, an edge gage, a lever carrying a clampingmeinber, mounted on the edge gage, and means for positively controlling the movement of the lever to and from clamping position.
21. In a typewriting machine, a platen. a collating table above the platen at the delivery side thereof, consisting of two separate sections adjustable toward and from each other, said sections being' cut away in the upper part, a side-edge gage on one of the sections, an adjustable feed-roll bearing against the platen to ride upon the protruding margin of a wide inside sheet, and a clamp on the edge-gage constructed to occupy the least possible space widthwise of the machine, to enable the feed-roll to be .located close to the collating table.
