  • This invention relates to a wire attaching machine designed primarily for use in connection with the manufacture of collapsible barrel bodies, but it is to be understood that a wire attaching machine, in accordance with this invention, can be employed for any purposes for which it is found applicable, and the inventionihas for its object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a machine ofsuch class having means for eX- peditiously stapling'to a collapsible barrel body, in proximity to each end thereof, a length of wire for connecting together the end terminal portions of the staves of the barrel body and with each length of wire having free end terminal portions for connection'together by twisting or otherwise, for the purpose of :maintaining the barrel body in closed position when desired.

WIRE-ATTACHING MACHINE.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT J. MCCLENNY, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wire-Attaching h'lachines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a wire attaching machine designed primarily for use in connection with the manufacture of collapsible barrel bodies, but it is to be understood that a wire attaching machine, in accordance with this invention, can be employed for any purposes for which it is found applicable, and the inventionihas for its object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a machine ofsuch class having means for eX- peditiously stapling'to a collapsible barrel body, in proximity to each end thereof, a length of wire for connecting together the end terminal portions of the staves of the barrel body and with each length of wire having free end terminal portions for connection'together by twisting or otherwise, for the purpose of :maintaining the barrel body in closed position when desired.
A furtherobject of the invention is to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a wire attaching machine including means for synchronously connecting to the end terminal portions of a collapsible barrel body lengths of wire for connecting the staves of the barrel body together.
Further objects of the invention are to provide a wire attaching machine, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, which is comparatively simple in its construction and arrangenient, strong, durable, thoroughly eflicient and convenient in its use, readily as sembled and comparatively inexpensive to set up.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as hereinaftermore specifically described and illustrated inthe accompanying drawings, wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which come within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.

A wire attaching machine, in accordance with this invention comprises a supporting frame, a barrel holding and revolvingmechanism supported thereby, operating means therefor, a pair of staple forming and driving mechanisms supported by the frame and arranged in operative relation with respect to the barrel holding and revolving mechanism, operating means for each of said staple formin'giand driving mechanisms, a staple wire feeding mechanism associated with each of said staple forming and driving mechanisms, a common operating means for said staple wire feeding mechanisms, a pair of staple clenching mechanisms and each 'coacting with "a staple forming and driving mechanism, operating means for each of said staple clenching mechanisms, a pair of connecting wire feeding mechanisms each co-acting with a staple forming and driving mechanism, an operating means for each of said staple clenching mechanisms, a common driving means for said several operating means, a barrel body locking mechanism coacting withthe barrel body holding and revolving mechanism, and adjustable supporting means for each of said several mechanisms.
The supporting frama-The said frame includes a pair of triangular-shaped standards 1, 2, and each of which has its lower end formed with foot pieces 8. The standards 1, 2, are connected together by a pair of spaced parallel bars 4, secured therewith near the lower end thereof. The apex of each of the standards is in the form of a vertically disposed rectangular socket 5 and into each of said sockets projects the end terminal portion of a combined coupling and supporting head bar 6, whioh 'is positioned on edge and is of substantial thickness. The end terminal portions of the bar 6 are fixedly secured to the upper ends of the standards 1, 2, by the hold-fast devices 7, and which are so set up as to permit of the bar 6 being disconnected from the standards if desired. The sock'ets 5 are formed by bifurcating the upper ends of the standards 1, 2, and said standards 1, 2, have inwardly extending por tions to provide a bearing of substantial length for the lower edge of the bar 6. The standards 1, 2, have their side'edges formed with inwardly extending flanges 9 for the purpose of reinforcing the standards.
The standard 1, intermediate its ends, is provided with an opening 10, and surrounding the opening 10, on the inner face of the standard 1, is a boss 11.
The standard-1, as well as the standard 2, in proximity to the lower end thereof, is provided with a pair of inwardly extending lugs 12, 18, which oppose each other and are arranged in spaced relation. Extending between each pair of lugs is the end terminal portion of a lower combined coupling and supporting bar 14, which also constitutes a track for-a pair of supporting members 15, 16, which can be adjustably shifted to the desired position upon the bar 14. The end terminal portions of the bar 14 are fixedly secured to the lugs 12, 18, by the hold-fast devices ,17. After the member 16 has been adjusted to the desired position, it is fixed, but the member 15 is shiftable on the bar 14 by a locking mechanism to-be hereinafter referred to.
The member 15 has an enlarged rectangular lower end 18, and the member 16 is also formed with an enlarged rectangular lower end 19; The bar 14 is positioned on edge and the enlarged lower ends of the members 18, 19, are arranged against one face of the bar 14. r
The enlarged lower end 18 of the bar 15, as well as the enlarged lower end 19 of the bar 16, are'constructed alike, and the man ner in which said ends are set up is shown in Figures 2 and 8, and each of said. ends has its inner face cut away to provide a pocket 20 into which is'seated the bar 14,.whereby the ends will overlap the bar 14 at the top and bottom edges thereof. By providing the pockets 20, the said ends seat on the top edge of the bar 14.
The end 18 of the member 15, as well as the end 19 of the member 16, are coupled to the bar 14 in the same manner as shown in Figures 2 and 8. For the purpose of coupling each of said ends, a rectangular plate 21 is provided and which is positioned against the other face of the bar 14. The plate 21 is detachably connected to the end 18, or the end 19, by a series of detachable hold-fast devices 22, arranged above and below the bar 14.
The barrel body holding and resolving mechanismt-The said mechanism is arranged within the supporting frame and is supported, as Well as the clenching mechanisms, from the members 15 and 16 and also from the standard 1. The barrel body holding and revolving mechanism is for the purpose of positioning the barrel body to receive the stapled lengths of wire, and for revolving said barrel body during the posi tioning of the lengths of wire, as well as the stapling of such lengths to the barrel body. The barrel body holding and revolving mechanism includes a pair of revolvable holder elements one of said elements being shiftable lengthwise with respect to the direction of the length of the machine for the purpose of clamping the collapsible body 28 between said elements, so that the body 28 will be carried by said elements during the revolving thereof. The revolving movement of the holder elements is intermittent and the manner in which this is accomplished will be presently referred to. One of said holder elements is referred to generally by 105 the reference character 24 and the other of said holder elements referred to generally by the reference character 25. The holder elements are so set up as to include provision for supporting barrels of different diam- 110 eters.
The holder element 24 comprises a sleeve 26, provided intermediate its ends with a laterally extending annular flange 27, and said sleeve 26, at its inner end, is provided with 115 a laterally extending annular flange 28. Formed integral with the inner face of the flange 28 is an annular supporting head 29, having formed integral with the marginal portion of its outer face a laterally project- 12 ing band 80, which in connection with the outer edge of the head 29 provides an annular shoulder 81 and an annular supporting ledge 82. Detachably connected to the head 29 is an annular gripper member 88, which 125 is positioned against the shoulder 80 and seated on the ledge 82. The peripheral edge of the gripper member 88 is bevelled, as at 84, and WlllCll is adapted to engage the bevels at the outer terminal portions on thein- 1 nei' ates -of the 'staves ,ofthe barrel body asfshown inlFig'ure 1. The gripper member 33 is 'det'achably connected in position by the removable hold-fast devices 35, and by this arrangement, gripper members of different diameters can be employed so that the holder elements can be used in connection with barrel bodies of difl'erent diameters.

Staple clenching mechamz'sm,Two of these mechanisms are employed, one arranged in proximity to the inner face of the holder element 24 and the other positioned in proximity to the inner face of the holder element 25. Each of the staple clenching mechanisms comprises a collar 51, having formed integral therewith a vertically disposed guide 52 for a reciprocatory clenching'tool 53, and said tool 53 is positioned in the path of the staple so that when it passes through a stave it will be engaged by the tool 53 and the inner end of the staple clenched to fixedly secure the staple to the stave. The tool 53 extends above and below the [guide 52 and has connected therewith an oscillatory arm 54, for the purpose of reciprocating it. The arm 54, at its lower end, is pivotally connected by a pin 55 to a collar 56, which is keyed to the operating shaft of the mechanism and with the collar 56 arranged inwardly with respect to the collar 51. The operating shaft for one of the clenching mechanisms is-indicated at 57 and the operating shaft for the other clenching mechanism is indicated at 58. The collar 51 of one of the clenching mechanisms is keyed to the inner end of the 'sleeve'39, as at 59, and the collar 51 of the other clenching mechanism is keyed to the inner end of the sleeve 40. The collar 51, which is keyed to the sleeve 39 is overlapped by the head 29 of the holding element 24, and the collar 51 which is keyed to the sleeve 40 is overlapped bythe head 37 of the holding element 25.
The collars 51 are set up with respect to the sleeves 39 and40 and the sleeves 26 and 36, in the manner as illustrated with respect to the sleeves 26 and 39, shown in Figure 1.
The shaft 57 is of greater length than the sleeve 39, is mounted, wi'thi-nsaid sleeve and projects from each end thereof, and on the projecting inner end of the shaft 57 is secured a collar 56. The outer'end'o f theshaft 57 carries an eccentric 60, which is secured tothe shaft 57 for the purpose of-operating it. Retaining means 61 is employed 't'oprevent the eccentric from sli-ppingofl the outer end ofthe/shaft'57.
The'shaft 58 is not only of greater length than the shaft 57, but also ofg reater length than the sleeve 40. The shaft 58 projects inwardly fromthe sleeve 40, as well as outwardly with respect thereto, and the inner end of thesha-i t 58 carries acollar 56. The shaft 58 projects outwardly from the standard 1 and also through an eccentric 62 and the extended hub 63015 the eccentric 62. The outer end of the hub 63 has keyed therewith a collar 64, which is seated in the opening 10. The shaft 58 has a-key '66 for-the purpose of connecting it to the eccentric 62 and hub 63. Secured to the boss 11 and interposed therebetween and the eccentric 62, is a bearing for the hub 63. The shaft 58 is lengthwise shiftablethrough the eccentric 62 and hub 63 when the holding element 25 is shifted to or from clamping position.
The sup-porting member 15 is shiftable upon the bar 14 for the purpose of moving the holding element 25 to and from clamping position, and when the member 15 is shifted on the bar 14, the holding element 25 and the clenching mechanism which is arranged in proximity to the inner face of'said holding element is carried with the member 15. As the collar of such clenching mechanism is keyed to the sleeve 40, and as the sleeve 40 is keyed to the bearing 47, and as the collar 56 of such clenching mechanism 7 abuts against the sleeve 40, it is obvious that when the member 15 is moved towards or from the. standard 1 the shaft 58, holding element 25 and clenching mechanism will be carried therewith. The adjustment in the foregoing particular is had for thepurpose of clampingthe barrel body 23 between the holding elements 24 and 25 and also to enable the securing or clamping of barrel bodies of different lengths between the holding elements 24 and 25, and further so that the clenching mechanism which is arranged in proximity to the inner face of the. holding element 25, will be at all times, when the holding element is in clamping position, arranged to operate upon the inner end of the staple for the purpose of clenching said inner end.
The eccentric 60 which operates the shaft 57, is connected by a rod 67 to an eccentric 68, carried by the shaft 45, and the eccentric 62, which operates the shaft 58, is connected by a rod 69 to an eccentric 70, carried by the shaft 45. The eccentrics 68 and 70 are adj ustab-ly connected to the shaft 45. The eccentric 44 is also adjustably connected to the shaft 45.
Barrel body locking mecham'sm.-This mechanism coacts with the supporting member 15 for locking it in position after it has been shifted to move the holding element 25 to clamp the barrel body 23 between said element 25 and the element 24, and such looking mechanism consists of an actuating lever 71 attached to a rock shaft 72, which has projecting inwardly therefrom an arm 73, pivotally connected, as at 74, to a link 75, which is also pivotally connected, as'at 76, to a lug 77 projecting from the member 15. \Vhen the lever 71 is moved to the position shown in Figure 1, the holding element is locked in clamping position. Now by swinging'the lever 71 towards the standard 1, the joints between the links 75 and arms 73 and lug 77 are broken, causing'the shifting of the supporting member 15 towards said standard 1, whereby the holding element 25 will be moved out of clamping position and which will enable the barrel body 23 to be removed.
Staple forming and driving 'lflOhdl'LiM-Sr Two of these mechanisms are employed and each coacts with a clenching mechanismand is arranged in superposed relation to the clenching mechanism, as well as exteriorly of the barrel body 23. The clenching mecha-' nism is arranged within the barrel body 23. Each of the staple forming and driving mechanisms is carried by an adjustable hanger, which is also employed for support ing the reel of staple wire, and the reel of connecting wire, as well as the feeding mech anism for the staple wire. The adjustable hanger is shiftably mounted on the head bar 6 and consists of an upright arm 78, provided in its rear face, at its upper end, with a pocket 79 for the reception of the head 6, whereby the arm 7 8 will be supported from the bar 6. The upper wall of the pocket 7 9 is seated upon the top edge of the bar 6, and the lower wall of the pocket'78 bears against the lower'edge of the bar 6. The arm 78 is detachably connected with the bar 6 by a coupling plate 80 and a series of removable hold-fast devices 81, and by this arrangement the arm 7 8 isadjustably connected with the head 6 to enable the adjustable positioning of the hanger when desired. The lower end of the .arm 78 is offset, as at 82, and is formed integral with the housing 83, of the combined staple forming and driving mechanism.
The arm 7 8, at a point in proximity to the pocket 79, but below the same, has formed integral therewith a pair of oppositely extending reel supports 84, 85. The reel support 84 projects forwardly and the support 85 rearwardly. The support 84 is of greater length than the support 85.
Each of the combined staple forming and driving mechanisms includes a housing 83, and arranged therein is a reciprocatory staple former 86, provided with a cutter 87 Operating centrally through the former 86, is a reciprocatory hammer 88 which also opcrates through a guide 89 arranged at the lower end of the housing 83. -Positioned in the path of the hammer'88 is a sprin con trolled pivoted anvil 90, upon which the staple is formed and from which thestaple is forced by the hammer 88, forthe purpose of driving it to extend through a stave of the body portion of the barrel. In Figure 4 of the drawings, a stave is indicated at 91 and a staple at 92, the latter being shown engaged by the tool 53 of the clenching mechanism.
The normal p'ositionof the anvil is over the guide 89 and is shifted to such position by its controlling-'spring91. When the anvil 9 0 is in normal position it is arranged direct-1y below the lower end of the former 86*and inalignment with the pocket 92, formed in the lower end of the former 86. The guide 89 is so positioned with respect to the bottom of the housing 83 as to provide a clearance 93 for the knife or cutter 87.
In Figure 4 of the drawings, the-re is shown in dotted lines a length of staple forming wire extending across the lower portion of the housing, above the anvil 90 and the path of the knife or cutter 87 and former 86. The knife 87 projects slightly below the bottom of the former 86, so that the staple wire will be cut in ad- Vance of it being impacted upon by the former 86. As'the former 86 movesdownwardly carrying the knife or cutter 87 therewith, the wire will be first severed and on a further downward movement of the former 86 'it will straddle the anvil 90, bend- 'ing the severed length of wire in a yokeshziped manner, or in the form of a staple on the'anvil 90. The hammer 88 then moves downwardly, shifts the anvil outwardly, removes the staple from the anvil and drives it through thestav'e 91 against the tool 53, whereby the staple 92 will be clenched. The former 86 "is operated through the medium of an eccentric 9 4 and a connecting rod 95. The hammer 88 is operated by an eccentric 96 and a connecting rod 97. The eccentrics 94 and 96 are connected together but are so set up whereby the former 86 will be operated in advance of the hammer 88. The 'eccentric94 has an extended hub 98, which is 'adjustably mounted on the shaft 45.
Staple aaefeeding mechanisms-eTwo of these mechanisms are employed and each is associated with acombined staple forming and driving, mechanism and to the casing 83 of the latter is secured a forwardly directed yoke 99, carrying a pair 'of shafts 100, 101, which are secured to the yoke by bear ing "elements 102. The shaft 100 carries a grooved feed wheel 103, and the shaft 101 carries a grooved feed wheel 104 which opposes the wheel 103, and the said wheels have frictional engagement during their operation, with a staple wire 105 for drawing said wire from a reel 106, and feeding it through a guide tube 107 which opens into the housing, 83 below the former 86 and hammer 88. The shaft 101 is common to both feeding mechanisms and is of a length to extend to a point in proximity to the standards 1, 2, and each end terminal of the. shaft 101 is mounted in a bearing 107, carried on the lower end of a combined support and hanger 108, which is adjustably mounted on the headbar 6, as wellas extending above and below the same. The shaft 101 near each end is provided with a stop collar 109 and which abuts. against bearings 107, thereby preventing lengthwise shifting of the shaft 101 relativeto the bearings107'. The shaft 101 is intermittently operated through the medium of a "s ring controlled pawl 110, carried by the rod '43 and which anism, and each of said feeds consists of a reel 115 for the connecting wire 116. The
shaft of the reel 115 is indicatedat 117 and is mounted in the rear end of the support 85. The connecting wire 116 is engaged by a guide roller 118, carried by an arm 119, which projects rearwardly from the housing 83, and the wire 116 is extended under the housing 83, see Figure 4, so thatit can be secured by the staple 92 to a stave. The wire 116 is drawn off the reel during the revolving of the barrel body 23, r The wire 116 is initially positioned manually upon the barrel body 23 at a point below the housing 83, and it is drawn off the reel sufficient- 1y so that the free end terminal portion of the wire 116 will project to one side ofthe housing 83. See Figure 4. After the wire 7 116 has been connected to the barrel body 23, by a staple 92, the wire will be automatically drawn off the reel during the revolving of the barrel body, as is obvious.
The shaft 45, which isa common driving means for the clenching mechanisms, staple wire feeding mechanisms, combined staple forming and driving mechanisms, and barrel holding and revolving mechanism, is supported above the head bar 6, by the upwardly extending portions of the combined supports and hangers 108 and by a pair of supports 120, 121, which project above the head bar 6. The upper end of the combined. supports.andhangers 108, as well as the supports 120, 121, each is provided with a hearing 122 for the shaft 45, and each of the bearings 122 has a lubricating element 123 connected therewith. The shaft 45 carries a loose gear wheel 124, adapted to be shifted into engagement with adriving pinion 125, carried by a driving shaft 126, which is connected,as at 127, with an operating means therefor. The gear wheel 124 is connected to a clutch mechanism 128 carried by the shaft 45, and which iso-perated by a lever mechanism 129, carried by the support 121. I
The several hangers and supports carried the head bar are eachadjustably co'nee d t e ew h 1 1 ike'menner a d'in the l manner as described in connection with the arm 78, and it is thought unnecessaryto specifically describe the connection for each of the several hangers and supports.
In Figure 6 of the drawings, a collapsible barrel body is illustrated after the end connecting wires 130 and 131 have been secured therewith by the staples 132. The barrel body is shown as provided at each end with a hoop 133, but such hoop is removable. The barrel body, which is to have the end connecting wires 131, 132 connected therewith, is set up in the manner as referred to in my co-pending application, Serial Number 678,363, filed December 3, 1923. Such barrel body has the in ner connecting wires 13%, 135, connected therewith by the staples 136, but each of said connecting wires has free end terminals 137, and 138. The connecting wires 131, 132, aft-er being stapled to the barrel body 23, have free end terminals 139, 140. As the connecting wires 131, 132, 135 and 136 have the free end terminal portions, when the hoops 133 have been removed from the ends of the barrel body 23, it will collapse. When using the barrel for shipment, the end terminal portions of each connecting wire are twisted or otherwise secured together, whereby the barrel body is maintained in closed position.
The barrel body 23, as set up .in the manner referred to in the aforesaid application, has the inner face of each end terminal portion thereof bevelled and chamfered.
Although it is thought that the operation of the machine can be thoroughly understood from the foregoing description relative to each mechanism, it will be pointed out that the barrel body 23 with the wires 131, 132
omitted is placed upon the combined barrel body holding and revolving mechanism.
The body 23lis positioned upon the holder element 21 after which the holder element 25 is shifted to-the position shown in Figure 1, which securely clamps said body to such mechanism, and when the barrel body 23 is in such position, the clenching mechanisms are arranged therein and directly below the combined staple forming and driving mechanisms. The barrel body 23 is clamped to the barrel body holding and revolving mechanism by the locking mechanism on the shifting of the free end of the lever 71 towards the holding element 25. After the barrel body 23 has been clamped in the position as shown. in Figure 1, the connecting wire 116 is manually drawn off the reel 115 until the wire 116 is in the position shown in Figure 4. The mechanism is then thrown into operation and the several mechanisms are operated in proper sequence to provide for the stapling of a pairzo'f' connecting wires 116 to the outer face .of the barrel body 23. After the connecting vw'ires116 have been stapled to the barrel body, the wires 116 are cut manually in such manner that each of the. wires will have a pair of free end terminal portions, as indicated at 139, 140. The operation of the several mechanisms in. intermittent, as well as the revolving of the barrel body 23.
Preferably the movement is such, that each a of the wires 130, 131, will be secured to a stave by a plurality of staples 92, preferably twoin number, as shown in Figure 6. The cont-rolling of the operation of the machine is had through the medium of the clutch 128v and its actuating lever 129. I
As the various mechanisms are adjustably secured in position, provision is had whereby barrel bodies of any desired length can be supported in position by the barrel body holding and revolving mechanism to have secured-thereto at the proper point the wires 131. 132.

A machine for synchronously connecting end Wires to collapsible barrel bodies comprising a barrel body holding and revolving mechanism including a slidable and a stationary holding element engageable against the end edges of and extending into the ends of the barrel body for revolvably supporting barrel bodies of varying diameters, operating means for said mechanism, means positioned Within and above the barrel body supported by said mechanism for securing exteriorly to the barrel body connecting Wires therefor, operating means therefor, a lever mechanism for shifting and locking in position said slidable holding element, and a common driving means for said operating means.

A machine for synchronously connecting end Wires to collapsible barrel bodies comprising means for supporting and intermittently revolving a collapsible barrel body to have end connecting Wires secured thereto, said means including a pair of annular spaced opposed gripper members engageable against the end edge of and extending into the ends of the barrel body for extending and maintaining the latter in position during the intermittent revolving of said means, means positioned Within and over the intermittently revolved barrel body for securing end connecting Wires thereto, and operating means therefor.

A machine for synchronously connecting end Wires to collapsible barrel bodies comprising an adjustable combined barrel body holding and revolving mechanism and including a pair of spaced holder elements acting against the ends of the barrel body, a pair of staple clenching mechanisms interposed therein and positioned Within the body held by said mechanism and each including a vertically disposed reciprocatory tool spaced from and opposing a holder element, supporting means common to the said holding and clenching mechanisms, a pair of adjustably supported staple forming and driving mechanisms arranged above the barrel body supported by the holding mechanism and further arranged in superposed relation With respect to the said tools, operating means for the said several mechanisms, staple Wire feeding devices and connecting wire feedin devices arranged in operative relation witii respect to said driving mechanisms and upon the supports for said driving mechanisms, and the operating means for said holding mechanism further operating said staple Wire feeding mechanisms.
13, A machine for synchronously connecting end Wires to collapsible barrel bodies comprising an adjustable combined barrel body holding and revolving mechanism engageable against the end edges of and extending into the ends of the barrel body, a pair of staple clenching mechanisms interposed therein and positioned Within the body held by said mechanism and each in cluding a vertically disposed reciprocatory tool spaced from and opposing a holder element, supporting means common to the said holding and clenching mechanisms, a pair of adjustably supported staple forming and driving mechanisms arranged above the barrel body supported by the holding mechanism and further arranged in superposed relation with respect to the said tools, operating means for the said several mechanisms, staple Wire feeding devices and connecting Wire feeding devices arranged in operative relation With respect to said driving mechanisms and upon the supports for said driving mechanisms, the operating means for said holding mechanism further operatingsaid staple Wire feeding 1nechanisms, and a common driving means for said operating means.
14. A machine for synchronously connecting end Wires to collapsible barrel bodies comprising an adjustable combined barrel body holding and revolving mechanism and includinga pair of spaced holder elements acting against the ends of the barrel body, a
pair of sta ole clenching mechanisms interposed therem and positioned Within the body held by said mechanism and each including a vertically disposed reciprocatory tool spaced from and opposing a holder element, supporting means common to the said holding and clenching mechanisms, a pair of adjustably supported staple forming and driving mechanisms arranged above the barrel body supported by the holding mechanism and further arranged in superposed relat on with respect to the said tools, operating means for the said several mechanisms, staple Wire feeding devices and connecting Wire feeding devices arranged in operative relation with respect to said driving mechanisms and upon the supports for said driving mechanisms, the operating means for said holding mechanism further operating said staple Wire feeding mechanisms, and a locking mechanism cooperating with said barrel body holding and revolving mechanism to provide for the clamping and releasing of abarrel body thereon.

A machine for synchronously connecting end wires t collap ible ba rel bodies comprising an adjustable combined barrel body holding and revolving mechanism and including a pair of spaced holder elements acting against the ends of the barrel body, a pair of staple clenching mechanisms interposed therein and positioned Within the body held by said mechanism and each including a vertically disposed reciprocato-ry tool spaced from and opposing a holder element, supporting means common to the said holding and clenching mechanisms, a pair of adjnstably supported staple forming and driving mechanisms arranged above the barrel body supported by the holding mechanism and further arranged in superposed relation with respect to the said tools, operating means for the said several mechanisms, staple Wire feeding devices and connecting Wire feeding devices arranged in operative relation With respect to said driving mechanisms and upon the supports for said driving mechanisms, the operating means for said holding mechanism further operating said staple Wire feeding mechanisms, a common driving means for said ope-rating means, and a locking mechanism cooperating with said barrel body holding and revolving mechanism to provide for the clamping and releasing of a barrel body thereon.
16. A machine for synchronously connecting end Wires to collapsible barrel bodies comprising a combined barrel body holding and revolving mechanism including a pair of holding elements one of WlllCll is slidable,
a staple clenching mechanism positioned in proximity to the inner face of each of said elements and Within the barrel body when supported by said elements, each of said clenching mechanisms including a vertically disposed reciprocatory tool opposing and spaced from a holder element, means coacting with said slidable element for clamping a barrel body to said elements for the reception of end connecting Wires, means arranged above said combined barrel body holding and revolving mechanism and in superposed relation With respect to said tools for securing end connecting Wires to said barrel body, independent operating means for the said mechanisms and end Wire connecting means.

A machine for synchronously connecting end Wires to collapsible barrel bodies comprising a combined barrel body holding and revolving mechanism including a pair of holding elements one of which is slidable, a staple clenching mechanism positioned in proximity to the inner face of each of said elements and Within the barrel body when supported by said elements, each of said clenching mechanisms including a vertically disposed reciprocatory tool opposing and spaced from a holder element, means coacting with said slidable element for clamping a barrel body to said elements for the reception of end connecting Wires, means an ranged above said combined barrel body holding and revolving mechanism and in superposed relation with respect tosaid tools for securing end connecting wires to said barrel body, independent operating means for the said mechanisms and end wire connecting means, and a common driving element for the several independent operating means,

A machine for" synchronously connecting end wires to collapsible barrel bodies comprising a stationary and a slidable supporting member, a supporting element fixed to each of said members, a combined barrel body holding and revolving mechanism including a pair of holder elements revolvably mounted on said supporting elements, means to prevent lengthwise shifting of the lrolder elements on said supporting elements, a pair of staple clenching mechanisms each including a guide fixed to a supporting element, a reciprocatory tool travelling through said guide and a driving mechanism for the tool including a shaft mounted in a supporting element, said tools opposing the inner face of the holder elements, means" coa cting with said shiftable supporting member for clamping a barrel body to said holder elements for the reception of end connecting wires, and means arranged above said combined barrel body holding and revolving mechanism and in superposed relation to said tools for securing end connecting wires to said barrel body.

A'machine for synchronously connecting endi wires to collapsible barrel bodies comprising a stationary and a slidable supporting member, a supporting element fixed to each of said members, a combined barrel body holding and revolving mechanism including a pair of holder elements revolvably mounted on said supporting elements, means to prevent lengthwise shifting of theholder elements on said supporting elements, a pair of staple clenching mechanisms each including a guide fixed to a supporting element, a reciprocatory tool travelling through said guide and a driving mechanism for the tool including a shaft mounted in a supporting element, said tools opposing the inner face of the holder elements, means eoacting with said shiftable supporting member for clamping a barrel body to said holder elements for the reception of end connecting wires, means arranged above said combined barrel body holding and revolving mechanism and in superposed relation to said tools for securing end connecting wires to said barrel body, and independent operating means for the said mechanisms and end wire connecting means.

A machine for synchronously connecting end wires to collapsible barrel bodies comprising a stationary and a slidable supportmg member, a supporting element fixed to each of said members, a combined barrel body holding and revolving mechanism including a pair of holder elements revolvably mounted on said supporting elements, means to prevent lengthwise shifting of the holder elements on said supporting elements, a pair of staple clenching mechanisms each including a guide fixed to a supporting element, a reciprocatory tool travelling through said guide and a driving mechanism for the tool including a shaft mounted in a supporting element, said tools opposing the inner faceof the holder elements, means coacting with said shiftable supporting member for clamping a barrel body to said holder elements for the reception of end connecting wires, means arranged above said combined barrel body holding and revolving mechanism and in superposed relation to said tools for securing end connecting wires to said barrel body, independent operating means for the said mechanisms and end wire connecting means, and a common driving element for the several independent operating means.
21. A machine for synchronously connecting end wires to collapsible barrel bodies comprising an intermittently revolvable combined barrel body holding and revolving mechanism including a pair of oppositely disposed spaced removable gripper elements,
means to provide for the bodily shifting of one of said gripper elements relative to the other to provide for the supporting of barrel bodies of difi'erent lengths, a pair of staple clenching mechanisms, each of said mechanisms including a vertically disposed recip rocatory tool positioned in proximity to the inner face of each of said elements near the ends of and within the barrel, body when supported by said elements, a lever mechanism for locking said shiftable gripper element for clamping in connection with the other gripper element a barrel body to said holder mechanism for the reception of end connecting wires, spaced means arranged above said combined barrel body holding and'revolving mechanism and in superposed relation with respect to said tools for securing end connecting wires to said barrel body, and independent operating means for said mechanisms and end wire connecting means.

A machine for synchronously connecting end wires to collapsible barrel bodies comprising an intermittently revolvable combined barrel body holding and revolving mechanism including a pair of oppositely disposed spaced removable gripper elements, means to provide for the bodily shifting of one of said gripper elements relative to the other to provide for the supporting of barrel bodies of different lengths, a pair of staple clenching mechanisms, each of said mechanisms including a vertically dislbs posed reciprocatory tool positioned in proximity to the inner face of each of said elements near the ends of and Within the barrel body When supported by said elements, a lever mechanism for locking said shiftable gripper element for clamping in connection with the other gripper element a barrel body to said holder mechanism for the reception of end connecting Wires,
