To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Alonzo A. WARNER, a citizen of theUnited States, and a resident of New Britain, county of Hartford, and State'of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Quick-Detachable Connections for Vacuum-Cleaner Nozzles and the like, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to vacuum cleaners,
- and has particular reference to quick-detach able connections between the parts formingthe air passage of the cleaner, for instance,
"between the nozzle and the fan casing, or
between the dust bag and the casing. The aim of the invention is to provide connections of this sort having various features of v novelty and advantage, and which are particularly characterized by the ease and facilit with which the parts may be'detached e g secured together, and by the security an .tightness with which the parts when connected are held together, the joint therebetween being, to all intents and purposes, fluid-tight. f My. improved connection is extremely simple and economic in manufacture, efficient in operation, and presents a very neat and pleasing appearance.

lteferring to the drawings in detail, 10, .designatesthe body portion of the electric vacuum cleaner mounted on casters 11, the body portion, as is usual, constituting a casin in which are housed a -fan and'an electrlc motor for driving the same. 12 is a suction nozzle connected to a tubular extension 13 constituting the inletof the casing. The numeral 1 1 denotes the dust bag secured at its mouth to a sleeve 15 which is connected in telescopic relation to a tubular extension 16- constitutin the outlet of the fan chamber or casing. it is understood, of course, that the cleaner shown in the drawis illustrated by way of exemplification o y. a In accordance with. thepresent invention the suction nozzle 12 is provided with a tubular portion 20 adapted to telescope into the inlet extension'13', and ha constituting the end surface of the extension 13.' The external diameter of the portion innate .a. shoulder- 21 adapted to closely abut the shoulder 22 20 adjacent the shoulder 21, 'is preferably substantially the sameas-the internal diameter of the extension 13, but for the rest of its length itisof less diameter. In the present illustrative. disclosure the internal diameter of the inlet extension 13 is uniform while the portion 20 is slightly tapered down I towardsits inner end. The'tubular portion] of the nozzle is preferably rovided with n adapted to be slipped intoa notch or slot J in the extension 13, when the ,parts" are brought together. Pro'ecting from the wall of the tub ar portion 20 is a threaded member or stud 25 which; for instance, may be in the form ofa screw positioned in a radial opening at the inner end of a key 23. The numeral 26 denotes a securing member which is here shown as being in the form of a nut threaded onto the projecting end of. the screw 25, and preferably having its inner end tapered'or-conical, as
indicated at 27. Adjacent the inner end of the slot ornotch 24 and preferably at each side thereof is an,
inclined surface 30 facing towards the fan casing and against these surfaces the conicalend 27 of 'the nut engages, when screwed home, so that there is such a cam action therebetween that the tubular portion 20 is drawn into the inlet extension until the shoulders 21 and; 22 are in close abutting relation. In the present example, these surfaces are formed ,by counterboring the inner end of the slot. This counterbore'is slightly elongated, the surfaces 30 being struck about,
an axis slightly in advance of that from which the remaining. surface 31 of the counterbore is struck, so that the nut when engaging the surfaces 30' will be clear of the surface 31.

It is, of course, obvious thatthe invention is susceptible of various modifications and changes which are within the spirit of the invention without departing from the scope of I the following claims, it being understood that the present disclosure is by way of illustration only and it is not to' be taken as restrictive of my conception.
What ll claims is 1. In a device ofthecharacter described for use in connection with vacuum cleaners and the like, a pair of telescoping members having shoulders adapted for abutting relation, and securing means therefor adapted to rock one member with respect to the other and thereby draw said shoulders into close abutting relation.
2. In a device of'the character described for use in connection with vacuum cleaners and the hire, a pair of telescoping members having shoulders adapted for abutting relation, and securing means at one side of said members arranged to relatively move said members longitudinally and relatively rock them and thereby draw said shoulders into close abutting relation.
3. In a device of the character described for use in connection with vacuum cleaners (iii and the like, a pair of telescoping members having shoulders adapted for abutting relation, and a single securing means atone side of said members arranged to longitudinally move and simultaneously rock one of said members with respect to the other and thereby draw. said shouldersintoclose abutting relation.
l. In a device of the character described for use in connection with vacuum cleaners and the like, a palr of telescoping members having shoulders adapted for abutting rela having shoulders adapted for abutting relation, the inner member adjacent said shoulders closely fitting within the outer member, and the inner member being tapered down towards the inner end, and means at one side and the like, a pair of telescoping members of said members for urging said inner member into the outer one, and bringing said shoulders into close abutting relation.
6. In a device of the character described for useiin connection with vacuum cleaners and thelike, a pair of telescopingmembers' having shoulders adapted for abutting relation, and securing means arranged to exert a force longitudinally and a force radially of said members to draw said shoulders into close abutting relation.
7 In a device of the character described for use in connection with vacuum cleaners and the like, a pair of telescoping members having shoulders ad-apted for abutting relation, a cam surface provided on one of said members, and means carried by but movable relative to the other of said members and operable against said cam surface to urge one of the members into the other and relatively rock said members.
8. In adevice of the character described for use in connection with vacuum cleaners and .the like, a pair of telescoping members having shoulders, adapted for abutting relation, the external diameter of the inner member being less than the internal diameter of the outer one, and means between said members and arranged at one side thereof having abuttingshoulders, a cam surfaceon the side of one of said members, and a securing member supported for radial movement by the other of said members and acting againstsaid cam surface.
.10. In a device of the character described for use in connection with vacuum cleaners and'the like, a pair of tubular telescoping members having abutting shoulders, a cam surface On the side of the outer member and facing away from said shoulders, and a nut carried by the inner member and adapted for engagement with saidcam surface.
11. In a device of the character described, a pair of telescoping members having shoulders adapted for abuttingrelation, a stud on the inner member, the outer member having a longitudinal slot adapted to receive said stud and a cam surface facing away from the shoulders, and a nut carried by said stud adapted to engage against said cam surface.
12. In a device of thecharacter described, a pair of telescopin members having shoulders adapted for a utting relation, a stud 'aconical end adapted to bear against said cam surfaces.
13. In a device of the character described, a pair of telescoping members having shoul.
ders adapted for abutting relation, a stud projecting radially from the inner member,
the outer member having a longitudinal slot adapted to receive said stud, and cam surfaces at the sides of said slot, the inner member being slightly tapered, a nut havin a conical end adapted to bear against sai .cam surfaces, and a key on the inner member adapted to engage in said slot.
