Be it known that I, ROLLIN l-I. WHITE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland Heights, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Tractors, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. f
This invention relates to the class of tractors which have no main or motor supporting frame, except such as results from properly constructing and connectlng together various castings whose primary functions are to house the motor and transmission and support the radiator and liquid containing tanks.
` When a tractor has such a main fra-me it is necessary to devise new means for supporting various necessary adjunctive apparatus, which in the older and more common constructions were supported upon the same frame which also supported the motor and transmission 4mechanism housing.
The object of this invention is to provide a novel and eicient built up frame member of the character specified, of suitable form for the purpose, and to combine therewithin an effective and convenient manner such adjunctive appliances as the fuel tank,
radiator housing, radiator, air purifier, etc. The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts shown in the drawings, hereinafter described and pointed out definitely in the appended claims. 1

Fig. 5 is a front elevation of the framey ce The main frame includes in its construction a rear member 10 which is a hollow casting so constructed that the transmission mechanism may be mounted and enclosed therein. The rear end of this transmission case is formed with an opening, over which is bolted a. removable cover plate 11, by the removal of ,which access may be had to the enclosed mechanism. The main frame also includes the casting 12 which comprises the engine cylinders and the greater part of the crank case of an internal combustion motor; it also includes a front gear case 13 which) is a hollow member having a forwardly projecting shelf 14 at its lower end. The primary purpose of this front ear case is to support the radiator, the 'an shaft, the pump and the magnetoand to house the gears by which motion is transmitted from the crank shaft to said parts, and to the cam shaft. These three frame members 10, 12 and 13 are castings and are Hanged along htheir vertical meeting edges and are detachably connected together by bolts 15, which ass through the anges. This frame also includes a bottom member 16 which closes the openings in thebottom of the transmission case 10, ofthe crank case casting 12, vand ofthe gear case 13. This member 16 is preferably made of pressed metal with a ianged edge by means of which it may be removably secured by bolts 17 to the flanged lower edges of the three members 10, 12 and 13, which lower edges are preferably all in the same plane. This bottom member is not intended to support anyof the motor mechanism or transmission mechanism, it merely serves as an oil container and a closure for the otherwise open bottoms of the parts to which it is secured, preventing the access of dirt and dust thereto. When it is removed, access for inspection or repair may be had to the mechanism which is supported within the three hollow members 10, 12 and 13.
Upon the forwardly projecting shelf 14 of the gear case is an open housing 18 rigidly secured thereto by bolts. This housing is `an open channel frame'preferably made of riveted together pressed metal pieces having a rear reinforcing plate 182 The function of the housing is to house the radiator 19, and to provide a suitable front support for a built up cradle which is provided for 'the fuel tank 20 and the air purifier casing 21. A suitable cap18b havin a rearwardl extending top portion enc oses the ra. 'ator within the Vhousing and is secured to the housing by bolts 18C.
The cradle includes two side angle bars 22, which at their front ends rest upon and are fixed by bolts 22l to projecting angle bars 23 secured to the rear face of the plate 18a on the radiator housing. v A channel shaped standard 24 extends within the space between the upper portions of the transmission and engine castings, and the sides thereof which extend rearwardly of' the transmission casting are detachably secured to the side walls thereof by bolts 25. The upper end 26 of the 'standard 24 extends at right angles thereto and serves as a support for the rear ends of the side bars which are detachably secured thereto by bolts 27.
The fuel tank 20 is shaped with a flat bottom which rests upon and is supported by the fianges of the side bars 22 of the cradle. Angle bars 28 are secured to the projecting sides of the tank and the depending portions thereof are detachably secured l to the side bars by bolts 29.
The air purifier unit is supported upon the cradle behind the fuel tank; and includes an airt purifier casing 21 provided with plates 30, secured to opposite sides thereof and depending therefrom; the depending portion being spaced toft outside of the side bars 422 of the cradle and being detachably secured thereto bybolts 31.A
The rearwardly extending portion of the cap 18b extends over the fuel tank 20 and t-he airpurifier housing 21 is in alignment with the fuel tank. These members extend over the engine and form a canopy there` for when assembled.
It will be readily understood that changes in size, form and construction of various parts of my improved tractor may be made and substituted for those hereinshown and described without departing from the spirit of my invention, the scope of which is set forth in the ap ended claims.
Havin described my invention, I claim 1. A 'rame for tractors comprising a transmission case havlng an opening unit including the crank case having an open bottom, and a ont .gear -housing having an opening through its bottom, said three parte having their lower edges in the same orizontal plane, anda pan secured to the lower edges of said three` parts and closing the openings through their` bottoms. f
3. In a machine of the character specified, a main frame including an engine, a radiator housing fixed tosaid frame, a radiator within said housing, a rearwardly extending cap-secured over said housing, a standard secured to said frame, a cradle fixed to said standard and said housing, a fuel tank supported upon and fixed to said cradle, said cap extending over said tank and forming therewith a continuous canopy for the engine.

A frame for tractors comprising the following rigidly connected but separabley parts, viz,'a rear' transmission case having an opening through itsl bottom, an engine unit including the crank case having an open bottom, a front gear housing having an opening through its bottom, and having a forwardly extended shelf adjacent its bottom, a pan secured to the lower edges of said three parts closingwthe openings through their bottoms, a radiator housing fixed to the forwardly projecting shelf of the front gear case, a standard fixed to thel said frame behind'the engine, and a rigid cradle fixed to the radiator housing and to said standard and located in a plane above the engine,V
A frame for tractors comprising the following rigidly connected lbut separable parts, viz, a rear transmission case having an opening through its bottom,'an engine unit including the crank case having an open bottom, a front gear housing having an opening through its bottom, and having Aa forwardly extended shelf adjacentits bottom, a pan secured to the lower edges of said three parts closing the openings through their bottoms, a radiator housing fixed to the forwardly projecting shelf of the front gear case, a standard fixed to ,the said frame behind the engine, a rigid cradle fixed to the radiator housing and to said standard and located ina plane above the engine, and a fuel tank fitted and secured within said cradle 'over the engine. r
6. In a machine of the character specified, a main frame including an engine, a radiator housing fixed to said frame, an upright standard fixed to said frame, said standard l having its top portion bent over, and a rigid cradle fixed to and supported by the beniover portion of said standard and by said radiator housing. a
