vllLJlNlITED STATES 1,511,610 PATENT OFFICE.
XVILL K. HOLMES, OF TULSA. OKLAHOMA, ASSIGNOR TO THE TEXAS COMPANY. OF NEW YORK. N. Y., A CORPORATION OF TEXAS.
DOIVIE COVER FOR TANK CARS.
lApplication filed November 27, 1920. `Serial No. 426,720.
faalt who/n. t maj/ conce-m:
ABe it known that 1 firm K. HOLMES, a citizen ofthe United States. residing in Tulsa, countyof Tulsa, and State of @klahoina, have invented certain new and useful Improvement-s in Dome Covers for Tank -Garsgoff which the following is a specifica .tioni 'y vMy invention relates to mechanism for preventing loss of vapors in loading or fillting. tankcafrsqlwith ,volatile fluids, such as gasoline. and tomeansfor recovering the wapors evolved; l ..-In -l oading tank vcars with such liquids ,as-.gaso line, pa-rticularl-yfwith products conthe dome .opening duringthe loading operation. l A l. u other o. ject is toprovide for observing the .interiorfothetank so that the operator may. readily "be .informed when the tankis i lled.
A further object is to provide mechanism that issimple .and durable in construction and readily adaptable to various :types of tankicars. Q 'Furth'enobjeets as well as the particular advantages of the apparatus will appear from the following detailed description of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings which illustrate several preferred forms of the invention Fi re 1 is a diagrammatic elevation showing an apparatus constructed in accordance with my invention and constituting an embodiment thereof.
Figure 2 is a plan view of the dome cover.
Figure 3 is a section taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a section taken on the line 4 4 of Figure 2.
Figure 5 is a plan view of a modified form of the apparatus.
Figure 6 is an elevation of another modified form of the apparatus.
Referring to the drawings and particularly to Figure 1 it will be seen that a tank car 10. equipped withzthe usual dome l1` is provided with a dome cover or lid 12. The cover is provided with openings for the charging lin@ 13 and the gas line 14. The
In Figures v2,13 and 4 is showna dom(` 70 cover of such construction that a cover'of a given dialmcter may be used in making a closure over dome openings of various diameters. The cover 12a is provided'with holes 1311and 14 adapted for Iconnection with the "75 charging line and' gas line, respectively. The cover isequipped with' a'dependiug lfiange portion 16 adaptedV to project within the dome opening while the disc portion 'of the cover extends across thel Opening and rests 89 upon the'dome rim 17. It is thus apparent that a singledome cover may vWithin .reasonable limits be made-toaccommbdatetank cars having dome outlets of various 'diamt/IS.
-The cover 12a is provided with aplurality of clamp bolts 18 for clamping the lcover tightly over thedome opening. '11n-the arrangement shown each bolt is provided .with
a clamp bolt. guide 19 having a -tapered cut- 90 out portion and with a nut 20 formed at one end to engage the cut-out portion of the giiide 19 to form a gas tight seal. It is necessary that the lid be secured in a gas tight position and for this reason each clamp bolt guide may be provided with a gasket 21 and a gasket 22 is placed between the cover 12a and dome rim 17.
The lid is equipped with one or more transparent. members such as the glass peep hole 23 and the light conducting hole 24. In each instance the glass is preferably mounted upon a short connection or ange member 25 which is adapted 'to be screwed into the cover. The glass is held securely in position between a ring 26 and the flange 25 by means of screws. It is thus easy to replace the glass in case it is broken.
The dome cover 12b illustrated in Fi re 5 is designed for use on. certain types o ino sulated .tanlkzcalrs in Whioh,..a 'gas outlet; is sliovvn'atfllib and aninlet at 13;` The'fcover is arranged to be held tightly in position by- In Figure 6 is sho a dome' cover 12' equipped with the glass sights 23 and 24 and-1- Connected to the outlet 14. threads 30 for connection with the dome.
