Be it known that I. BENJAMIN GRIFFITH, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at Evanston, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in id heel-h lounting Devices, of which the following is specification.
My invention relates to wheel mounting devices of the type for use in connection with disk wheels, and it is the object of my invention to provine a new and improved arrangement of parts which shall act to guide and support such a wheel into proper position with respect to the hub already in position upon the axle.
It is one of the objects of my invention to improve devices of this type in sundry details, hereinafter pointed out. The preferred means by which I have accomplished my objects are illustrated in the drawings and are hereinafter specifically described. That which I believe to be new and desire. to cover by this application is set forth in the claims.

Referring now to Figs. 1 to 5 of the drawings in which corresponding parts are indicated by the same reference characters, it will be seen that my device is in the form of a ring 15 which is of a size to pass read 1?, 1923. Serial No. 663,287.
iiy into position upon the hub cap 16 of an automobile over the enlarged outer end thereof, an arm being connected with the ring in position to extend outwardly beyond the end of the hub as shown in Figs. i and 2-, being preferably in inclined position when so extended and being preferably pivotally connected with the ring 15.
In the construction shown, the arm comprises a bar 1'? which is pivotally connected by means of a bolt 18 between the upwardly directed end portions of the ring 15, which in the construction shown is in the form of a steel band bent into shape, as is best shown in Fig. 4. The arm comprises further two bars 19 which are connected with the bar 17 near the outer end of the bar and extend toward the ring 15 in diverging position so as to be in contact with the ring 15 at opposite sides thereof when the arm is in operative position, as is shown in Figs. 1 and 4. The bars 19 are connected together at an intermediate point by a cross brace 20 which is provided at its middle point with a loop 21 engaging the bar 17, the brace 20 serving to reinforce the diverging bars 19 and 19 with respect to each other. A fourth bar 22 is rigidly mounted upon the bar 17 in diverging position with respect thereto, being in position to engage the outer end of the hub cap 16 for supporting the arm comprising the bars 17 and 19 in the desired inclined position b yond the end of the hub comprising the cap 16.
For holding the ring 15 against withdrawal from the hub cap 16, I have provided a lug 23 in the form of a block secured upon the bar 17 adjacent to the pivot bolt 18. As is clearly shown in Fig. 2, when the arm comprising the bar 17 is in normal outwardly extended position, the block 23 stands in position opposite the inner face of the enlargement upon the end of hub cap 16, serving to prevent withdrawal oi the ring 15 from the hub cap. When it is desired to withdraw the device from the hub cap, it is only necessary that the arm be swung about the pivot bolt 18 into raised position, as indicated bydotted lines in Fig. 2, causing the lug 23 to clear the enlargement or head of the hub cap for permitting ready withdrawal of the ring 15.
Referring now to Figs. 6 to 9 inclusive,
in which the modified form of construction is illustrated, corresponding parts are indicated by the same reference characters In this construction, the hub comprises a cap 24 which is not provided with an enlarged outer end, wherefore it is necessary to provide some other expedient for preventing the withdrawal of the device from the hub. In the construction here shown, the clamping member engaging the hub. is also in the form of a split ring 25 which, in the construction shown, is formed of band steel with its end portionsturned outwardly into parallel po sition. In this construction, a bar 26 is sub stituted for the bar 17, the bar 26 being connected with the clamping member or ring 25 by means of a bolt 27 and brackets 28 and 29, which in the construction shown are riveted upon the end of the bar 26. As is shown in Fig. 7 the turned ends of the band "forming the ring 25 stand in spaced rela tion so as to be free to move toward each other for tightening the ring upon the hub cap 24. As is best shown in Fig. 9, the innerfaces of the brackets 28 and 29 are provided with cams 30 so arranged that when the bar 26 is turned into alignment with the ring 25, the ring is adapted to expand so as to be loose upon the hub cap 24-, the arrangement being such, however, that when the bar 26 is turned downwardly into operativeposition, as shown invFig. 6, the.
cams 30 operating upon the outer faces of the turned ends of the bandforming the ring 25 cause the band to tighten upon the hup cap 24 so as to prevent withdrawal of iths3 ring or clamping member 25 from the lVi'th my improved device comprising the clamping member and the arm, tightened upon a hub cap, as shown in either Fig. 1 or Fig. 6, a disk wheel 31 (only a portion or the disk of which is shown) is lifted into position upon the outer end or the arm and is slid toward the right in either of such figures toward the flange 32 of the hub upon which the diskis to be secured by means of bolts 33, or by any other suitable securing means. The position oi the arm is such with respect to the flange 32 that the wheel is normally supported in position thereon so as to slide readily into place upon the hub. the bars 19 being preferably in such position as to center the wheel horizontally while the bar 17 centers the wheel vertically with respect to the hub.
While I prefer toemploy one of the Forms of device as shown in my drawings, it will be understood that I do not wish to restrict myself to the use of such forms, except so far as such forms are specifically claimed,
inasmuch as it is evident that various changes might be made in the construction without departing from the spirit of my invention'.
I claim:
1. A. device for mounting a disk wheel upon its hub in position on an axle, comprising a clamping member adapted to be releasably supported by the hub, andan arm connected with the clamping member and supported in extended position for directing the wheel to its working position. 1
2. A. device for mounting a disk wheel upon its hub in position on an axle, comprising a clamping member adapted to be releasahly supported by the hub, and an arm connected with the clamping memberand supported in inclined position beyond the end of the hub with its inner end at a level for directing the-wheel to its working position.
3. A device for mounting a disk wheel upon its hub in position on an axle, comprising a clamping; member adapted to be releasably supported by the hub by engagement with thehub cap, and an arm connected with the clamping member and; en gaging the hub cap for directing the wheel to its working position.
4-. A device for mounting a disk wheel upon a hub in position on an axle, comprising a clamping member adapted to be releasably supported by the hub, and an arm pivotally connected with the clamping member and held by engagement with the hub cap in inclined position for directing the wheel to its working position. 5. A device for mounting a disk wheel upon its hub in position on an axle, compris ing aclamping member adapted to be releasably supported by the hub, and an arm connected with the clamping member and supported in extended position beyondjthe end of the hub for directing the wheel to its working position, said arm comprising means for guiding the wheel both horizon tally and vertically with respect to the position of the hub. y
6. A device for mounting a disk wheel upon its hub in position on an axle, comprising a clamping member adapted to'be mounted upon the hub, an arm connected with the clamping member for directing the wheel to its working position, and clamping means adapted upon the movement of the arm into operative position to hold the clamping member in position with respect to the hub.
7. A device for mounting a disk wheel upon its hub in position on an axle, com prising a clamping 'm'emberadap'ted to be mounted upon the hub, an arm pivotally connected with said clamping member so as to be capable of being swung into inclined position beyond the end of the hub, and clamping means adapted upon the movewheel to its working positionon the hub.

A device for mounting a disk wheel upon its hub in position on an axle, comprising a ring adapted to be mounted upon the hub, an arm connected with said ring, means serving when the arm is in operative position to prevent withdrawal of the ring from the hub, and means for supporting said arm in inclined position beyond the end of the hub for directing the wheel to its working position on the hub.
12. A device for mounting a disk wheel upon its hub in position on an axle, comprising a ring adapted to be mounted upon the hub, an arm pivotally connected with said ring. means rendered operative by the movement of the arm into normal inclined position for preventing withdrawal of the ring from the hub, and means for supporting said arm in operative position for directing the wheel to its working position on the hub.
13. A device for mounting a disk wheel upon its hub in position on an axle, comprising a ring adapted to be mounted upon the hub, an arm pivotally connected with said ring, a lug carried by the arm in po sition to engage the end of the hub cap for preventing withdrawal of the ring therefrom when the arm is moved into operative position, and means for supporting said arm in operative position for directing the wheel to its working position on the hub.

A device for mounting a disk wheel upon its hub in position on an axle, comprising a ring adapted to be mounted upon the hub, an arm comprising a plurality of diverging bars held in spaced relation sub stantially corresponding to the size of the opening in the disk, said arm being pivotally connected with said ring, means for releasably securing said ring on said hub, and means for supporting said arm in inclined position beyond the end of the hub for directing the wheel to its working position on the hub.
15. A device for mounting a disk wheel upon its hub in position on an axle, comprising a ring adapted to be mounted upon the hub,an arm comprising a plurality of diverging bars held in spaced relation substantially corresponding to the size of the opening in the disk, said arm being pivotally connected with said ring, means for releasably securing said ring on said hub, and means carried by the arm adapted by engagement with the end portion of the hub to support said arm in inclined position beyond the end of the hub for directing the wheel to its Working position on the hub.

A device for mounting a disk wheel upon its hub in position on an axle, comprising a ring adapted to be mounted upon the hub, an arm comprising a plurality of diverging bars held in spaced relation sub stantially corresponding to the size of the opening in the disk, said arm being pivotally connected with said ring, means for releasably securing said ring on said hub, and an additional bar carried by the arm between the said diverging bars adapted by engagement with the end portion of the hub to support said arm in inclined position beyond the end of the hub for directing the wheel to its working position on the hub.

A device for mounting a disk wheel upon its hub in position on an axle, comprising a ring adapted to be mounted upon the hub, a bar pivotally mounted on said ring, two additional bars mounted on said first named bar at a distance from the pivotal connection with the ring and diverging so as to engage the ring at opposite sides when the arm is swung to operative position, means for releasably securing said ring on said hub, and means for supporting said arm in extended position beyond the end of the hub for directing the wheel to its working position on the hub.

A device for mounting a disk Wheel upon its hub in position on an axle, comprising a ring adapted to be mounted loosely over the enlarged end of the hub cap, an arm pivotally connected with said ring, a block carried by the arm adjacent to the pivotal point for engaging the enlarged end of the hub cap when the arm is swung into operative position for preventing withdrawal of the ring from the cap, and means for supporting said arm in extended position beyond the outer end of the hub cap for supporting the Wheel and directing it to its Working position on thehub.

A device for mounting a disk Wheel upon its hub in position on an axle, comprising a ring adapted to be mounted upon the hub, an arm pivotally connected With said ring, cam means for tightening the ring upon the hub, and means for supporting the arm in extended position beyond the outer end of the hub for supporting the wheel and directing it to its Working position on the hub.
20. A device for mounting a disk wheel upon its hub in position on an aXle,-comprising a ring adapted to be mounted upon the hub, an arm pivotally connected With. said ring, cam means actuated by the movement of the arm into operative position for tightening the ring upon the hub, and means for supporting the arm in extended position beyond the outer 'end of the hub for supporting the wheel and directing it to its Working position on the hub.
21. A device for mounting a disk Wheel upon its hub in position on an axle, comprising a split ring adapted to be mounted upon the hub, means for tightening the ring upon the hub, and an arm connected with the ring and supported in extended position beyond the end of the hub for directing the Wheel to its working position on the hub.
22. A device for mounting a disk heel upon its hub in position on an axle, comprising a split ring adapted to be moiu ted upon the hub, an arm pivotally mounted on said ring, means actuated by the movement of the arm into operative position for tightening the ring upon the hub, and. means for supporting the arm in inclined position beyond the end of the hub for directing the Wheel to its Working position on the hub.
23. A device for mounting a disk Wheel upon its hub in position on an axle, comprising a split ring adapted tobe mounted upon the hub, an arm pivotally mounted on said ring, cam means actuated by the movement of the arm into operative position extended beyond the end of the hub for tightening the ring upon the hub, and means adapted by engagement with the hub for supporting the arm in operative position for supporting the Wheel and directing it to its Working position on the hub.
