UNITED STATES PATENT QEEIoE.
sUMNEE sKIEK, OE wAsIIINeTON, DIsTEIOT OE COLUMBIA.
vIIVPROVEMENT IN LAMPS.I
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 151,137, dated May 19, 1874; application tiled April 3, 1874.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, SITMNER S. KIRK, of Washington city, in ,the county of Washington and District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful improvements in fibrous or perforated receptacle for inolosing safety compounds and brilliants to be inserted into lamps burning coal-oil or other fluids; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specication:
Various compounds are used to mix with coal-oil or other burning-fluids in lamps, for the purposeof neutralizing the gases arising from the oil or other fluid, and thereby lessenin g or entirely removing all liability of explosion. .Heretofore these compounds have been siInply poured into the lamps, which is object-ionable, not only on account of the lamp presenting a dirty appearance, but also because it is apt to and often does clog the tube through which air lis admitted to the oil-reservoir, and from which the gas escapes, thus, instead of diminishing, actually increasing the liability of the lamp exploding.
The object of my invention is to obviate these difficulties; and to this end, the nature of my invention consists in inclosing such safety compound or material in a receptacle or covering of cloth or other suitable fibrous ma terial, made in the shape of a tsh, duck, or other fanciful article7 and insert-ing this into the lamp, and providing such receptacle with an air-tube or air-chamber, to cause it to iioat in the fluid within the lamp.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure l is a side view of a lamp with my invention embodied therein. Fig. 2 represents another form of my invention.
A represents a lamp for burning coal-Oil or other burning-fluid. B represents a receptacle or covering inclosing any of the safety compounds noW used.- This receptacle may be made of cloth or other suitable librous or perforated material, and is represented as being made in the form of a iish. If inade of yellow silk it would then represent the appear-ance of a gold-fish in an aquarium. But I do not conne myself to any size, color, shape or material. I provide the receptacle B 'with an air-tube or air-chamber, C, so as to cause the receptacle to iioat in the oil or uid within the lamp, to distribute the effects of the compound, and to improve the appearance of the receptacle. v
By these means the objections to using such safety compounds are entirely removed, and the lamp will be made to present a unique and handsome appearance.
Having thus fully described my invention, what'I claim as new, and desire to secureby Letters Patent, ism
The fibrous or perforated receptacle inclosing safety compounds for lamps, in combina tion with an air tube or chamber, placed Within or attached to the receptacle, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I hereby aiiiXV my signature in presence of two witnesses.
SUMNER S. KIRK.
