UNITED STATES HUDSON LESLIE, OF EUREKA, CALIFORNIA.
OIL-WELL .GAP.
Application filed March 16, 1923. Serial No. 825,261.
To all wiwm it may concern:
Be it known that HUnsoN Lnsmn, a citizen of the United States, residi at Eureka, in the county of Humboldt and tate of California, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oil-Well Caps, of which the following is a s ecification.
This invention 1e ates to an oil well cap and has for its principal object to provide in a relatively simple and efficient means for capping and controlling the discharge from high pressure oil and gas wells, the construction of the capping means being such as to facilitate the ready and easy application thereof to the oil well tublng either prior or during the discharge of the oil or gas from the well.
Another object of the invention is to provide an oil well cap of the above mentioned as character, which is of such a construction as to enable the. same to be placed into operative sition with relation to the Well tub ing rom a point remote from the well and thereby avoiding all danger of contact by the operator with'the oil or gas being discharged from the well.
A still further object of the invention is to provide an oil well cap of the above mentionel character, which is provided with ac suitable cutoif means to enable the oil or gas being discharged from the well tubing to be cut oif and furthermore enabli suitable connections to be connected to t e cap for the purpose of allowing the flowing 011 as to be discharged to any suitable reservoir or the like.
Another important ob'ect of the invention is to provide an oil wel cap of the-above mentioned character, which is simple in construction, inexpensive, strong, durable and well adapted for the purpose for which it is designated.
Other objects and advantages of this invention will become apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals designate like parts throughout the same r Fi re 1 is a side view of the oil well ca evice applied in operative position to a we tubing.
Figure 2 is a similar vie-w showing the vided with an upstanding lu In the drawings wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 1 designates a well casing which may be taken as indicative of that portion of the well projecting above the surface of the ground or at least the accessible end of the casing and as is customary, the outer end of this casing is provided with the usual collar 2 exterior to the casing.
The flanged collar 2 may be provided with internal threads for the purpose of permitting the same to be securely held upon the threaded ends of the oil well tubing 1 and I do not wish to confine myself to the manner in which the same is held in position thereon. The flanged collar 2 is pro 3 adjacent the eripheral edge thereof an the purpose of t 18 lug will hereinafter be more fully described. The flanged collar 2 is provided directly opposite the lug 3 with an opening 4 and the purpose of this opening is to provide a means whereby the cap may be locked .in position on the flanged collar 2 by suitable bolts passing through the openings in the flange 2 and in the flange of the bottom of the cap. It is to be understood that as many openings such as are shown at 4 in the drawings are provided in the flanged collar 2 as may be desired.
The oil well cap consists of the body members 5 and 6 which are of like construction and are provided with flanged portions 7 and 8 respectively for the purpose of permitting the same to be securely held together and suitable bolts 9 adapted to pass through the respective flanges 7 and 8 of the body members 5 and 6 for the purpose of holding the same in alinement and in proper position. The body members 5 and 6 are provided with centrally registering passages 10 and 11 respectively which when in registerin relation taper from the lower portion of the body portion 5 to the upper body portion 6 as more clearly shown in the dotted lines in Fig. 1 of the drawings. Disposed between the flanged portions 7 and 8 of the body members 5 and 6 is a rotary valve 12 which is provided with a square headed portion 13 which extends beyond the flanged portions 7 and 8 for the purpose of permitting the operation.
of the valve so as to provide a cutoff or stopping means in the passages 10 and 11 formed in the body members 5 and'6 respectively.
The upper end of the body member 6 is provided with a suitable neck portion 14- and adapted to be received in this neck portion 14 is the extension pipe 15 which may be of any suitable length and which is furthermore adapted to be connected to a suitable reservoir or storage tank (not shown).
The lower end of the body member 5 is provided with a flanged member 16 and this flanged member 16 is adapted to cooperate with the flanged collar 2 carried by the oil well tubing 1 and the flanged member 16 is provided with a pair of depending spaced lugs 17.
The spaced lugs 17 carried by the flanged member 16 are adapted to receive the upstanding lugs 3 carried by the flanged collar elements 20 are adapted to be received in these registering apertures 4 and 20 for the purpose of locking the body members 5 and 6 in position upon the oil well tubing 1 when it is desired. A
- In the application of the oil well cap to the well tubing 1 the parts being substantially in position as indicated in Fi 2 of the drawings the body members 5 and 6 are out of engagement with the oil well casing 1 and are held in this position by any suitable supporting means ,or stop elements as shown at 21 in the drawings. When it is desired to place the oil well cap in position upon the well tubing 1 for the pur ose of permitting the oil being discharge from the well tubing to be conveyed to a suitable storing receptacle, the body members 5 and 6 may be swung into position upon the well tubing from a suitable point remote from the oil well tubing by the em loyment of cables or the like and when the anged member 16 has swung upon the pin 18 carried by the lugs 3 and 17 of the flanged collar 2 and flange member 16 respectively the flanged member 16 will rest upon the flanged collar 2 and may be secured. thereon by the lockspherica gether, said sections provided at diametriing bolts 20. In this manner a continuous passage is provided between the well tubing 1 and the outlet or discharge pipe 15 and the oil or gas being discharged from the well tubing may be allowed to flow through the passages 10 and 11 by rotating the valve 12 and the valve members 5 and 6 so as to open When it is desired to cut off the sup ly of oil or gas from the well casing the va vs 12 is rotated in such a manner as to revent further passage of the oil through t e passage 11.
With a device of the above mentioned character it can be'seen that there is no possibility of the operators of the well coming in contact with the oil gushers and furthermore endangering their lives by trying to apply suitable means for controllin the supply of oil coming out of the oil we tubing. Furthermore by employin a device of the character above describe the simplicity of the same renders it very easily placed in an operative position and furthermore does not require any considerable length of time to apply the device in position and will also cause less oil to be lost in trying to convey the same into suitable storage receptacles. The oil well capping means is still further of such a construction as to enable the same to be very quickly adjusted and installed and furthermore does not necessitate the employment of a number of parts in order that the same may be installed upon a well tubing and the well tubing itself is not aflected by the placing of a flanged collar thereon.
' From the foregoing description of the con struction of my improved apparatus, it will be seen that I have provided a simple, inexpensive-and efiicient means for carrying out the objects of the invention, and wlule I have particularly described the elements best adapted to perform the functions set forth, it is obvious that various changes in form, proportion and in the minor details of construction may be resorted to, without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the principles of the invention.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1.. The combination with an oil well casing and a seat member carried thereon; of a cap com rising a pair of substantially hemisections removably secured tocally opposite points therein with openings, 'means .for detachably securing the lower section of said cap to the aforementioned seat member, and a rotary valve supported in said sections and adapted to cooperate with the openings therein. I
2. The combination with an oil well casing and a seat member carried thereon; of valve member seated within said sections a cap comprising a pair of substan 1 y and having a transverse bore adapted to be 10 hemispherical sections removably red brought into registry with said openings to ther, said sections provided at diametriin said sections, and an outlet pipe extendy opposite points therein with openings, ing from the opening provided in the upper means for 'detachably securing the lower section of said cap. section of said cap to the aforementioned In testimony whereof I afiix my signature. seat member, a substantially ball-shaped.
