E. H. MANDLERv PARING ATTACHMENT FOR KNIVES Filed Feb. 23. 1923 @Homey 5 My improved gage attachment Patented Oct. 7, 1.924,
ERWIN I-I. MANDIIER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
PARING ATTACHMENT FOR KNIVES.
Application-fled,February 23, 1923.V Serial T 0 all wiz-0m rlt may concer/1t.'
Beit known that I, ERwIN H. MANDLnR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pairing Attachments for Knives, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in paring attachments forfknives, and has for its primary object the provision of a novel and'V improved gage or guide attachment which is capable of application to paring knives of various sized blades and which will be securely held in a predetermined position.
Another important object of the invention is to provide a paring gage whereby the rind or skin of fruits and vegetables may be economically and expeditiously removed without cutting in any deeper than is absolutely necessary to remove the rind, thus saving a large percentage of the fruit or vegetable which would otherwise be pared 0E with the rind and thereby lost.
A still further object of the invention is to furnish a device of the character set forth which is very simple in construction and which may be cheaply manufactured.
Vith the above and other ob] ects in view as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention comprises certain novel features of construction and arrangement of the various parts as will be hereinafter described and claimed, and in order that the same may be better lunderstood, refere-nce is had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification.
In the drawing,
Figure 1 is a side elevation sho-wing the application of my invention to a paring knife;
Fig. 2 is a similar view of the other side of the knife;
Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 4L is a perspective view of the gage removed.
Referring specifically to the drawing wherein like reference characters designate like parts throughout the several views, numeral 5 denotes the blade of a paring knife of the usual type having a cutting edge 6. is denoted generally by the numeral 7, being preferably stamped from sheet metal, the stock of which is formed adjacent either end with transverse rearwardly offset straps 8 between which and the body of the attachment the knife blade passes, as best shown in Fig. E21.y
Upon an inspection of Fig. 3 it will be noted that the paring gage is provided with av longitudinal recess which terminates at the inner edges of the straps 8, and also that the stock 10 ofthe gage running longitudinally adjacent the cutting edge 6 is spaced from the blade 5. to permit passage of the parings therebetween and out through the longitudinal recess. The upper portion of the recess is provided with a resilient keeper flap 9 having a plurality of transversely arranged rearward protuberances 11 which are adapted to engage with the upper edge of the knife blade and maintain the cutting edge in a predetermined position, thus preventing a relatively narrow blade from slipping upwardly in the gage. However, should it be desired to take a very thin paring, the keeper flap 9 may be lifted up with the finger to permit the blade 5 to slide a short distance upwardly toward the topi of the gage, the taking of a thin paring being thus made possible as will hereinafter appear. It will be obvious that blades of varying sizes may be used, in view of the holding action of the keeper flap 9.
The ltop and bottom longitudinal edges of the gage 7 are formed with outward lips 13 and 12 respectively, the bottom lip 12 serving as a bearing surface against the fruit or vegetable being pared, while the top presents a smooth surface for` the forenger of the parer preventing the upper edge of the knife blade from digging thereinto, and adapting the device to double edged knives. Referring again to Fig. 3 and assuming, as in practice is the case, that the rounded portion of the lower lip 12 is the bearing portion which .engages the fruit, it will be im mediately evident that the. withdrawing of the cutting edge 6 therefrom will decrease the angle of the cut, thus diminishing the thickness of the paring removed.
While I have described and illustrated the preferred embodiment of my invention in accordance with the patent statutes, yet it will be understood that I do not propose to limit myself strictly thereto, since various changes and modifications will immediately suggest themselves to ythose skilled in the art Without departing from the spirit of my invention as defined by the following claims:
I claim:
l. A paring attachment for knives comprising a metal body having a longitudinal opening intermediate its ends one longitudinal Wall of said opening being offset from the plane of the other, integral keeper straps formed in said body portion and beneath which a knife blade is insertib-le, the cutting edge of said blade being adjacent said offset Wall and spaced therefrom, the longitudinal edge of said attachment adjacent said cutting edge of said knife blade being formed with an out-turned guide lip, an integral flap extending into said opening from one longitudinal edgethereof, and said flap having a series of protuberances upon one face thereof selectively engageable With the lock edge of a knife blade for limiting movement thereof transversely of said opening.
2. A paring attachment for knives comprising a metal body having a longitudinal opening intermediate its ends one longitu inal Wall of said opening being oset from the plane of the other, integral keeper straps formed in said body portion and beneath which a knife blade is insertible, the outtinov edge of said 4blade Abeing adjacent said o set Wall andspaoed therefrom, the longitudinal edge of said attachment adjacent the cutting edge of saidy knife blade being fo-rmed With'an out-turned guide lip, and resilient means carried by the upper longitudinal portion of said attachment engageable with the upper edge of said blade. Y
In testimony whereof I aliX my signature.- l. f
