IMPROVEMENT IN FARMGATES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. liy dated May 19, 1874; application tiled March 28, 1874.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN A. CORDRAY, of Sharon, in the county of Noble and State of Ohio, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Farm-Gates; and I do hereby decla-re that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the anneXed drawings making a part of this specilication, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.

Figure l of the drawing is a representation of a side view of my farm-gate, and Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is an end view.

This invention has relation to farm-gates which are easily adjustable for different purposes; and it consists in the combination, with a sliding gate, of a slotted vertical hinge-bar and gate-posts slotted to receive the ends ot the horizontal bars of the gate, as hereinafter more fully described.

In the accompanying drawings, the letter A indicates the front gate-post, and the letter B the rear post, to which the gate is connected. The front post A is usually made wider than the rear post, and is provided with a series of vertical slots, c, on each side, to receive the front ends of the horizontal gate-bars. The rear post has also a series of vertical slots, a, on one side only, to receive the sliding eXtensions b of the gate when the latter is used as a set of bars simply. C represents the vertical bar, which is hinged or pivoted at one side of the gate-post B, and is provided with a series of slots, a', to receive the ends of the extensions b, above mentioned, when the gate is to be operated by rotation.

It will be observed that the side'c of the gate-post B is in line with the inner walls of the slots a', and that a guide is thus provided in a very simple manner, whereby the gate may be kept in line with the slots of the opposite gate-post.

D represents the gate, which is designed to operate both by sliding and by rotation. It consists of the horizontal bars b and the vertical connecting-bars d and d', respectively placed at the front end and middle of the gate. A brace-bar, e, extends diagonally across the gate, between these upright bars, strengthening it materially. Under the front upright d is usually arranged a small roller or caster, n. From the middle upright d the bars ll extend to the rear, terminating in free ends, as at b. The front ends of the bars project a little bcyond the front bar d, as shown at b.

The facility with which this gate may be adjusted o'ers many advantages to the stoel.'` farmer which will be readily appreciated. When the open end is placed in the turningpost C and shoved back to the center bar d it will admit of the passage of persons and stock. -For the passage of teams, after being shoved back to the center post it should be rotated one-quarter, when it will stand fully open with but little strain on either hinges or caster. Vhen it is to be used as bars, the ends of the gate are inserted in the series of slots a on the opposite sides of the gate-posts.- Or, if it be necessary to use the entire space between the gate-posts, the gate may be removed by withdrawing the free extensions b from their slots and setting it on one side for the time being.

The hook lt' is provided near the upper end of the turning-post C, and, when the gate is pushed back, may be connected with a pin or staple, z, on the middle upright d', relieving the roller under the front upright l from its bearing.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The combination, with the removable slidegate I), of the front gate-post A, having a double series of4 slots, a, and the slotted turning-post C, attached to the rear slotted post B, substantially as and for the purpose specied.
